man taken by croc near adelaide river jumping crocs

just read on the news that a 57 yr old darwin man was taken near the jumping crocs when he went to retrieve his lure, i cannot believe that there are so many people who still take huge risks by doing shit like that for a $10 lure or just standing in the water or cleaning fish at the boat ramp, its just stupidity to take risks like that especially with the growing number of crocs. My sympathy to the family but hell it just takes one silly decision.

I ran out of fuel in my tinny once way upstream of the jumping croc spot and had to oar it back to the boat ramp. Took me a couple of hours and I went through that area after dark with a pucker factor of ten. Not pleasant, but was a learning experience for sure.

Agree with you though. Risk taking like that for a lure is madness.

What Peeeees me of the most is they have now hunted and shot the suspected croc, all it was doing was what comes naturally to it.

That spot on the Adelaide River is probably more dangerous than most other areas as the crocs are so used to humans interacting and feeding them and being able to approach boats. The Mary River (Shady Camp) isn't much better as some so called 'Pro's' or charters, will fillet their fish and then whack the carcasses on the sides of the boat to attract a croc to feed the carcass to. Another incident waiting to happen right there.

What many might not realise, is that the East Coast of Far North Qld also has some of the biggest crocs in concentrated numbers. NPWS in their wisdom had a program for many years to relocate problem crocs from near major towns. Unfortunately their budget didn't extend all that far so they mostly released these monsters along the coast line between North of Princess Charlotte Bay, through to Lockhart River. If you ever have the opportunity to do a heli flight along that stretch of the coast you will see a 5+ meter croc in just about every single creek. You can also clearly see where they lay in ambush near the mouths of these shallow sandy creeks and how careful you have to be if you ever fish that area.

Mego - I'm with you on this one. I think that we are probably at the point where a culling program should again be seriously examined.

yep..sure do....they live with them , they know the issues with them , they are in their territory , the signage is all there for visitors also , they would be advised , Adelaide river and shady creek as mentioned are the worst...what do the idiots want ..a kidney ?...all for a f85ing 20.00 lure .....yep ...sure do !

It's probably not so much the price of the lure but the fact it caught fish! Nevertheless, I would'nt subscribe to the belief 'it wouldn't happen to me'!

A friend and I walked the Jardine years ago waist high water,
swear black and blue I was being watched, funny bit was the driver had to walk back across to get the 4x4.
Plenty of signs all over the top end in different languages telling of the danger.
as for my crossing I was young bulletproof and an idiot, never again a guy was taken at the ferry a few years later
