Hi guy's. I killed my GQ at the beginning of the year & picked up a 1 owner 100% original low 55186 klm series 1 GU Td42T. Anyhow I am not keen on do-dads especially the airbag in the steering wheel. lucky it doesn't have the safety pack so no ABS or Pass airbag. Anyhow Has anyone ever successfully replaced the wheel with a early DX wheel or ute steering wheel as they have no airbag? I have searched & can't seem to find anything but one brief topic ( which i can't find now) where a few years back someone was asking for the same info on another forum. All I got from that was it has been done & Nismo I think it was supply a part to trick the system in thinking the airbag is still there? A search for this item using Nismo brought up nothing.
Now Not being rude but I don't need to hear about how it will be unroadworthy how the airbag is a safety feature (which i disagree with) & so on. please just any info from those that know 100% if & how it can be done thanks Jono.

When I was involved with Holdens and customers wanted their factory seats replaced (that had seat belt pre-tensioner fitted) with aftermarket seats, a dummy load was fitted into the connector for the seat belt pre-tensioners.
This would stop the SRS warning from illuminating once the vehicle was started and the theory was that the airbags will still deploy if needed. I guessing this might be similar to what Nismo are selling??
Seeing as your vehicle only has the one airbag I don't see this as being necessary. Why not disconnect the SRS control module and leave the airbag in place?
The airbag can't deploy if the control unit is disconnected.
You might need to earth a wire to turn the SRS light off.

we're all getting free airbags anyway, the std wheel isnt that bad. to look at.
Could do what Mudski did and have it leather bound, looks the goods.

Sorry Tuppa don't agree.
He is asking assistance with something that is dangerous and illegal.

I more or less asked politely for the do-gooders & the trolls not to post. Bob I doubt very much that many of the Patrol owners on this site have vehicles that are legal & probably including your self?. As far as dangerous go's rubbish! how would my GU Patrol be any more dangerous than the exact same vehicle but in a DX with no airbag? It wouldn't! I'm not into the pissing contest thing or the argument crap. so please if you can't contribute on my post in positive manner to answer my questions, THEN DON'T POST AT ALL!

Threedogs,I don't mind the looks of the wheel. I'm just not keen on the airbag biso. Also we all ain't getting free airbags, my model is not in the recall according to Nissan Aust & they also told me it was the passenger airbag only that the Patrols were getting recalled for.

It is his choice Bob, I am sure that he knows this and has weighed up the risks............there is really no need for some of the comments that were posted mate
We are not here to criticise someones decision, advise yes but criticise no

Yendor,
I would need the airbag light to come on for the few seconds then go out as per check when you 1st start the vehicle so it would pass pink slip. What i ca remember reading about Nismo they sold a device that would make that happen. I was thinking of using the DX or ute wheel as I'm pretty sure no one would notice it wasn't a airbag wheel unless they were really looking for it. Thanks for your reply.

My airbag rattles in my wheel which is annoying. I have had it apart & as far as I can tell is the metal bracket that the airbag bolts to needs stronger springs. It is the springs that provide the resistance for the horn. Hope that makes sense? One of my mates suggested that I stretch the springs to give them more resistance. Anyone else had this problem & fixed it? If I can't change the wheel to a non airbag wheel I at least need to fix this issue.

No worries mate I was just trying to find a cheap and easy way for you to do it.
The Nismo device would only be a resistor. What that value of that resistor is I don't know. As part of the SRS check the control unit measures the resistance across the airbag and if that resistance goes out of spec it detects a fault and turns on the warning light.
A quick search did bring up this clip. It's not a Patrol but it might help you.
