Thought I'd start off a bit of a build thread on my wagon. It's a 2010 CRD auto with 58,000km on it. It came with a few bits, but is pretty stock. Currently its got 33"AT's, Dual batteries, extra power outlets in the cab and wagon, LED driving lights window tint and that's about it.

This weekend I started my mods and I fear it's going to be all down hill from here

Started off with an earth strap, nothing to difficult and just easing my way into the Patrol pool starting at the shallow end.

All went well with this, made the engine note change, sounds meatier now and changes gear a bit sharper, go figure.

Well with my new found confidence I installed (partially anyway) my DVD headrests into the Patrol. Getting into these seats is a bit more difficult than getting into the Hilux seats, and had me stumped for a bit, but in the end I won out. Once in the seat it's an easy install. Pull the cable through, tidy them up, poke them out the bottom, put the seat back together and your set.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/DVD5_zpse82f606c.jpg

Job for next weekend (or maybe during the week) is to pull the centre console out and wire them up. Basic procedure, there a magic box with the headrests, simply yellow to yellow, black to black and add power and they work. While I'm there I'll run a set of RCA leads up the front to link my head unit into the system when I eventually get around to replacing it.

Threw a set of Supercheap heavy duty black canvas seat covers on while I was going. They look good now, but lets see if I still think that in 6 months time ;)

Hi Everyone,

I caught up with Rod yesterday for a beer at the pub. We had a good gander at his car and it is sooooo clean. Really neat inside and out. He's a top bloke too, we chatted over a couple of beers and he told me he has big plans for his rig. im not sure if it has been mentioned but hes come over from the Dark side having recently owned a Hilux, i told him he made the right decision =P

Cheers again for the catchup Rod looking forward to planning a local trip. Anyone else around the area should jump on in and come along!

Looking good. The problem with this Forum is the number of good ideas and mods that will be deemed "essential", a warning from someone who has done all lot of mods, it never ends :)

Like Rod, I too once owned a Hilux, unbreakable ? BULLDUST, it cost me a fortune fixing all the things that broke on it. I only realised how bad the Hilux really was to drive once I bought the Patrol. If only someone had told me BEFORE I bought the 'lux :(

Welcome along rod and good luck with the bank loan :)

It was great catching up with you Nic, contrary to popular belief, top blokes can and do drive Patrols :smiley_thumbs_up: I was thinking the whole time you look very familiar and I'm sure we've meet before, but I can't for the life of me work out where. Happy to go for a spin when possible.

Yes I have come from the Dark side, although they're not that bad. TimE and Stropp as a moderator on the Hilux forum I know only too well about all the essential mods the forum can provide and my old Hilux was a walking, talking demonstration of this.

It started out like this
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics/IMG00147-20101223-0943_1.jpg

And about $28,000 later ended up twin locked like this ( shocked the crap out of me when I added it up :jawdrop::jawdrop:
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/2012%2007%2022%20Zig%20Zag%204wd/20120722145115_0006.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/2012%2007%2022%20Zig%20Zag%204wd/20120722145115_0006.jpg.html)

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/2012%2007%2022%20Zig%20Zag%204wd/20120722151810_0001.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/2012%2007%2022%20Zig%20Zag%204wd/20120722151810_0001.jpg.html)

Hoping the Patrol turns out Ok as it's got a fair bit to live up to, but I'm quietly confident that with a 3-4" lift, front locker, shimmed LSD, 35's, etc. it should hold it's own. :D

Given that ATM I'm broke, I'm just working on some of the nice things to have like power outlets, LEDs, tidy wiring, (DVD headrests came out of the Hilux), etc. building the platform as they say.

BTW, Ben-e-boy and others, take note, Rod claims he had either 10" or 14" of wheel travel in the above IFS lux. so i cant wait to see what hell try to get out of his new troll.

also, you been involved in any sports in the local area? i think you looked vaguely farmiliar but just like you i cant figure out why but i guesss the truth will come out eventually lol.

Rocket55

14" I wish  sway bars and progressive bump stops limited the travel a bit, but made it really nice on the bigger bumps, it's all a trade off. I played soccer and squash in the area for 20+ years. Could have just been up the pub also.

Well, today my new ride had a little upgrade. After running OziExplorer in my Hilux on the little 7" double DIN screen for my mapping, I was determined to do something different this time and make something a bit easier to see and user friendly. The OziExplorer on the Windows CE platform just seemed "hard" to use, well at least for me anyway.

With a bit of inspiration from fellow interwebers I set upon installing my iPad into my truck in a way that worked. This is what I did.

First I bought this stuff $78

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0691_zpsf6ed1cae.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0692_zps70ffa8b7.jpg

and then put it together for a bit of a dry run. Looks good :D

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0695_zps8c207e6c.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0694_zpsa278eb0a.jpg

Now where to mount it? I was keen for a stealth mounting solution, the last thing I wanted to do was cannibalise the dash, so I picked on the little cubby house storage pocket at the top of the dash with the flip up lid.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0698_zpse9416906.jpg

Time now to rip the dash apart. Comes apart pretty easy actually.

Now to mount the base to the back of the pocket. The RAM units are made out of high quality aluminium and feature a rubber coated ball which grips the arm very well. Luckily for me RAM decided to make the diameter of the base unit about half a millimetre smaller than the height of the back of the pocket, couldn't have designed it any better if you tried. Placed it in there and drilled some holes, then bolted it up with some 6x16 button head bolts and nyloc nuts.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0700_zps0f38b7f0.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0701_zpsaabc6ba2.jpg

Then reassembled the dash

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0704_zps2ac0396b.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0705_zps24fcfe1b.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0706_zpsa7abc02c.jpg

Looks like it was meant to be there. Test fitted the arm and iPad holder

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0707_zps7d252203.jpg

Perfect fit :D :D :first:

Rocket55
10th August 2014, 12:10 AM
Now to test it out, bring in the iPad

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0721_zps6415489a.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0723_zps51948a8e.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0722_zpse08f1ecb.jpg

Perfect fit. The base of the iPad is about 10mm in front of the silver pen tray on the dash and the arm rests on the base of the pockect to help hold the weight. It doesn't block the use/view of the radio and absolutely has zero impact on your forward vision, perfect location. It's as solid as a rock and doesn't move at all. Very pleased with the end result.

While I was there I put a couple of COB LED map lights in, mega bright.

Looks good mate, i think Megatexture has his iPad mounted exactly the same way. Good spot for the ram mount and on my list for sure. On my recent Simpson trip though i found that the iPad stood up in the pen trough at the front of that flip up perfectly an i just use a little gaffa tape to each side to hold t in the position. sat there for 5,000kms including a Desert Crossing and some serious corrugations.

While it was all apart fitting a 12v or USB charging point in the back next to the Ram mount would have been a winner for sure! I was just going to use some self tappers but i like your big washers, if i do that though and pull it fully apart then a charging point will go in too.

I can also tell you for sure you WILL NOT need to shim your rear LSD! Welcome to Nissans mate. The Nissan LSD is the Ducks Guts! Leave the shims for the Toys. You wont get it much tighter than the factory did! In 4WD Low Range i am unable to do a U Turn or Tight turn at all on Bitumen for diff wind up! Crazy tight.

Enjoy you Nissan. I like White ones ;)

I saw Megatextures install and plagiarised it, it's a winning idea. I have a USB socket coming to go next to the RAM mount, that's why it's off to one side, but ebay let me down and it didn't turn up in time. There's a problem anyway as there's only about 7mm clearance behind the pocket to the aircon ducting, so I'm thinking the USB socket is going to have to be mounted against a false back and will consume a bit of real estate inside the pocket?? When it turn up, I'll pull it apart and see what I come up with.

I like white ones too, can't see the pin striping. I'm hoping the Patrol LSD lives up to its reputation.

That would be great, I remembered reading your build and you made mention of it, but I didn't see the finished product and after I pulled mine apart I thought I worked out why. If you've made it fit I'd be keen to see that. There is probably room to mount it in the sides of the pocket or even in the roof of the pocket??

megatexture
8th September 2014, 08:58 PM
The USB I used is a surface mount one and it gave no issue to fit.
The cord hanging out is a audio input plug for IPods etc

You could mount it without the panel and screws but mounting like that would require the dash to come off to change the fuse on it.

Wow, I'm intrigued as to how you got that in there. I only have about 7mm behind the pocket before I hit the air on ducting covered by the foam in the pic below

Welcome to the world of Patrol's
Like the mods you've done mate, no doubt it'll be just the tip of the iceberg.
Don't worry about playing with the LSD, they're nothing like the Toyota offering (which is limited and it slips)
Nissan LSD are built as a cone, so even with a worn clutch pack, the design is suck that it will still provide positive lockup, one of the reasons a lot of the guys in toy it's put them under comp trucks.

I'm keen to find out and see what it's like, but need to get some sliders under it first (there're on order currently) and get a bit of lift under it to stop it dragging it's arse on the ground, can't believe how low they are as stockers. If I took it out with my mates where we usually go, there'd be nothing left of the sills :-(

I've got a set of Bolsy's on order, hopefully be here next week or there abouts.

Next on the list is suspension and a rear bar.

What's to go with bash plates under these things? Back in my IFS Hilux world, front bash plates were one of the first things you did as the stock ones weren't any better than a piece of alfoil. But all my Patrol has is a plastic wind deflector ;-) yet there doesn't seem to be much talk about it or market for it, or have I just been living under a rock..

Hey Rod,

the Bloke who makes the "Harris Hardcase" did a limited run of steering damper protectors to replace that plastic piece of rubbish tucked under the front, but i dont think he is doing any more. apart from that i dont know of anyone who is doing/has done them?

Well bit of an update today, I've been slowly accumulating bits and pieces and decided to tackle a few jobs. First up was to remove the stupid sunglass holder that my sunnies don't fit in anyway and replace it with a functional almost factory looking switch panel..

First up prime and paint the panel

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/538ABBC5-A89B-4CD9-9217-F290CF03A28F_zpsdsupb5lh.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/538ABBC5-A89B-4CD9-9217-F290CF03A28F_zpsdsupb5lh.jpg.html)

Then remove the overhead console and the sunglass holder

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/F75638F3-88BC-43BD-9CDA-7C2987D46F97_zps9fw5ay6m.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/F75638F3-88BC-43BD-9CDA-7C2987D46F97_zps9fw5ay6m.jpg.html)

Make up some little aluminium retaining clips and secure the new switch panel

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/01157C61-024D-411F-A932-0E17BF603848_zpsefxnrfyp.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/01157C61-024D-411F-A932-0E17BF603848_zpsefxnrfyp.jpg.html)

Now the fun part. Remove all the bits that hold the headlining up and the A pillar cover. I was going to use trailer wire but the stuff I had was to thin, so I just ran 6 x 3mm twin core up there.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/3876F68C-B074-41BA-B236-874C245CC1B5_zpsjoxh1ju0.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/3876F68C-B074-41BA-B236-874C245CC1B5_zpsjoxh1ju0.jpg.html)

Cable tied them all together and to a roof support so they don't rattle in the roof and run them down the A pillar to a Baintech 6 way fuse block

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/721179D6-585D-42CE-B411-6ABE9A88A878_zpszbtmh5xn.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/721179D6-585D-42CE-B411-6ABE9A88A878_zpszbtmh5xn.jpg.html)

Install the switches, wire them up and put it all back together.

Another update:

While I was installing my overhead switches I ran all the wiring for the dash cam, it just fits behind the mirror. I'm contemplating painting the back of the mirror a dark grey to hide the camera a bit.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0803_zps658f6aa1.jpg

The following weekend I installed my winch. A few weeks ago I picked up a Runva 11XP. The winch slips in from underneath really easily and bolts up through the front of the bull bar. This means the rope has to spool off the top of the drum, no big deal, just means it gets mounted with the gearbox on the drivers side. Because of this I had to remove the gearbox and rotate it 90 degrees to bring the level back up to the top, this took less than 10 minutes.

Because the top mounting bolts also hold on the fairlead, I had to get 10mm longer bolts.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/DCF88DEA-E0E5-4F69-8592-81007FD05FFC_zpsoy580ww5.jpg

I popped the grill out (undoing those two bottom clips was a PITA, next time I'll just replace them with little bolts) which gave me tonnes of access to wire up the winch. There's cavernous amounts of room behind the grill, but nothing to mount the solenoid box to. So I made a bracket that spans the chassis rails and mounted it to that just drivers side of centre. While I was there I wired up a couple of Hella LED numberplate lights I had lying around from a previous project to light up the drum behind the grill, pretty straight forward and worked a treat.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/0612F630-C382-4FA9-A276-265B4375840A_zpshrkgn2j8.jpg

In this pic which is looking straight down from above the car you can see my bracket, solenoid box and LED lights

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/8DD916DD-803D-4ED8-9C53-4C9A0E6C00CB_zpsynur5lsq.jpg

To finish it off I installed a strip of LED just above the fairlead to light up the front of the car. The internal switch which activates the winch also turns on the lights, should make winching of a night time a bit easier, well that was my rational, but really its just a bit of LED bling and wank factor :harhar:

Thanks Skip, it's starting to come along. I'm starting to look at suspension packages atm. Current thinking is 3" lift (not too high, not too low), Superior springs and Profender adjustable remote res shocks. Then to bolt a set of 35's onto it.

An Opposite Lock Slim Line (Windcheater) roof rack and 40" Aurora light bar might slip in there along the way too. I'm thinking maybe a 2m rack as opposed to a 2.2m rack is better as it keeps the light bar back a bit from the top of the screen....

Well slowly getting the new bus ready, today I installed some front recovery points (not that I'll need them )

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0845_zps3ccebda6.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0847_zpsc704d79f.jpg

Also installed a little extension bracket so the small rear barn door opens up to 90 degrees

Before

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0848_zpse18ad5d1.jpg

During

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0850_zpsd24e6785.jpg

and after

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0851_zps55deccb6.jpg

It's not much, but you can see the extra opening amount where the door lines up against the tail light in the rear bumper, makes all the difference for the mounting position of the fridge.

Now just to finish installing the other bits that are here or will be here by the weekend

- Barn door table (just finishing off painting it)
- Driving lights
- Sliders
- Snorkel
- Volt meters
- USB plugs

That's probably enough for now. :D

They kinda draw heaps more amps than the other set so a whole new wiring install was required.

While the front was all apart I ran winch controls up into the cab.

In testing the lights I made a rookie mistake  I left the grill out to make adjustments easier and drove off with the grill clips still sitting on the bull bar, so now I need to get some new ones...

Now for the scary bit, time to mount up the snorkel. I opted for a TJM snorkel, well, because I like the look of them, nice and neat.

Laid out on the installation table, you can see my barn door table on the end of the table. This is just needing another coat of paint and then it goes on too.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0866_zpsb7cf06ff.jpg

The clean up and guard preparation, I gave it a quick polish, easier to do it without a snorkel on. Jacked it up, put it on a stand and removed the wheel for access.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0865_zps9aaa3c61.jpg

The strip out begins, airbox out, battery and tray out, inner guard out, arial out.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0868_zps05bddca3.jpg

Stick on the template.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0867_zpsb1e727f8.jpg

Centre punch, take some brave pills and drill some holes. Always feels better after the first one and nothing happened. I don't know what I was expecting to happen after all it's just sheet metal, but I had visions of the drill wandering around across the guard, the car falling off the stand, something blowing up... anyway it all went pretty smoothly :D

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0869_zps6ae42c9d.jpg

Now time for the big sucker, 111mm diameter. More brave pills, get a grip and just do it. Nice steady pressure, a good speed, not to fast and not too slow, although I did find that it worked better when spun faster that what I thought was a good speed. I found on my 3 speed drill, I was in 2nd gear at about 3/4 rpms. Remember to stop regularly as you can generate enough heat to burn the existing paint and cause it to bubble away from the guard, well at least that was the tip I was given by TJM when I picked up the snorkel.

TIP: mask over the rubber strip between the flare and the guard, as hot filings will burn into the rubber (again I was told this by my friendly TJM store).

Phew All done 8-)

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0870_zps45a2ddf5.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0871_zpsaa22eab6.jpg

A bit of stuffing around, stacks of Sensor Safe Sikaflex 227, a few swear words, late for dinner and whollar its on :D

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0872_zps77e32944.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0873_zps446583b6.jpg

I did find there was a substantial gap between the airbox and the duct that goes through the guard. I removed and threw away that stupid foam seal on the flange of the airbox, how is anyone suppose to seal anything with that there. Anyway with his missing, one side was touching and the other side had about a 5-6mm gap :o I'm thinking WTF! Nothing a generous helping of Sikaflex won't fix, a good bead around both surfaces, airbox in and I could see it squeegee out all the way around, put everything else back in and job done.

When I was lifting the battery into position, the stupid bloody handle broke causing the battery to drop down and land on top of the guard, put a nice dent in it :mad:

More swear words were said and lessons learned. ALWAYS put something over the guard when doing this!

The handle on the battery was on of those rope type jobs with the plastic tube to grip. It just cut through the rope where it goes through the battery.

I love the switches in the sunglass holder on the roof console

It's pretty neat hey. I got the panel from a member named Woodizz on the P4x4 forum, cost $30 including postage and comes laser cut and fits perrrfectly.

The only thing I found was the panel is too thick where the switches go through. The Carling switches have the little spring plastic clips that squish and then expand on the inside of the hole, but you'll notice that when you squish them the other end of the clip opens up and allows the switch to separate. The thick material was holding the clips in the squished position which allowed the switches to separate when connecting/removing the wires. I ended up with a car full of springs and switch mechanisms. :(

So out it came and I attacked it with a file and just bevelled the inside edges to allow the switch clips to open back up again inside the hole, took about 10 minutes and works perfectly now. :first:

Question: That tiny little drain hole in the airbox, you know the one that's about 4mm in diameter. I'm assuming/appreciating this needs to be blocked off otherwise what's he point of the snorkel. How then does the airbox deal with rain, hoses from washing the car, etc. that will inevitably end up going down the snorkel? Surely, if you ended up with a bit of water in there, and it wouldn't be that hard to do, it will pool and turn the paper air filter element to mush in no time at all.

In saying this, all the tell tail mud splatter stains on the inside of the airbox all indicate that the muddy water came UP THROUGH this little hole, so maybe blocking it off does more good than harm.

Ok. I was thinking of 3 options.

1 - fill it with Sikaflex, pretty permanent solution
2 - put a self tapper in it, allows it to be opened up or closed off as required, ie: remove it for the wheelin weekend
3 - leave it open and if required put a blob of grease on it before tackling a big crossing.

Hey Rocket. Is that a earth from body to frame??? I havent seen that one yet. Might do that to mine. What does it help with?? Great looking build so far.

Rocket55
28th November 2014, 06:40 PM
It sure is. From what I've reasearched and what I can see, Patrols actually don't have an earth that goes between the two. The only wiring between the two is the wiring for the sub tank transfer pump. So if you start earthing spot lights, winches etc. to the bullbar, ie the chassis. It finds its way back through the fuel pump wiring which quickly creates havoc with its operation. Other symptoms that people have reported is bad radio reception and central locking not working. There are others but I can't remember now. Basically if you have some wierd electrical stuff happening, whack an earth in and in a lot of cases most of it will go away.

While I was in the fixing mood, I added a dual USB plug in the centre cubby hole to charge the iPad whilst off road. Works a treat and keeps all the cords tidy and not dangling down all over the place (one of my pet hates)

Also threw some ports in the back of the centre console to keep the kids happy

Ok, a bit of an update to the wagon, been a bit slow of late.

First off I picked up a second hand roof rack and basket (Thanks Nic :D ). This will come in mighty handy when getting out and about with the extended family.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1100-1_zpsgq0a8ruc.jpg

This allowed me to get an awning, pretty happy with this one 2.5 x 3m ($198 delivered :D ) It's great.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1104-1_zps234vszcc.jpg

Next on the list was to get some more lights going. The rack had an old set of lights on the front on some pretty good brackets, so these came off and got rubbed back, rust converted, primed and rust guarded in Satin Black. Came up good.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1101-1_zpsdavhb4fv.jpg

Then bolted some LEDs on there that were originally on the bulbar. They only sit about 10mm higher than the front of the basket, might bend them down a bit yet.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1116-1_zpsyrmazrit.jpg

Now just to wire them up. I have a couple of Carling rocker switches coming to work the roof lights, reversing lights and some left and right side flood lights.

Got itchy feet this afternoon after a planned outing feel through, so took to the centre console with a Dremil and mounted my 2 volt meters.

Stupid bloody thin silver paint Nissan use, you can see where the UHF cord has rubbed the paint off :furious: . Something else to fix latter, might wrap it. I think they came up well. I've got a DPDT mini rocker switch coming so I can have them permanently On / Off / On with ignition for both the starter and 2nd battery. I need to get a relay and use an ignition wire to trigger the relay to bring in the 2nd batter for the ignition only display. Sounds like a job for next weekend. :D

Wow thats a change!! A massive change. Better?

Rocket55
24th March 2015, 07:29 PM
I've got to say it do like it better from an overall perspective. Around town the CRD eats it. Travelling or touring at anything over 70km/hr and the TD eats the CRD. In saying that the CRD was stock and the TD has a 3" exhaust and tune of the stock pump and turbo.

ako89
25th March 2015, 01:41 PM
Upgrade the turbo and pump and you will be very happy with. I have a 12mm pump and bigger turbo, making approx. 260hp. goes extremely well.

also how did you go with mod plating the conversion. your car is 2010 ?

Rocket55
25th March 2015, 05:32 PM
It's a different wagon, the 2010 CRD is sitting out the front and will be moved on. This one is a 2005 factory Td42ti.

In time it will get the kind of mods you have described and hopefully some solid performance.

Small bit of maintenance today to get the beast back out on the road after it's been sidelined in the shed for the last week with a failed clutch slave cylinder. It was a pretty straight forward job to replace it, made longer by yours truely forgetting to put the little heat shield on, meaning the cylinder had to come off and go back on again :-(. With the aid of my trusty mate Nic who came up to give me a hand, bleeding it was relatively straight forward. Test drove and all was good.

Great to see your rig up and running again Nic, and big thanks for giving me a hand with the slave cylinder. :-)

Well a little job for this afternoon. Finally got around to installing the above ERG blocking plate. Pretty straight forward thing to do after you pull the intercooler off. In doing this I found that just about every one of the intake hoses were loose, with the clamps being only slightly tighter than finger tight.

Anyway, put the plate in and then removed the butterfly from the housing in the red circle, don't know what you call it.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1384-1_zpsxueebu0y.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1385_zpsr9qot8k3.jpg

Put it all back together and tightened it all up. :D

Wow, instantly better. It boosts earlier and that pesky flatspot at 2,200rpm (feels like you run into a wall) has gone :D 8-) :D . It revs so much freer now and so much nicer to drive. Feels much quicker. Don't know if it's making any more power as such, but definitely much nicer and easier to drive.

I was hoping those loose pipes were causing the sucking type sound I can hear from the intercooler, but alas that sound is still there when the boost comes up. Couldn't see any obvious leaks from the intercooler, so back to the drawing board. Hoping the next set of mods will sort that out once and for all.

Time now to rip the dash apart. Comes apart pretty easy actually.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_0699_zps704b021a.jpg

Hey Rocket, are you able to put up a quick and dirty on how you pulled this apart? I am keen on a similar install including the USB charger.

Many thanks.

Rocket55
17th May 2015, 08:01 PM
It's very easy to pull this apart LB, literally only a couple of minutes.

Start by removing the 2 screws just above the temperature control know, these nearly point straight up so you'll need to have a little look see.

Once these are out, simply grab the silver panel and pull it off. It comes straight back towards you, ie: towards the back of the car. I find it easiest to start with the bottom right hand corner, pop this out, then bottom left and pop this out, then just pop the top off. It's only held on by spring clips.

Unplug the rear demister and hazard light switches.

Once the radio surround is off, you'll see 3 screws that hold the bottom of the aircon vents in. Remove these. Grap the vents and unclip them from the dash, ie. Pull them towards you. They are a bit stiff but the come out. Again I start with one side at a time. The vents don't feel too strong so be a bit careful and sensible here.

Now for the tricky bit. You'll now find the whole air vent panel ie: the two air vents and the centre storage box is loose and only being held in at the top in the centre. There is a plastic clip there. It's a spring loaded "tongue" that goes through a slot. The tongue is on the car and the slot is on the panel which comes off (I think). I use a small screwdriver and squeeze it in between the dash and the panel, coming from the side as opposed to straight in and depress the tongue to release the panel. It can be a bit fiddly.

Once you get it, it's off.

When putting it back together, don't forget to plug the switches back in.

This drawing might help you.

Well the last of a few goodies turned up today. Pretty excited to start putting them in. Iv got a pirouette and boost gauge but nothing yet for the 3rd spot. Not sure what to put in there yet. Water temp? oil temp? Oil pressure, fuel pressure? Clock haha.

Question I do have though is when connecting the boost gauge into a rubber hose (the one coming off the the intercooler). I cut the rubber hose put in a "T" piece, how do I connect the hard plastic VDO tube to this "T" piece? Or do I need a T piece that has barbs on the straight through part and a threaded piece on the T side to accept the VDO fitting? If so, any tips on the thread, size and where to get it from?

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1516_zpsipghz3kg.jpg

I got the auto opening mechanism, took a few minutes to adjust it all up but it works a treat :D

Wired up the lights (what a PITA) put the spare back on and finished... Well nearly, never got around to putting the mudflaps back on. Job for later ;)

What's not so hot?
- The bracket on the back door is not painted and is easily seen, so that's a job for later.
- The wheel holder (the bit with the wheel studs in it) was not painted, so I painted this, otherwise there would be a big gold section showing through the centre of the wheel.
- There's no hole in this piece to allow you to put some type of lock on the lock the spare wheel up.
- The dust cap on the stub axel that supports the swing arm is not painted, again a job for later.

Other than this I'm very impressed with the bar.

Thanks mate. She lookes like a neat unit. When I took my Kaymar bar off (sold to Mudrunner), it weighed an absolute ton... I would estimate close to 100kg with one swingaway arm. Cars rear end went up heaps due to no more weight .

It's a pretty decent bar Rocket, 6mm plate and 3mm on the sides is a very strong bar IMO. Mine took a fairly big hit under the right side of the bar at the Brindies meetup and stood up to the task. Little dint but this would have ripped most of the cheaper ones off I reckon.

I like the self opening system as I keep making a nice dint in the door cause I forget to unlatch it..lol

Rocket55
6th July 2015, 08:20 PM
It could be 60 odd kgs, I only judged it with my two armies. It is pretty solid.

Is yours a Raslarr bar Nisshead? I would thourghly recommend the auto opening mechanism to anyone, for $400 bucks though, it is VERY expensive for what it is, but at the same time it's priceless to have when you use it. It was one of the major draw cards for me to this bar.

Yes mate, had it on for around 2 years and rate them highly. I know of some others who have their doubts with their recent purchase from them but myself am stoked...and yes I'm jealous of the auto opening system :)

If you've got a 16 odd mm hole just below and to the left of the bit the the spare wheel bolts to you could retro fit the auto opener easily.

Based on what I've seen with it and how it went together, I'd happily get more gear from them. Like you, I've read/heard a few others with some worrying stories, but at the end of the day, they answered their phone, answered my questions, returned emails promptly, the bar was ready within a couple of days from when they originally said, fit is pretty good, finish is very good, solid stub axels running car wheels bearings, so should be strong enough to hold a spare tyre. Overall quite rapped with it.

Yeah, I was lucky enough to talk and deal with Rob and had a pleasure dealing with the whole crew when I arrived. All as promised and super happy with the result. Highly recommend their work and the product.

I don't think I have that hole tho...not to worry I'm used to it now:)

Is the spare wheel carrier not centre to the right barn door? Or is that just the angle of the pic?

The bar is made for twin carriers... It can't be cantered to the door or you would not get a 2nd wheel on there.

This was the issue with early MCC bars. You could not have 2 x 33" wheels at the back, as the carriers were too far inwards... If that made sense.

Ok, a bit of an update to the wagon, been a bit slow of late.

First off I picked up a second hand roof rack and basket (Thanks Nic :D ). This will come in mighty handy when getting out and about with the extended family.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1100-1_zpsgq0a8ruc.jpg

This allowed me to get an awning, pretty happy with this one 2.5 x 3m ($198 delivered :D ) It's great.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1102-1_zpsq8tkmjdd.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1103-1_zps3gg5oghd.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1104-1_zps234vszcc.jpg

They only sit about 10mm higher than the front of the basket, might bend them down a bit yet.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1113-1_zpsbhx0umtz.jpg

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/IMG_1116-1_zpsyrmazrit.jpg

Hey Rocket,

Love the updates mate. Quick question, how did you get the centre console past the gear shift(s) and hand brake? I can't budge mine. I would take out both seats first (easy as) do the three screws (ashtray and two sides) but removing the knobs? Bloody hard as and no luck.

Rocket55
7th July 2015, 07:19 PM
It was a bit tricky. Give the handbrake a good application and get it as high as you can. Remove the 3 screws, ashtray light plug and the 2 plugs for the auto button and aerial height button. Unscrew the gear knob from the 4wd lever. The auto "T" bar stays on.

I can't remember the exact combination put pull the auto down to 1st or 2nd gear, lift the rear of the console up and past the handbrake lever, it was pretty close but mine came out this way. It's all in the way you hold your mouth I think.

Means rear springs out

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/39553BD2-C75D-46F8-9549-E977C07166F1_zpsw4fcapcn.jpg

Also took the opportunity to fix up the airline going to the top of my airbags as it was all twisted and kinked.

Removed the bump stops and cleaned up the spring hat. I was glad to see that it was all in good nick with no cracks or bends in it.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/8CAA14A9-BFE5-423A-8473-A6885DFC7716_zpscgkuh9gv.jpg

Cleaned them up, through some silastic in there to stop water and mud sitting between the chassis and the brace (as per the instructions) and bolted the braces in.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/D234720F-67D8-406A-8276-ADD1420D3C88_zpsjl6djise.jpg

The passenger side was a piece of cake. The drivers side was a pita with all the brake lines on top of the spring hat. At the same time I put some 2" blocks inside the spring under the airbag to allow for my suspension lift. Threw it all back together and you'd never know they were in there. :D

No, these are new mods. The chassis bracing is for towing the van. Once I put the rear bar on and got the spare off the rear door and stopped it rattling I could hear a heap of clunking and bang underneath, so it was time for some new bushes anyway, may as well get the arms to go with it. I'm also chasing a vibration in the drive line, so I'm hoping the adjustable uppers will fix that.

Was there much work involved in fitting those braces mate? Thinking of doing the same thing. I won't be towing anything. But with camping gear, fully loaded up she will weigh a bit. I understand yours are bolt on ones. Then there is the weld on ones.

Rocket55
3rd August 2015, 06:29 PM
They are pretty easy to put in really. Just accessing the top bolts on the drivers side is a bit difficult but really only added 5 mins to the process. Basically it's springs out, bolt them in and put the springs back in. If you're a bit handy and have a trolley Jack and stands, it's straight forward. A cordless rattle gun makes light work of the rest of it.

@ Mudski - you mentioned it to me the other day. Where to buy it??? Your usual paint places have it ?? The bloke whos doing my underbody uses it, but he also mentioned it is not UV stable and will discolor after a while - but will keep its strength and anti rust properties forever. He couldnt tell me where he gets it from as its bulk purchased for him.

That is also the stuff I used for everything. Used it on my last patrol to refurbish a rusty tow bar assembly. Came up almost brand new and stayed that for after many trips and bashings! Good stuff. This POR15 stuff is however, a much harder, thicker compound and dries and solidifies super quick...

Came up a treat Hodge. The only thing that annoys me with Rust Guard is the long drying time, 24hrs before it starts to get any real strength. You can hurry it along a bit with a heat gun but not much. You can get it touch dry with a heat gun, but you'll still leave finger prints in it if your not careful.

If this POR15 stuff is quick drying and tough then it sounds like a winner.

Yeah thats one of the best spray paints I have used too. Hodge found out how much POR15 is today. $115 or something for 1ltr. My advice though is to by 500ml. As you wont use it all and it does get a rock solid crust on top of about 3mm or so thick. Even with the lid shut good. Also, go to Bunnings and buy a bunch of their cheapest brushes. You will destroy one everytime you use this stuff.

Currently in 2 minds at the moment. I'm about to order a stack of go fast bits for my wagon that will see me fry standard clutches. I'm virtually set on a UFI clutch that will hold 800Nm and 300+ rwhp, not that I want to go this far. But I will be venturing into the lower area of where some have been having crank failure issues under certain conditions.

From what I've learnt and other have worked out is that the crank failures are due to harmonics as opposed to too much power. The increase in power simply lets the engine operate freely in the rev range that generates these harmonics around 3,800rpm give or take.

It appears as though there are a couple of things which influence this.

1) reducing the weight of the flywheel/clutch assembly seems to help.
2) flywheel material that helps absorb harmonics verses reflecting them back along the crank seems to help
3) upgrading the dampener on the front of the crank seems to help.

As a result you can get these wonderful sexy looking aluminium flywheels that are approx 6.5kg lighter than the standard cast item. They feature a bolt in wear plate. They're not cheap and would ordinarily fall into the "do it later" category, but I don't fancy pulling the gearbox out multiple times. I'm looking at it from an engine insurance perspective.

Thoughts?

Under the advise from my mechanic we are using the OEM flywheel and the Clutch Industries 4Terrain clutch. And we are aiming for 160rwkw, or there abouts. This mechanic is renowned for his work down here, and does a heap of comp trucks, drag and high performance street cars, so I can only assume he's on the money. Bloody hope he is, lol.

Just for reference Rod. As you may be putting money into something thats not really needed.

This flywheel is only 8.3Kg which is a massive saving on the standard flywheel but yeah they do cost a bit.

This quote is from Ben-e-boy on this exact flywheel...
"It will rev freely. It smooths out the vibrations from the odd firing pattern that a TD has. Also should halp a little bit to save the crank."

You will have less power losses through the drivetrain as well. It would probably not make an enormous difference on it's own but a combination of this with some other small gains will equal one huge gain.
Are you aiming for around 200kW?

yep i would be taking a big look at bennys thread, he has seriously done a lot of work and research into working his motor(and has done it) his truck is an absolute weapon

I'm undecided about it, just canvassing some opinions. I'll check out Bennys thread.

In the inexact science that this all is (no actually they're pretty good at hitting target numbers) I'm looking at around 230rwhp or 175rwkw.

Hmm.. The start of the thread has my 2010 CRD auto in it. About half way through I sold it and picked up a 4.2 manual. The surround with the two digital volt meters in it is from my CRD auto.

Couple of quick little jobs this afternoon. When whoever put the lift in they never installed the extended brake bias bracket

Next came a pretty cool little mod, well I think so anyway. Converting the auto hubs to free wheeling hubs. This allows me to select L4 without being in 4wd and hence winding up the transmission and drive line. Perfect for reversing trailers :D

Lock the hubs, Undo the 6 x 8mm cap screws and pull the hub off.

Place the hub in the vice and pri out the locking ring. I found it really tight, but if I tried at a different place around the ring it popped out really easy. So give it a go in a few places and you'll find it pops out with minimal effort.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/0DAAF709-B351-4A80-B933-7B357744B28A_zpsict21e6h.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/0DAAF709-B351-4A80-B933-7B357744B28A_zpsict21e6h.jpg.html)

This is what the hub looks like with the locking ring removed.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/8B52776F-5939-497C-82DF-36D74BC1ABFB_zpsjjmqcuw8.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/8B52776F-5939-497C-82DF-36D74BC1ABFB_zpsjjmqcuw8.jpg.html)

This is both the locking rings (one from each hub) one is upside down one isn't.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/F9504828-A359-416E-85AC-64416E9BA3A3_zps1qqrcgwe.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/F9504828-A359-416E-85AC-64416E9BA3A3_zps1qqrcgwe.jpg.html)

Now just put the hub back on and you're done. The whole process should take 10-15 minutes if that. :D

Rod, how is the Raslarr bar going so far? Any feedback on it. Saw one earlier today, and looked the goods. Definitely now considering one ...

Rocket55
13th August 2015, 08:42 PM
So far so good with it. I have noticed a creaking sound when I flex it up a little bit that I need to get to the bottom of. The reverse light seems to fluctuate in brightness while on. They do it simultaneously so I assume it's an earth issue as opposed to a bar issue. I need to run some power down the back for some other things so I'll put a relay in and pick up a solid positive and negative and see if that resolves it, I'm confident it will. All said and done I'm really happy with it and loving the auto opening mechanism for the swing away arm though.

Thanks for that mate. Good to hear some positive feedback. Might have a chat to them this weekends coming 4x4 show and see if there is any specials.

Also fitting was fairly straight forward ? Just wraps around and utilizes existing tow bar captive threads and holes/bolts ?

Rocket55
15th August 2015, 01:03 PM
Fitting was pretty easy to fit, just bolts in. All the instructions are included and are easy to follow. I did have to tidy up a weld on the top of my drivers side chassis rail to allow it to sit flat. This was also in the instructions as a possible action. Hardest part is lifting it on, you will need to find a friend to give you a hand for a couple of minutes, other than that it's a one person job.

Thanks again Rod. With my 3L i un-installed a kaymar rear bar, which more or less I imagine, will be the same bolt on system as this one.
Cheers !

Rocket55
15th August 2015, 01:23 PM
I imagine so. There's 8 bolts. 2 on each side at the back of each guard, and the 4 that hold on that hoop in the centre of the rear bar.

In doing this a found one of the uni's had a slight unevenness in its movement which probably explains the slight vibration I get at speed. When I do the engine work I'll sent the shaft away for a couple of new uni's. Also hoping that in the mean time by flipping the shaft and correcting the pinion angle some of the vibration goes away.

Tomorrow I'll tackle the front end.

Can't take it with you mate. As for the time, well there's 24 hours in a day. Day time with the family (or work), night time with the Patrol. Just makes it a bit harder as using a rattle gun at 11pm tends to upset people, don't know why...

Well replaced all the front arms today. Panhard, tie rod and drag link. The radius arms are later on. Was all pretty straight forward. Used the trolley jack to put a bit of pressure on the bottom of the ball joints then given a whack with a hammer and out they pop no problems. Measured the arms as best I could, but it will need a wheel alignment, although it drives pretty good so I must have gotten it pretty close.

Can't believe how much better it drives now, bumps are bumps and not crashes which reverberate back up through the body.

It won't be getting a dyno run before hand, I don't have time. It might get a dyno run when it's finished if I can find some time to get it done. ATM I'm being told I've got to take it to Melb or Bris to get it tuned as there's no one in Syd that they recommend. Also having trouble getting the flywheel, so the clutch won't be going in until that turns up, not pulling the gearbox out twice. As a result it might not run up fully on the dyno anyway without slipping. Needs to be operational by mid Nov for a trip.

I'm interested to see how those blade fuses / circuit breakers go. They were labelled as Narva products on the eBay site, but I don't see the word Narva written on them anywhere:confused:

If i recall correctly all Narva products come packaged in Narva labeled packaging.

Get ready for sone serious induction noise through the firewall when you get that cooler on. I was a bit taken back when i first drove mine with the noise, bug ysed to it now.

Snorkel is the probably the next thing to do on my car. Not for a while though. ..
Your ticking is from the pump? Mine started to do that within the first 400ks of my trip, it was that loud people in the street looking.

12mm compensated pump on mine. I recorded it with my phone and mms it to Mat. From what he could hear of it, he thought it wasnt right. I was told its the plunger in the advance mech hammering, as the noise disappears when i press the primer on the filter head.

Does that fit in, or does anything need to be moved? Im not entirely convinced on these air boxes yet. Considering i get 160rwkw from a factory air box and Safari snorkel. Then i think, what would it be witg a 4inch snorkel and a better air box. 165rwkw? Is it worth it?
What mine is lagging, as i spoke with Mat about this, is it has balls to the wall up to about 3500'ish rpm then it seems to run out of puff.
It would be good to have the balls to atleast 4000rpm i reckon. Mat said its the pump, most aren't built to supply enough fuel after that type of rev range, or something like that. Dunno, he spoke a lot when i met up with him.
Id love to spend a day with him and Bene, it would be a real eye opener....

I've been told/read 2 no 3 schools of thought with the lift pump. First up, the lift pump helps with throttle response and clears a flat spot around 2,500 rpm. Also been told that you won't notice any effect from a lift pump untill you start seeing big revs, approx 4,000rpm. anything under this you don't need one (this is also with a 12mm pump and not a stock pump). Seems to be consensus on 7psi but variations in required flow rate, some say heaps and some say bugger all as it's just there to support the IP at high revs. Also read a few reports of front seals in the IP failing after a lift pump has been installed which then fills the sump up with diesel. Also seen examples of the seal leaking without a lift pump. So who knows?

Apparently the airbox fits without needing to move anything and will fit with a second battery in the standard position under the bonnet. Hope they're right. If I have to move stuff then I should have got the Radius panel filter box instead as I think its a bit better setup, but requires the battery, header tank and vacuum canisters to be relocated.

Theory goes that the freer the intake is, the more responsive it is and torque it generates. time will tell I guess.

Cool. Maybe the pro's can add to the thoughts of the lift pump. As if it helps with the extra at high revs without any long term, or short, damage, then im in. Low cost for extra oomf!
As for the box, i was told while that the panel filter boxes do have more air flow, if they block or you somehow induce water into the air box, the filter simply folds under the suction of the motor and lets everything into the motor. Thats why a radius type filter is used. So i guess its kinda, take the good with the bad for both ways....

Yes the fatz box will fit. 4" from snorkel to turbo is ideal and you will have a noticeable gain in response.

A lift pump is advantageous as well. Just like a turbo, all though they still work, they dont really like to make their own air. So you free up the intake and it doesnt have to work as hard as such. The injector pump is the same. For the most part when on a test bench they are given fuel from a lift pump or only have a very short distance to draw the fuel. We have quite a way to draw fuel so the pump is working to keep fuel up as well as supply it to your engine. Fitting a low psi/ high volume pump makes the pumps life a little easier and inturn you will also notice a slight gain in response. It also makes life easier when doing a service.

Thanks for the info Mat. It all seems to make sense I guess. I was looking at a Walbro pump as everything I've read suggests they are silent and already have internal bypass if they fail. Read a number of reports of noisey and/or failed Carters. The 2 pumps I'm looking at are

FRD-11 Minimum Flow Rate: 76 liters per hour (20 gph)
Deadhead Pressure: 28 to 48 kPa (4.0 to 7.0 psi)
The PDF brochure gives Flow up to: 190 liters per hour (52 gph)

FRB-13 Minimum Flow Rate: 162 liters per hour (43 gph)
Deadhead Pressure: 42 to 56 kPa (6.0 to 8.0 psi)
The PDF brochure gives Flow up to: 225 liters per hour (60 gph)

I notice in their PDF brochure they give a completely different figure of flow rate. (which I assume is a maximum with no restriction).

My research suggested that Carter were the most used so it's logical (to me) that fault reports would be more common. It's perhaps indicative that the same person had 2 Carter failures in a short period whereas others have run them trouble-free for years.

They were mounted by Cummins as original equipment if I read correctly.

It might be of interest to some that someone actually mounted his lift pump inside the fuel tank so he can't hear anything. I certainly can't hear mine when the engine is running and it's just under my door.
Bypass is simple to add.

What a pain in the butt getting the elbow into the airbox inlet hole through the inner guards, but fed it through from the engine bay side. The intermeadiate tube will only go in via the big new hole you just cut. Far out it's tight, there's only millimeters of clearance, like 1 or 2 if that. these things were never designed to accomodate 4" inlets that's for sure. Sprayed all the silicon bits with silicon spray to lub them up and they just slip on real easy and make it easy to adjust, doesn't solve the lack of space problem but at least it goes together easy.

Drilled a couple of extra holes in the A pillar, whacked in a few rivnuts and the bracket was done, easy as. The Radius Fab snorkel covers all the holes on the guard but leaves to top hole on the A pillar exposed. I simply drilled it out to 9mm, threw a rivnut in there and whacked a 6mm stainless button head screw in there, looks neat as.

A few hours later, after many, many trial fits and adjustments and it's done

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/F136E3EC-05D7-42CF-B25C-2A3410F49050_zpsmbi8m07f.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/F136E3EC-05D7-42CF-B25C-2A3410F49050_zpsmbi8m07f.jpg.html)

Tomorrow I'll trial fit the airbox and intercooler and while I'm feeling confident, might chop the bonnet up and install the scoop.

Rocket55

Spent today fitting my new scoop. It's a great looking thing with a very high quality of finish.

First job, remove the under bonnet insulation and the original scoop, then sit the new cooler in place to mark out the location. Engine bay looks better already.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/9C9F5396-591B-4191-ABE4-F8A45F07F941_zpslxrdq7sy.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/9C9F5396-591B-4191-ABE4-F8A45F07F941_zpslxrdq7sy.jpg.html)

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/7192D362-AE42-4B0B-9725-C6C3A51E64A7_zpsihlwnkgq.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/7192D362-AE42-4B0B-9725-C6C3A51E64A7_zpsihlwnkgq.jpg.html)

Put the little foam blocks on the corners of the cooler and close the bonnet. They stick to the bonnet, drill through next to them and you now have your cooler location. Get your template and a helper and locate the template on the bonnet, measure many times.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/BF08A395-29AE-42E8-8B2D-41E7EF9BA508_zps0m4odedx.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/BF08A395-29AE-42E8-8B2D-41E7EF9BA508_zps0m4odedx.jpg.html)

Drill all the holes (27 of them) out to 8mm. First I drilled them at 3mm then removed the template, put down a heap of masking tape and then drilled them all to 8mm. Then trial fitted the scoop, all good. Get your air hacksaw out and chop a whopping huge hole in the middle of the bonnet. Clean up all the edges with a flapper wheel, debur and then give it a polish and your left with this. Seal the edges with some paint, I used Rust Guard and then sit the scoop on and see how it looks. This is as far as I got, I'll need to bolt it down later, much later.

Post edited, so as to not encourage other to bugger their bonnet...

NOTE: cut a rectangle that joins up the 4 holes you drilled through at the location of your foam blocks, don't follow the template like I did or you'll be up for another bonnet like I am

Haha I know what you mean, There's a couple of rigs on here and the other site that I get my inspiation and instructions from too, although mostly just search... Usually find what I'm after but generally also find about 3 other things that I should do as well.

Rocket55

Don't follow this install mate as I stuffed it up :1087::1087: I should have cut a nice rectangular hole joining up the drill holes from the foam blocks on the cooler. Instead I used these as a reference to ensure the scoop was centred over the cooler (front to back) then traced out the inner lip of the cooler template and cut that Bang HeadBang Head as such the foam on the cooler now won't touch or seal on the bonnet... I'll have to look at some infill panels or find another bonnet at a wreckers...

Are all the bonnets the same? If I just find a GU 4 onwards bonnet off anything I should be right, given that I will be cutting my own hole in it anyway. Any suggestions as to where I can find one?

Hodge
19th October 2015, 06:43 AM
Damn mate. That's no good. So, the way I understood it, you followed the paper template you had on top of the bonnet ???? But instead should have cut the inside-out where the foam stuck to the bonnet ?

Edit: I reckon wreckers are you best bet mate.

Rocket55
19th October 2015, 07:10 AM
Yep, that's exactly right. I really don't know what was going through my head, not much obviously! I'm so pissed with myself it's not funny, it's seriously just a hassle I could do without at the moment.

Could have been worse I guess, at least it's only a bonnet and relatively easily fixed, just a pain in the arse.

I'll give a few wreckers a call today and see what the go is. Depending on the cost and what colour they have, if I have to get it painted anyway, I can buy new bonnets for just under $350 without searching to hard.

19th October 2015, 07:56 AM
I fitted one of these scoops last week and nearly started drilling when I thought I had it centered but something did not seem right so a checked about 8 times until I checked the lines of the template and realised that the drill holes were way off... Im glad I checked so many times as in the past I would be in more of a hurry to get it done and would have missed this.

Bloody sucks mate big time and I do think they should be a little clearer in the instructions.

Rocket55
19th October 2015, 05:24 PM
Yep, my mistake. Although if the instructions had a dotted rectangle in the middle of the template saying "your cut out should be in this approximate location, see instructions" then the instructions actually mention this, that would be helpful.

I'm still dirty about it.... Good news though, at least my flywheel issues have been sorted.

I'll start on removing the injector pump after dinner.

It will require extra gaskets/ o-rings but removing the intake manifold and vac pump will make your life a lot easier for pump removal. Once you get the intake manifold you can leave the injector lines grouped together and just undo them at the injector and pump ends.

I'm not quite sure what to expect. I've heard everything from just take the pump off, to pulling the radiator out and just about everything else on the drivers side of the block..

The tcv and vac pump make it near impossible to get to the bottom nut on the injector pump unless you get creative with some bending and welding to make a custom 12mm spanner.

Radiator out will make it easier to access the ip gear as you will need to use a puller to get the gear off the shaft. Unless you can get a slim style puller. Make sure you align the timing marks prior to removal.

Its easier to remove the lines as they just get in the way when trying to pull the pump back off the studs and up and out.

Rocket55

I've read many times that there's 2 longer bolts that hold the ip timing cover on and you can use these to pull the ip timing gear off.

I got to remember how this bugger goes back together. Latest info is my gear is being air freighted out of Perth on Monday.

Having 2nd thought's about doing the injector pump by myself :confused::confused: just not feeling confident...

So in an act of true procrastination I installed my airbox and painted the panel on the back door that works the auto wheel carrier swing arm :o Also test fitted the pipework for the turbo, all good.

Is the outlet on that air box 4inch mate? I also assume it fits in nice where the oem filter is and the battery can stay where it is?

Yes mate, it's 4" in and out. I've had to move nothing to get it in there, the battery will slip into it's original spot no problems. Pipework essentially misses everything, well nothing that can't be fixed in 30 seconds or less.

Time for an update. Finally after 3 months my UFI gear has turned up, hoping it's worth the wait as it hasn't really been a smooth process getting to here, but anyway lets put that behind us and concentrate on going forward.

first up, new style 18g turbo

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/DFBB9065-4E26-4AA9-8859-0A855350CA8C_zpsmpbmi9sc.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/DFBB9065-4E26-4AA9-8859-0A855350CA8C_zpsmpbmi9sc.jpg.html)

Followed by a 250hp 12mm pump (nice clear pic through the plastic bag ....)

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/427C5C78-CD86-4F74-9BC1-50AF7447100C_zpsvuuisk96.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/427C5C78-CD86-4F74-9BC1-50AF7447100C_zpsvuuisk96.jpg.html)

Some new squirters

and a UFI clutch to hold it all together

Just waiting on the flywheel now which will look something like this

It was definitely a shame the turbo had some slight damage to it on the front lip

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/411C6346-8512-4DC3-B7C6-87518A12BB90_zpswgoy7vo2.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/411C6346-8512-4DC3-B7C6-87518A12BB90_zpswgoy7vo2.jpg.html)

Probably occured during transport and UFI could definitely package them better, especially after such the long wait. All impressive looking gear though. Anyway, quickly tidied up the front lip and went about installing the turbo.

Rocket55
4th November 2015, 06:51 PM
I had already removed the old POS turbo and the wagon has been sitting there eagerly awaiting this install. First up I noticed 2 unpluged coolant ports in the turbo, 1 on each side.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/B3F46CD2-0FFC-4BCA-AE55-0AEDA774D549_zpswe2lcbl4.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/B3F46CD2-0FFC-4BCA-AE55-0AEDA774D549_zpswe2lcbl4.jpg.html)

These are from the turbos previous life, are not required on the TD42Ti and are just left exactly like this.

Tme to lift it in and begin bolting it up, next problem, the outlet pipe hits the exhaust manifold and won't let the turbo bolt up.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/05E3BA0E-ED49-46E9-9406-E072487764E1_zpsccgynwjs.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/05E3BA0E-ED49-46E9-9406-E072487764E1_zpsccgynwjs.jpg.html)

So I loosen the centre clamp and rotate the front of the turbo so it clears the manifold, also allows the actuator to work freely and straight. Now to do the nuts up, what a PITA, the front two are easy, the back inside one is not too bad but the front inide one is there to test your patients.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/60009B4B-AC6E-4371-98EC-E28D70AD5013_zpst2wed4pv.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/60009B4B-AC6E-4371-98EC-E28D70AD5013_zpst2wed4pv.jpg.html)

Next up was to bolt up the exhaust, at first I didn't think it was going to line up, but it did, mostly. TIP. Put the bolts in the dump pipe first as it's difficult (impossible) to get the inside bolt in from the top once everything is in position.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/3FF74FD2-3E2E-4132-A0F1-933200310B69_zpsgg4dvk9f.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/3FF74FD2-3E2E-4132-A0F1-933200310B69_zpsgg4dvk9f.jpg.html)

Now for the oil line. I screwed the adaptor into the block first then added the line to the turbo, another PIA job. I ground down a 9/16 spanner to do it. Added some of Caltex's finest Dello 400 to the oil line then screwed the other end into the block. Added the EGT probe and job done.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/84C07A39-B90A-44D7-8616-DB7B2A4D8B70_zps96e4i6sq.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/84C07A39-B90A-44D7-8616-DB7B2A4D8B70_zps96e4i6sq.jpg.html)

Now it's time to start adding the intake pipework. Man these things were NOT designed for 4" intakes, anyway trial fitted it and it kinda fits. I will need to mod the heat shield as well.

It certainly pissed me off and I did expect better from them, the packaging was quite frankly under done. Just wrapped in a few layers of bubble wrap and chucked in a big cardboard box with the pump, which was similarly wrapped. But to be honest, it doesn't affect it's performance, you can't see it and I just don't have the time or patients waiting another couple of weeks to frieght it back and forthe to WA to get fixed. I need the car working by a certain date and that will be with or without some of this gear in. When i ordered I was told 3-4 weeks max, which gave me about 15 weeks contigency in time before I really needed the car and here I am in week 13 insrtalling this stuff during the night... Didn't notice anything untoward with the red actuator.

I would happily come for a drive up your way if I had the time. There's a guy just under an hour south of where I am that has a serious diesel injection business and is venturing into the world of Patrols. I know him through one of the other forums I'm on. He can change the pump for me pretty economically and when I told him what it is and has, he was happy to run it up on his dyno for nics, no doubt an opportuity to compare his in house developments, so could be a win win.

Ok, the Rocket mobile is running again.

Installed the heat shield over the exhaust mainifold, it need a tweek here and there to suit the new turbo and pipework. I wasn't completely happy with the way the intake pipe work was sitting, it was too close ie: touching the exhaust manifold, not good. After a few google searches I notoce most run the wiring loom under the intake pipe, I did this and all good, fits much better now.

Next step was to replace the injectors, set about getting them out. Those little rubber brackets are a royal PITA, then I managed to get the spill tube off in 1 piece, Big win for the novice.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/63350140-461D-4438-85CC-D678C1303FED_zpsumn8kpow.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/63350140-461D-4438-85CC-D678C1303FED_zpsumn8kpow.jpg.html)

Then the injectors out, No. 1 injector with the wire on it required a special tool, so off to Supercheap I go, pick up a 22mm deep socket and preceeded to chop it up, worked a treat.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/Rocket5555/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/5055C1C8-E3CA-4DCF-B563-9E854FB17C46_zpsrazcd1m3.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/Rocket5555/media/Build%20Pics%20Patrol/5055C1C8-E3CA-4DCF-B563-9E854FB17C46_zpsrazcd1m3.jpg.html)

Out with the old, then spent the best part of the next 45 minutes knealing on the radiator support panel, rocker cover and EGR valve trying to fish out those bloody injector washers, luckily none of them were stuck so it was just a bit fiddley. I was using a little screwdriver that I bent the tip over on. Thinking how the bloody hell am I going to get the new washers in the right way up, then it dawned on me. A set of external circlip pliers. Just hold the washers from the inside, put them in the hole and let them go, soo easy, got them all in in about 2 mins if that. Definite tip for getting the old ones out.

New injectors in.

Pump, flywheel and clutch to go, I'm hoping it makes a decent difference, i'd hate to do all this for a, meh, so so result.

It then came time to fire this thing up, I've had the battery on charge the other day, so it's good to go. Double checked and tripple checked under the bonnet for tools, along the sides of the guards, on top of the grill, bull bar, everywhere. Then went back to the tools and put them all in the tray, none missing, great so time to hit the key. Before doing so I removed the plug on the fuel cut solenoid and then proceeded to crank it over, gave it 4 hits of about 4-5 seconds each to pump some oil up into the turbo. Reconnected the fuel cut solenoid, hit the starter and it burst into life almost instantly, and idled away so soothly and quiet, it's never been so smooth and quiet since I've owned it. I was much relieved.

I let it idle for a few minutes and scoured over it with my trusty work lamp looking for leaks, flapping bits, anything that shouldn't be there and to my discust noticed an oil leak on the oil feed fitting to the turbo where it comes from the block. So shut it down and went about fixing it. Well this fitting is a piece of piss to get at when there's nothing there, but after the turbo, intake pipe, battery, etc. goes in you can see it, but touching it is a challenge. Anyway, about an hour later, the fitting was out and reinstalled with a new copper washer behind it, test again and all good.

Went for a small drive, stopped about 1 km up the road and rechecked everything, all good. Noticed the pyro gauge was not working, get home and check the power supply, no power. Closed the door and a job for tommorrow, as by now it ws 1:30 in the morning.

Next morning, sus out the pyro, pull it all out and find a wire labled "pyro power supply" taped up under the dash not connected to anything. Guess that was me last time doing half a job. Anyway, used the opportunity to run an ignition power source into the cab and into a 4 way fuse block, so now I have 4 pre-made ignition sources. Wired it all up, tested Ok and went for another spin. Eventually the pyro starts working, driving around on a light throttle I see 150 - 250 deg.

Pulled up at a mates house for a beer and a quick photo.

Given that I have not altered the fuel pump at all during this process, I wasn't expecting too much of a power increase. It does go better, a fair bit better, but it's not going to take your breath away. I expect it would be very different if you were to tune the pump to suit or better still when I put the new pump in it. Boost has increased from 12 to 16.5 psi, it revs so much freer and continues to rev past where it used to want to stop and do nothing, quite impressed to begin with. The induction noise is definitely there and with the windows down is loud, but with the windows up it's fine.

Here's a small vid of a gentle run through the gears 1st - 3rd on about 1/2 to 2/3 throttle towards the end of 3rd. Oh, it's uphill also.

Thanks BigFish, it's definitely been a headache coordinating it all, especially when I have a deadline where I need the car working, one way or another. The pump goes in on Thur/Fri this week, so hugely looking forward to the weekend.

Feeling sad tonight, went downstairs to the beer fridge and looked across the garage over the roof of my missus' car only to see an empty space where my big girl should be sitting..... But then I think about picking it up tomorrow with a new pump. :-)
