GU converting auto hubs to manual
Will the manual hubs from my old GQ fit as a replacement to the auto hubs on a series 2 GU?

Thanks in advance

if you run into trouble read this

if you dont swap them then the gu ones can be converted in this thread by ynot

Just bang out the auto locking plate on the GU auto ones. Then they are strong, manual hubs. Takes about five minutes a side, including removal of the hub from the car. Flat screw driver and lever out the first plate you see on the inside section of the hub.

This is a job I just haven't gotten around to yet. I want it mainly for reversing trailers.

is there a good reason why to swap to a manual hub instead of leaving the auto ones in, I know a mate who did years ago on a Hilux.

Sometimes the auto hubs when left in the auto position can unlock themselves when changing direction and then grab when you gun it again. This can shock the hub etc. I wouldn't say it's a common thing but it can happen.

Yeah when I first got my Patrol on the odd occasion I would back out of the driveway, start to move forward and click click click. Gave me the shoits so out came the screw driver and levered those plates out. Done both sides in less than a stubbie.

You don't need to jack it up or pull the tyre off do you?? Just undo the 6 or 8 cap bolts and pull the hub off??

Yep. Just buy a cheap socket to fit the hex that locks the hub and weld a 3inch or so piece of flat bar to it on its side and you have a small tool to lock the hubs which you can keep in the door pocket.

Or just go to bunnings and get a plumbers pipe socket that fits. already has the bar with it.

Or you could do that!

Or cut the end off an old tyre wrench leaving a bit of bar... Bang done.. No welder or purchase required.
