Ok, picked up the wagon from Bailey Diesel Group at Unanderra this afternoon. Big shout out and thanks to Matt and his guys for fitting me in and getting it going. Matt showed me through their common rail injector shop and seriously it looked like a Formula 1 factory, seriously clean and well laid out, these guys know what they're doing. I digress.
After a few calls back and forth to UFI the wagon got started. We ran into a bit of trouble with the cruise control throttle cable and presently this was unable to be attached to the UFI pump and will require some further thought and clever brackets.
I get down to BDG this after noon and the wagon is sitting on the dyno, but unfortunately we were unable to get any meaningful results as the clutch in my wagon is just not up to it, not even close. They did 1 initial run and it managed 192 rwhp at 2,500 rpm at 20 psi before the clutch let go. AFR's were a constant 19, didn't see any torque numbers. So it looks as though it's down on hp, but it's also 6 psi down and this was never adjusted, there was no point. So I need to get the new clutch in, up the boost and see where it ends up, but I suspect it will be low, hope I'm wrong.
How does it drive? It drives great! Makes effortless power, little puff of black then runs clean as a whistle. For those locals that know Mt Ousley I was able to comfortably run up there in 5th at 80km/hr, slow down to closer to 70 ish then just cruise back up to 80 odd still in 5th with the slightest movement of the pedal, gave it a little squeeze more and it was heading for 90 and then slipped the clutch. I then drove the rest of the hills in 4th on a light throttle to give the clutch an easier time. 100 odd km/hr on the freeway saw 6-8 psi and 250 deg EGT's. Biggest EGT's I saw mucking around in 5th up the mountain was 450.
Boost comes in with bugger all throttle so you get a nice smooth delivery. Up one of the little hills around home I give it a little run in 2nd, not much, changed to 3rd and lent on it a bit (not full throttle) it build boost and then started wheel spinning in a straight line (it was raining) that make me giggle a little. Close to a 3T wagon running near new 33" BFG A/T's on standard 3.9 gearing. This thing definitely has potential. Also noticed gear box roll over noise has dramatically reduced, go figure. It also has heaps more torque at idle, I can easily just let the clutch out in first without touching the throttle and it just walks away. Looking forward to getting it tuned up and going.

Peak power is normally at or beyond 3200rpm. So you still had quite a bit to go. 190 at 2500 would see you getting close the a 250hp peak.

Update from the weekend. Bit of a relief to have it running again, so decided to tackle a few other jobs that need sorting out. Started out by installing a couple of 8 B&S power supplies to the 12 pin plug for the caravan fridge and the Anderson plug for charging van batteries. These were run through relays and triggered by an ignition source so they are only active when the ignition is on.
Then I installed my Redarc Tow Pro trailer brake controller. I put it in the blank on the right hand side on the gauge light dimmer. Came up pretty good I think.

Also installed the Brakesafe battery monitor, apparently you need on of these... Dearest bloody volt meter I've ever bought....
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/FD0571DD-4E76-43A0-9B18-55EF13450E1E_zpsqau3zwz3.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/FD0571DD-4E76-43A0-9B18-55EF13450E1E_zpsqau3zwz3.jpg.html)
So then on the Sunday I set about righting a pretty embarrassing wrong from the other week. Started off by removing the bonnet and placing it to the side, out of bloody sight!!
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/E05DC478-8540-4CBD-A399-0415815B038F_zpsea6ixuac.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/E05DC478-8540-4CBD-A399-0415815B038F_zpsea6ixuac.jpg.html)
Placed the "other" bonnet on and marked out the position of the intercoooler. Removed it and placed it on a couple of stands.
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/C1164A71-FBCA-41C0-A510-E2EED5CF5686_zpstnpplxv2.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/C1164A71-FBCA-41C0-A510-E2EED5CF5686_zpstnpplxv2.jpg.html)
Then set about cutting a new hole straight through the middle of it, this time in a more appropriate location and size.
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/23BADBEB-9AC7-4BF9-8B7E-0E9E3C252B4C_zpsodhn57jw.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/23BADBEB-9AC7-4BF9-8B7E-0E9E3C252B4C_zpsodhn57jw.jpg.html)
Turned it over and removed some of the bracing next to the hole to allow the cooler to seal up neatly on the bonnet.
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/22356C53-C36D-48AF-9985-E0E6C1DC2F6D_zpsl8jlravv.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/22356C53-C36D-48AF-9985-E0E6C1DC2F6D_zpsl8jlravv.jpg.html)
Put the template on the bonnet and set the back of the scoop 12mm from the back of the bonnet after receiving advice from Bob at Fairline, he's a super bloke. This means that only a couple of the bolt holes land in awkward locations. Drilled out all the holes, opened up those in the bracing with a step drill and then painted all the fresh edges. I'll sit the bonnet back on during the week or next weekend, haven't decided yet. It kinda looks pretty cool with a black bonnet, I'll get some pics after.

Needed to use the wagon tomorrow so I threw the bonnet and scoop back on tonight. I put one of those foot stools on the radiator support panel being careful not to squash anything to important, this allowed me with the help of an apprentice (aka my wife) to lift the bonnet into position. I could then release my apprentice thus keeping in favour with my apprentice and complete the bonnet install by myself. I used a piece of pool pipe to support the bonnet until I could get the struts back on.

Still not convinced on the black bonnet, but I'll see how I go with it over the next couple of weeks, it might grow on me.
While I was going I installed a set of LED front Parker globes I picked up a while ago and while I was under there I spotted an oil leak which was traced back to the front steering dampener. Seems the weld around the end of the dampener has split. Possibly due to the body of the shock hitting the bars and the eye getting yanked around a bit further, either way it's buggered and depositing oil on the front bars and diff. Time for a new one.
Am I better off keeping the eye to eye set up or going to a pin to pin arrangement?

Went for drive up the road this afternoon to get some dinner, on the way home I home I managed to blow an intercooler pipe off. I wasn't trying that hard, was probably somewhere around 14-16psi. Wholly hell didn't it go off with a bang, sounded like a bomb went off, also happened to occur right out the front of the local Police station   As I cruised to a stop on the side of the road, I thought here we go, I was expecting a heap of cops to come out guns drawn. Hmm bit of a bummer and not a tool on board.
So give the lovely wife a call, explain what's happened tell her to come up and get the dinner to take home, also get her to grab the 1/4 drive socket set and a tin of silicon spray. A few minute later she turns up and takes dinner home, I put the pipe back on and checked the other clamps and a few of them were a bit loose. Anyway it drove better on the way home, blew less smoke and made less noise, so I'm guessing it must have been leaking a bit.
As a result I just bought a set of these off evil bay which will hopefully solve the problem long term.

To this they boltedd up a UFI clutch, replaced the rear main seal and also changed the 2 uni joints in the rear prop shaft.
They then commented on how nice the clutch felt straight out of the box, standard weight and feel and super smooth. To say the least, they were mighty impressed with the final setup. Looks like all the research has paid off.
It's off for a wheel alignment in the morning, then I'll change out my buggered steering damper, pump up the boost a bit and tidy up a few electrics.

Took the Patrol for a run up to Newcastle yesterday to pick up my new caravan :) It was a big day. All the work in getting the Patrol ready and the excitment of the new van made for an experience that could deliver soo much goodnes, or could be bitter sweet.
Headed off through Sydney in the morning and got a good run through the traffic and made good time. Sat on around 105km/hr up the free way and the Patrol sat around between 6-8psi and about 230-250deg. Pretty happy with that. Any hill was takled in 5th with sweet FA throttle required, temp gauge never moved.

Got to Newcastle no worries and picked up the new van. It was all good.

Now for the trip home. Set off with the 2.7T trailer in tow. I could feel it was there but the Patrol picked up speed with the traffic from the lights with ease, then onto the freeway. Cruised up to around 90, no problems. Moved up to around 95-100km/hr in 5th, boost was around 10-12 psi and EGT's were around 300. Pretty happy. Small hills came and went without notice, some of the slightly bigger hills or slopes I used 4th to take the load off 5th gear. For those that know the Newcastle to Sydney Freeway, there are 3 big climbs along the way, out of Ourimbah, Mooney Mooney and The Hawkesbury. These were all tackled in 4th with an intial speed of 95-100 and came out the top at 95-100 using probably somewhere between 1/2 to 2/3rds throttle. Biggest numbers I saw was 27psi, 500 Deg and the temp gauge moved up a tad but still well within normal. Happy days!!
One thing though, under heavy load it does generate quite a vibration in the 1,900 to 2,400 rev range. It doesn't feel good at all, not sure what it is. It's happens when it's making bulk torque.

How bad is the vibration? Was it there before the new flywheel

Was the clutch and flywheel assembly balanced prior to fitment?
Rocket55
3rd December 2015, 09:12 PM
The lower the revs the worse the vibration at one point I backed off on it as I thought if I kept going it would surely break something (approx 2,100rpm). It's only there under load, magnified by towing the trailer. Light throttle there's nothing, heavy throttle as an empty car you can feel it but it's not too bad.
It was there before the new clutch and flywheel, seemingly exactly the same, although I never towed with the old clutch flywheel set up. No the new clutch flywheel assembly was not balanced as a unit before install.

Haha Love it!!
I caught another van about the same size as mine just north of Gosford. Followed him down the hill into Mooney Mooney at about 100km/hr, as the hill started up the other side, back to 4th and lean on it a bit. I started catching him at a great rate of knots, I'm looking for the outside lane when he moves left and I go straight past him easily carrying 20-25km/hr more speed (if not more). I look in the left mirror and he's disappearing at a huge rate of knots, never saw him again until, you guessed it, Pennant Hills Rd. He was in a 100 Series Cruiser, it was a solid overtake, I was pretty impressed with the mighty Nissan :driving2:
Although can't help but think there’s a tortoise and the hare analogy thing in there somewhere

Not when you got the power under the right foot on tap there isn't. Well for me anyway. Lol
So its a good guess your impressed? Apart from the vibration.
Long shot but get the tailshaft looked at maybe if the engine mounts are good. Mine has a vibration at around 100 clicks, I know its my tailshaft, as from the whirring vibration, if you'd call it that (hard to explain), I reckon it needs to be balanced.
Next is a bonnet respray eh?

Yep, I'm pretty happy with it. It's really got effortless power when just driving around. I'll try and get to the bottom of the vibration over time. I just put two new uni's in the rear tailshaft as one was kaput. Bonnet gets sprayed on Monday.

hey mate apart from your mistake with cutting the bonnet did you have any issues getting everything to seal? My Cross Country Inter-cooler just arrived today just wondering if its a straight forward install.
Rocket55
4th December 2015, 11:08 PM
Hi bigfish, the intercooler itself is a piece of cake to install. The bonnet bit can be a bit fiddley, although I must admit the second time I was pretty cautious as I really didn't want to cock it twice. Really it all went together pretty well and sealed up pretty good. You can adjust the cooler up a bit if you need to, I didn't bother. When setting the position of your scoop I set the back of the scoop 12mm from the back of the bonnet. This was based on some golden advice from Bob I think it was at Fairline who makes the scoops for Cross Country.

Little job for this evening, to replace my buggered steering damper. Out with the out Pedders POS and in with a nice little FOX Series 2 unit. Came up nice and made quite an improvement, tidying the front end feel up nicely. I imagine a set of these things all round would be pretty nice.

Lately been thinking about this also,to make the most of my large cooler
arc have a nice bit of kit but expensive and only fits their scoope.
make a deflector with a right angle bracket at each end.
mount it top the bonnet under your scoope.
humm thinking thinking,
it could hang down a little below bonnet line to help stop air flow sneaking under and behind it.
some air bypassing under it could make a air curtain blocking directly behind it,
only way to tell would be to try different designs with a temp gauge on ic exit, to see what works best.

We took the new rig for a quick spin down the coast over the weekend. Left Sydney around 3pm on Friday with a balmy 35 deg air temp. Everything was going well untill we hit a couple of the bigger hills just north of Wollongong, when the EGT's hit 500 and the temp gauge started heading north, time to back off and "float" it as best as possible to the tops of hills.
Van weights in pretty much at 3T.

Had a great weekend and time to head home this arvo, much cooler, about 25 deg and nice cool wind. Everything was sweet, then we hit Mt Ousley, all temps went ape shit, EGT's 550 and water temp went out of the "normal" range on the Nissan gauge. Again backing off, and off, and off and cruised over the top in 3rd on bugger all throttle. I was running 3rd up the whole hill on about 1/4 to 1/3rd throttle at about 70km/hr, this gave me about 2,400 revs, give or take and she still got hot. This also occured for the next 3 hills over the next 5-6km, being Picton hill, Cateract ( spelling??) and Bellambi. On all ocassions it very quickly recovered once clearing the top, but it got way too hot for my liking and needs modding.
One thing I'm not sure off, when I towed it home from Newcastle I didn't have the bonnet protector on and the temps stayed pretty good, it was also a much cooler day. This time I was running the bonnet protector, maybe this was mucking up the airflow into the scoop and hence intercooler effeciency???
Anyway, time for a new radiator. 2 or 3 core, Alloy or copper/brass????? Any suggestions from those who have had success.

Your old rad might just need to be externally cleaned. I would check this first before forking out for a new one.
2 core will be fine. As for material well that is up to you. There is so many for and against material types. I have had an adrad 2 core ally unit in mine for close to 4 yrs without issue. Use to tow a 5th wheeler float usually weighing in around 3t.

Yep I'd be dumping the bonnet protector for sure.
Noticed when I had one on, any leaves caught behind it would sorta fly up ( ark motion ) over the bonnet & hit the lower windscreen, very obvious protector was creating a air flow issue directly across the bonnet.
Std temp gauges don't have to move much to "make you think" there's a problem.
Fitting a after market temp gauge could be worth while.
And std temp gauges also have a reputation of being inaccurate.
Has the radiator ever been flushed internally?.
Shining a torch directly through the core can assist you to see how much garbage is trapped externally in the fins.
x2 cleaning the radiator externally, compressed air from the back to push garbage out the way it came in gets alot out.
Same goes for the air con core, it can be block also reducing air flow.
Hows the thermostat, ever been replaced?.

I'm pretty sure its the original radiator and thermostat in there. I'll get a new thermostat and while i'm in there tap out that 3rd 12mm hole to take the sender unit for another temp gauge, I'll check how clogged up the radiator is and will also look at the condition of the fan hub. Both my inner guard covers are in place and probably 90% of the foam blocking is in place, so good on that front. I'll also check out the air con core. Thanks for the advice guys.

I just purchased a adapter from Bursons to suit the unused hole in thermostat housing, $7.
sure it was 12.5mm (male) x 1/4 npt (female) , to suit new VDO gauge.
it has a very thin wall so tightening it was a bit awkward, but worked.
did spy a 14mmx1/4 but didn't want to buy a tap for 1 hole.
the 14mm had way more meat in the wall, if I had a 14mm tap that would of been my first choice.
Take a pic tomorrow for you.

G'day Robo.I'm curious about this because I ran all over the town trying to find a 1/4npt female to m12x1.5 male , and nobody had one. Some even think they don't exist ?? Which is why I've now gone down the 1/8th npt sensor path. Even bursons as you mentioned, didn't have it.

I've also had a bit of a girls look and could find any either, but by no means did I have an exhaustive look.
Seeing as though I'm dumping the coolant anyway, I was thinking of just running a 1/4 NPT I think they are tap through it, no drilling required. Others have done it in situ, grease up the end of the tap to catch the swarf and as the coolant runs out it washes any escaping deris out with it.
Edit: 1/4 NPT.

I was 50/50 on going genuine on the passenger side too, as Patrolapart has them on special for just over $100, and you can't get 1 cent discount with Superior (well at leastI can't). I'm hoping with just the 1 mount the vibration won't be too bad. Lots of reports saying both yes and no, so who knows. Time will tell I guess. I just hope it fixes my driveline vibration under load.

Bit of mixed success tonight. I ran the drill through it a couple more times, give it a couple of big whacks and applied some heat, attacked it with an easy out and no love. Was probably a bit timid with it as I sure as hell didn't want to snap the easy out off in there. So I gave up on that and just kept on dilling, eventually as the drill was biting through it would grab and then start to screw it in further. No no. I got my little punch out and wrestled with it but it wouldn't come out, Although I was able to fold it up a bit with the punch and then drill those bit out. In the end I folded it all up towards the top of the hole then shoved the drill in there and it all came out. Unconventional maybe, but hey it's out.

In doing this I also kinda drilled away some of the existing thread, so time for an upsize, ran a bigger drill through it and cleaned it up.

Good stuff, a win and moving again.
keep us informed on the vibration issue and how your fixes are improving or not.
I also installed a superior near side Mt, & not overly impressed with the increased level of vibration at idle.
The Superior Mt is a much better captive design, but vibration is a trade off, IMO.
Read somewhere ( to late ) someone manufactures a Mt using a larger rubber bush which decreases the vib level.
But how much ?? Need some feed back on that.

Just a quick tip on drilling out broken bolts. Mate showed me how he uses left-handed drill bits, quite often they are enough to screw OUT, not in, the broken stud. Also helps when screwing in the EZ out.

Maybe those mounts will "soften" over time and absorb more vibration
smoothing out the ride a bit more.

After successfully changing the gearbox mounts (after a small mishap. Note to self, get some left handed drills) it was time to change the engine mounts. The gearbox mounts are pretty easy and straight forward, piece of cake actually, these engine mounts are a different beast and a job if I had to do it again I probably wouldn't.
First up, off with the intercooler and intake pipework between the airbox and the turbo. Out with both batteries, now you can see and touch the mounts. Then I undid the top nut on the mount and wound it off to the top of the thread, then set about cracking all the other bolts (passenger side first) seeing as though the Superior mount is going in this side I undid the engine bracket bolts as well as this gets replaced. Upon removing the little heat shield I found it was cracked nearly all the way through and probably wasn't that far from falling off, so in the bin it went, one less thing to put back on.
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/628ED150-4F2C-4ECB-8B06-5CDE12B026C0_zps3m6db31y.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/628ED150-4F2C-4ECB-8B06-5CDE12B026C0_zps3m6db31y.jpg.html)
I didt the same on the drivers side as well, only left the engine braket bolts alone.
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/344BB07C-D4D2-4B72-9CAE-1550227E6C12_zpsqtgujkjw.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/344BB07C-D4D2-4B72-9CAE-1550227E6C12_zpsqtgujkjw.jpg.html)
Next was to lift the engine, it went up easily untill the top of the fan hit the fan shoud, at this point it still needed to go another 10-15mm to clear the top of the threaded bolt in the top of the mounts, clearly this was not going to happen.
So I continued to remove the passenger side mount and engine bracket all together. All the bolts are hugely tight and access is limited so it's a time consuming exercise. Some from above and some from below.

Now to mount the Superior mount, just put it in loose, adjust the engine height a bit to line the centre bolt up then just nipped everything up.

Do everything up on both sides super tight, let the engine down and clean up. Radiator goes in tomorrow so I left the batteries and intercooler out till then.
For the record, a new mount is 51mm thick to the outside of the plates, the old passenger side mount measured 48mm and the drivers side 47mm. I did notice I coud relatively easily squash/tilt the old drivers side mount by hand and bring the plates together. (I could also do this with the new one....) The old drivers side mount showed plenty of evidence where it had been compressed with nice shinny smooth marks on the inside of the plates.

Atleast your mounts came out as 1 lol..
When I did mine I took the whole mount out. Made it much easier and you only need to take the weight of the engine then, not lift it 30mm.

First job this morning was to install the temp VDO temp gauge, it's a full sweep gauge with a 4m capilary tube. Install was pretty straight forward, went through the fire wall on the passenger side then up along the guard and over to the thermostat housing.
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/6AA27C31-4F98-4B4D-A3A8-5B92437FB39C_zps9ebtrxjo.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/6AA27C31-4F98-4B4D-A3A8-5B92437FB39C_zps9ebtrxjo.jpg.html)
Next up was to remove the 12x1.5 plug in the thermostat housing and tap it out to 1/4 NPT, just used a bit of grease on the end of the tap and the fluid to help flush it out.

I'm finding that the 1/4 NPT adaptor that came with the gauge doesn't screw in very far, but at the same time I wasn't really using a spanner, so I'll give it a crack later and see how it goes. The adaptor is pretty thin walled so i'm not sure how much stick I can give it.
Next up was to get the radiator out, pretty easy really. Drain it, remove the hoses, unclip the bottom half of the shroud and lift it out. It had a bit of mud in the bottom but not very much at all really. Sitting next to the new one (Rapid Cool 3 core)

Drained the oil as well. So in the morning, I'll get some coolant, belts and a 1/4 NPT plug just in case the temp gauge thermocoupling lets go. Yep, seems I'm always waiting for these guys. 3 other things have turned up from all over the country in the same amount of time. Goal is to try and control the temps a bit better when towing up hills. I'll see how this goes first, but I can add a bit more advance to the injector pump as this will also bring down EGT's and help with temp. What do I clean the inlet and outlet with? as I wiped it with a bit od brake cleaner and nothing came off.

Very nice Rod.
I've found all NPT fittings I used were very tight, but still had more go on them. Not sure if this is normal or not as they are compression fitting so maybe they are designed to be that way ? Heck I even had a breaker bar to put one on the other day.
I am very keen to see the results of this. Are you going to replace the thermostat as well ? Also did you have much trouble getting to the drain plug on the block close to the turbo ? Looks like a bitch to get to.

VDO are a good qualiy gauge (as are others out there) and I just like the look of them. They are also very eary to read both day and night. They also kinda match the look of the oem gauges (black background red/oranageish needle and white numbers)

Ok, that gives me hope. I did watch Pirtek crush a Brass fitting one day down to a smaller size so I am hopefull it will just find it's way in there. I haven't undone the drain plug omn the block yet, I looked for it yesterday evening and found it, but couldn't touch it. I might take the front wheel off today and have a better go at it. Failing that I'll just fill it up and go to a radiator shop and let them "power flush" it ...

I spoke to the local mechanic today about flushing the engine out. He said seeing as thought the radiator is out just pop a heater hose off an flush that till clear, then block the heater outlet which will force it through the engine and out the bottom radiator hose (which is at the top. Your engine is now full of fresh water. Install radiator and add sufficient coolant concentrate to treat the full system and top up with water. Job done. That's all they do when you order a coolant flush.

Found out my fan hub was not delivered last Friday as they had my address wrong, so it's just been sitting there patiently waiting for somebody to enquire about it. I hate currier companies, customer service is the last thing on their minds. Hopefully I'll drive out to their depot in the morning, pick it up and then put this bloody thing back together.
I'm not going to flush it now, simply just fill it up and go, couldn't be stuffed pulling the exhaust off to get to the drain plug.
PS: Picked up a new thermostat and gasket for it also.

in all fairness, if they had posted them the day of the order it can take up to 10 days to get as the post goes by train or road even if its an overnight bag, i have paid extra and waited 4 days for an overnight from oz post, not saying they did send them the same day but its not called Wait A while for nothing :)

It's not the transit time as such that sh1ts me, it's the courier companies attitude when a parcel doesn't get delivered as apparently scheduled. Rather than just putting it on the truck the for the next day (which on 3 seperate occasions, various courier companies have said this is their process) they just put it in the corner and leave it there until somebody starts making enquiries about. Utterly pathetic service if you ask me.
Oh yeah, have you seen he video on faceache currently doing the rounds where the courier (big brand name courier) pulls up out the front, the driver fills in the "sorry we missed you" card, gets out, walks up the the letter box and puts the card in there, jumps in his van and drives off. Makes absolutely no attemp to even knock on the door to see if anyone is home. Obviously paid per address and not per delivery.

Not much happened today, getting parts, waiting for parts. Managed to complete the oil change and change the fuel filter, sort out my thermocoupling issue, also put a new thermostat in. The long bolt came out OK, they've got never sieze on them now so should be right in the future.

Put the A/C belt on, but I think old mate who measured the Alternator belt was on drugs when he did it and it doesn't fit, so something else to swap tomorrow... on the bright side the power steer belt fits. Put the starting battery back in also. Feels good again to be actually put stuff back on as opposed to taking it off.
Also noticed today 3 things under the car today.
1) When old mate changed the clutch he relocated my wiring lume for the trailer power and plugs he successfully let it lay on the exhaust and melt through, there's bare wires showing, no fuses have dropped so it must be earth wires. Something else to fix.
2) There's a pin hole in the exhaust pipe flange that bolts onto the dump pipe, and
3) I think with the new mounts it's moved the engine slightly and the exhaust goes very very close to the chassis and is actually touching one of those little metal brackets that holds the plastic inserts to support the steel transmission breather lines. For now I'll just remove the bracket, they're only steel breathers.
I think I'll combine issue 2 and 3 together and go to an exhaust joint to get the hole welded up and see if they can pursuade the pipe over 10mm or so, while it's there get the muffler chopped out and replaced with a little hotdog/resonator just to give it a bit more note.

The long bolt moved a tiny bit then sorta loaded up again, so I stopped and retightened it, lossened it, etc. a few times maybe on 1/8 of a turn each time, then I sprayed it with WD and went and had dinner, etc. A couple of hours later had another go at it and out it came. They ow have neversieze on them. The original thread is probably only 10mm deep as the 12mm plug only has about 3 threads on it. I ran the NPT tap as far in as I could, which was probably about 20mm.
It's a little blurry put this is probably the best pic I have of the newly threaded hole.

After a few morning shopping activities for tomorrow and getting our new Miele dishwasher installed, well nearly installed, our cavity is about 2mm to narrow and it won't go in, so Miele will send a cabinet maker over next week to alter the cavity so it does fit, free of charge, god love Miele. Anyway after this I bolted over to Eastern Creek to pick up my fan hub. Here's the new verse old, bigger more agressive fan and a much bigger hub.

Now to install it, 4 bolts I thought, well how wrong was I... First take the adaptor plate off and bolt this to the pully (the 4 bolts, then bolt the fan hub to the adaptor plate (4 unbelievably short nuts, but do able), then bolt the fan to the hub (4 more bolts). Doesn't sound too bad, but trying to work this out the first time with no instructions and to do it you actually need to disassemble the hub/adaptor plate from how it was shipped. Here's the fan and hub in position.

Radiator out, fan shroud in and then radiator back in. This step was definitely a major pain in the arse to do, I had many goes at it and couldn't make it work. After a few calls back to UFI (interupting there Xmas drinks - cudos to them for even answering) I confirmed the order of the step, which is what I was doing, I just obviously need to hold my tongue differently. So I enlisted the help of my apprentise aka the missus and we got it in pretty easily really. Probem was as I stood in front of the car on my stool holding the radiator and sliding it in, I could see behind it to line things up and manipilate as required.
To all those that say these fans don't fit with anything other than the standard 2 core alloy radiator, I say try a bit harder ;)

I was pretty excited to get this far, as the rest was all down hill from there. Hook up the 2 radiator hoses, overflow hose, put the bottom of the shroud on, airbox to turbo pipe work in, VDO temp sensor in, 2nd battery in, intercooler back on. Bit of an issue here as the Cross Country intercooler frame now hits the new radiator, so with a bit of a bend here and there, it now clears the radiator. Drilled a new hole in the radiator support panel, put a 8mm nutsert in and bolted the newly positioned intercooler support frame into position. Filled it up with cooland and job done!!

Checked for tools, then fired it up. All good. There is definitely more vibration and low down resonance with the Superior mount, at first it was terrible, although after taking it up to the shops and back it settled down a bit. You can still definitely hear and feel it, it's quiet a low frequency rumble and vibration. Once over about 1,800 rpm you dont notice it anymore. I'm also pleased to find out the TD tick tick tick is largely gone and replaced by fan noise, but not a windy fan noise, it kinda makes it sound smooth and more car like, wierd to explain. I did notice that my VDO temp gauge didn't really go beyond 65-70 deg so I'll have to see how that goes. The gauge light is also very dim also, job for later.
So overall pretty happy with how it turned out. New gerabox mounts, engine mounts, thermostat, radiator, fan, fan hub, belts, coolant, oil, oil filter, fuel filter. Big few days. :D

I took mine for a spin out to Bathurst and back yesterday, 250km each way up over the Great Dividing Range and basically it sat between 65-75 the whole way. Out near Lithgow on the back of the ranges there's a section that's 110km, so 110 I did straight up the hill in 5th at about 20 psi. EGT's were about 400 air temp about 25 and the VDO gauge made it to 80. If this is true I'm seriously happy as the hill was about 1km long. Coming home there is a couple of long up hill pulls, realatively steep, pre mods this had me back to 4th full throtle and dropping back to about 85-90km, so this time up I go in 5th at about 105km, accelerated beyond that a few times to pass cars, temps got up to around 80-85, air temp high 20's. PS: loving the power... Cruising down the hill saw temps around 60-65 quite often, occasionally going to 70. I've read lots of reports of these things running mid to high 90's just cruising along at 100-110, at these speeds on the flat I'm barely seeing 70. So I'm really stumped on whether the gauge is reading right or it's just running nice and cool. I fear the first is true, whilst secretely hoping for the second.

When I was under the wagon the other day I noticed that my nice new cable run was lying against the exhaust. Bummer. I'm guessing when old mate mechanic put my clutch and flywheel in somehow he let this happen. After tieing it back up and pulling the fuses I got around to fixing it today. As it turned out it was the earth wire that was exposed and luckily not the active.

So out with the old and in with some new cable and conduit. That conduit contains 3 twin core cables in total. 2 x 8 B&S and 1 x 6mm, these feed and Anderson plug for charging the caravan batteries, feed the caravan fridge and carry the trailer brake signal from the unit to the plug. Luckily the wire was untouched. Not that hard to fix, but just a pain in the arse that I had to do it.

I couldn't get it on top or on the outside of the chassis till almost after the gearbox as it was too thick, a bit bigger than a 20 cent piece. So down besides the gearbox / slave cyclinder etc. it does get a bit tight, but there's plenty of clearance if kept neat and tidy.
You are right, it's amazing what you can see with a creeper and a torch.

Your steering query.
Your castor wont help but you are getting a few small things happening that makes it feel that way.
You will be getting a small amount of rear steer. This is normal for a patrols rear suspension geometry. Your castor as you have said wont be helping. Also as your front left hand corner rises your steering arm will slightly alter in its position. So all very minor things that equate to what your feeling. You have a good chunk of torque now so you will be getting quite a bit of movement under hard acceleration.
I know your rear end is in good nic since you have just fitted all that new superior gear.

Blasted up the hills at 80-90km/hr which last time saw me backing off as the factory gauge was hitting the very top of the normal range, this time, it didn'teven move. Super happy so far!!! Mods included new 3 core Rapid Cool radiator, UFI fan and fan hub some new coolant and the removal of the bonnet protector. Air temp is low 20's. Hopefully it continues like this.

Hey mate. Quick Q regarding the install.
How did you go plugging the into the standard loom. Did you get a plug and play loom or was it a direct plug in setup.?

There's theory and apparent scientific proof that supports it and also supports that it makes absolutely no difference. I can't comment for sure as I changed many things at once.

I'm open to input mate but I struggle to see how it could make a difference , I don't imagine it changes the vortex of the airflow across the front when you already have a big arse bull bar that disturbs that and I don't imagine it insulates the front edge of the Bonnet so much that the bonnet gets hot and doesn't let it cool thus heating up components under there -ie radiator but then again I could be wrong .

The bonnet protector supposedly bounces the incoming air upwards enough, so that it's sending it over the bonnet scoop, compared to without the bonnet protector. There was a video somewhere with a bloke doing it with feathers and a camera on the bonnet.
And also one where the bloke had an industrial fan setup, coated the the top of inercooler with Lanolin and sprinkled dust into the fan and a lot of the intercooler surface remained clean. Then he repeated it with no bonnet scoop and much more air/dust went into the scoop.
This wasn't the video, I can't seem to find it. BUt it was similar to what this guy has done ....

I seem to remember that vid as well, and it was fairly conclusive that the bonnet protector made a huge negative difference to the airflow through the scoop

I'll start on removing the injector pump after dinner.
how difficult was it to get the turbo off? Had issues just getting the dump pipe off this past weekend, couple of studs snapped, Did you just unbolt your exhaust, unbolt your dump pipe and then undo the 4 bolts on the manifold?
Rocket55
19th January 2016, 07:08 AM
It came out pretty easy actually. I did spray the turbo to manifold bolts with WD-40 for a few days before trying to remove the turbo. The car never moved during this time. Then I undid the 3 bolts that connect the exhaust to the dump pipe, then the 4 bolts that connect the turbo to the manifold then lifted the turbo with dump pipe still attached out.mto do this I had to remove the inlet and outlet pipes from the turbo, but they are 3 simple bolts each. The 4 turbo to manifold bolts are a royal PITA to get at, I ended up using an open ended spanner (a good quality one), but got away with it, otherwise to me it looked like a manifold off job, which I wasn't interested in doing.

My 08 stock stereo has 3 plugs on the back.. the main 2 which obviously control the bulk of the radio..
But the 3rd goes to the bottom corner..
wires are black. Light green and purple.
As you can see the aerpro does not connect to it?? Any idea what it is??
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/01/215.jpg
And just my luck the jvc plug is a mini so the aerpro doesn't fit.
So hodge..
I'm guessing most the colors are standard on the aerpro?
My unit has a separate reverse wire and park light switch..
Would they be the missing wires on the 3rd plug??

I only connected up the two plugs on mine as well... I had to connect a spare wire for the power antenna, but that was straight forward and All works fine - 08 GU
Only minor issue I've had since is lack of reception because I cut one of the antenna cables instead of using an adaptor

Finally got around to reinstalling my Superior upper and lower arms. As you know my first set of Superior bushes flogged out after about 3,000km. Superior eventually agreed to pick the 4 arms up from my place and then courier them back to my place after they put some "proper" bushes in them. Time will tell how they go I guess.

Bit sad aye. Superior are generally pretty good. I dont know why they would risk some of their rep with inferior bushes
Rocket55
28th February 2016, 08:04 PM
Yep, apparently if you buy genuine Nissan bushes 10,000 at a time you get them for about $20 each. Storey has it that Superior found "equivalent" bushes out of China for $3 each and this is what we got, I mean this is the "bad batch" of bushes that came through...

Took the caravan up to Newcastle yesterday for its first service/inspection (won't be going back ever again but that's another storey for another time..) and had to fill in the day, so off to Stockton I go. With all the extra power and torque I was pretty keen to see how it went. Effortless is the only word I could use. Tyres at 16psi, 2nd gear hi range and it just went anywhere I pointed it. EGT's between 250-300 and engine temp 80-85. I could slow down to cross big soft ruts and then just power off again from low revs with a small flex of the right foot, a puff of black soot and we were cruising again.
