View Full Version : Installing WRX front mount intercooler with 3" pipe to GQ

I'm spamming your thread??? You bone head I ask a reasonable question unlike these other bone heads you call mates and you pick me out.... your going down Batty !!!!!!!!
What does diameter have to do with it... serious question!!!
Diameter has to do with volume and air speeds. The smaller the pipe the faster the air speed and less volume. Slow moving air wont heat back up as quick as fast moving air. Also when using Larger turbos that can spool as quick as they do now you can encounter surge so having more volume after the turbo can help to prevent this.
As for cooler size the more frontal area the better. Thickness plays a part as well. To thick and you can lose the cooling effect as the air travelling through has heated up prior to actually getting through the core. To thin and it can be restrictive.
At a mimimum I would use a cooler with 2.5" tanks with 2.5" piping. And 50-75mm thick.
Small coolers are not as efficient and after a period they will not be able to transfer air as effectively. To big and you obvioulsy have a larger volume to fill which can result in lag as the turbo has to pump enough air with enough volume to fill and pass through the cooler.

He told me to expect around 100-120 so I was happy when it came in at 120 haha.

Yeah bugger, I'm loosing a few pound of boost through the system. Getting them to do a leak test now.
If that checks out then its the overall big system and not enough fuel and turbo to supply what the engine wants.
Fitting boost comp on now, test for leaks and fingers crossed.

Boooooo!!!
Only reached 79...I'm saying 80...lol
There is actually a small leak not from the ic install but from the air filter to the turbo, easy fix. Bit scary after all those deep crossing I have done and that's a leak from pre turbo.
Small little leak from one of my clamps, ill change to a smaller clamp, may help me get 80...lol
Advice given...need bigger pump and turbo for my set up so time to start saving. I haven't driving it yet but advised ill definitely notice the difference.
Time to save some pennies!!!

Do you think? I'm somewhat disappointed but maybe I was expecting too much from the standard pump and turbo and this massive ic.

Disappointed why? You have driven it and was happy with the increase in performance so why does that number disappoint you?
Call it 80 haha, mine was 119 and I am calling it 120 lol.
So your pump is maxxed out now?

Yeah certainly your torque figures are pretty which is mainly I look at. Its only a little 10mm pump that is getting old now they dont last forever. Like I said 85-90 on yours would have been doing well.
One thing you need to remember with the diesel is your main goal should be torque rise and curve not hp.

I think what you will love more than anything is not having to be so aware of your EGTs as you know that on a serious hill it should not be over 300, and no more backing off on long hills either.

That is the main thing isn't it...
And I'm really happy with that to be honest. As benny said ill do a report in the egt log thread. Ill take it back up kinglake hill so we have a solid 3 setup comparison.

Ill help even more. Winnies patrol with bigger pump and turbo is only putting out 100 more nm than you but 40 more kw. So your doing pretty well.
Then you have bens extreme he is only making 60 more kw than winnie but making 300nm more.

Are you lost or just really dont know what you want?
If you can answer this it will make things easier. What do you want to achieve with upgrades?

To be honest I'm lost because I don't know what I want.
in the interim i want more power for towing the camper on long trips. I want more power for off road use and for general onroad driving and of course the wank factor of just having more power. Not going to lie on that last point.
Leah's commodore is coming close to its death. I have "long" term plans of getting Leah a nice auto 4wd for our family trips and my gq will eventually simply be a fun weekend car to dip into more challenging things.

You should be pretty happy with those numbers out of your little turbo mate. Small second hand turbo. It's doing pretty well. What is Boost set at now?
There is a very good Pump guy not far from you AB and he will put a 12mm plunger and rebuild your pump for under $2k. Just down the road.

Yeah he is a guy that sets up a lot of Competition stuff down this way. Low key but highly recommended to me. You can spend soooo much money on Pump mods, mild to wild. This guy was going to do my pup rebuild on the GUIV when I was chasing that fuel problem a year or so ago. Was weeks away from spending the money on a rebuild when I found the split fuel line causing my trouble. Lol

Smaller pipe would be a lot easier mate as you can run the hot side directly to the turbo running past the alternator and in general a lot easier.
Unless you wanted to run the pipes underneath the body then up your going to have to cut in unfortunately.
Thought I would throw this pic up before I bolt everything back on.
Took everything apart today, siliconed up everything just incase and re tightened all clamps. Pita but peace of mind when in deep water.
Stay tuned for my awesome new grille...lol...just drying in the sun!!!

I used to travel up and down Pine Ridge rd, amongst other back rd's and it would be a very good test for EGT's, but then there are plenty of good test hills/tracks in your area.

I personally dont like powder coating for bar work as once it is chipped away it is hard to tidy up.
I prefer paint then it just needs a dust up every now and then.
I only got the Bar primed as I was not sure how long until you would paint it so did not want it to rust.
The scrub bars I did not get primed as I knew I would be painting straight away.
I could bring the bar to the ARB night?? I am going to need your bar pretty soon.

Do you want to do that?
I just didn't know if you were just going to leave my bar as is and throw it on your car or if you were going to spruce it up and respray it. It's actually in pretty good nick, no dents or deep scratches, etc...

So was there a reason you picked a wrx cooler, or was it just what you had? I'm looking at buying one of these from justjap:
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2014/08/48.jpg
Mainly because the piping for my RD28 GQ will be so much easier then having to pipe it all the way back round. I plan to either mod my stock plenum to be like this:
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2014/08/49.jpg
Or use a GU RD28 plenum, and rotate the intake 90 degrees.

Purely because a friend was giving it away mate with a lot of piping that could work that's all. I won't lie though, it was a bit painful trying to get it all to work though being a full custom fit.

Hey mate ABs away for a few days but have a front mount on my GQ. Yeah removed vertical support just a couple of bolts top & bottom. Didnt notice any difference really maybe bonnet needs a firmer slam to shut but that might just be my catch. Took off the thermos for the aircon too, still works beutiful the only loss will be aircon might not get icy cool if just sitting there idling cos it's not getting airflow but hasn't been an issue at all with mine really. .

Cheers Rossco. Did you run your pipe work the same and did you rubber mount the intercooler ?

Mines a safari kit for a GQ pretty sure it is has rubber grommets, I'll check a bit later. Pipe work is a bit different it's all part of the safari kit, mines different inlet & outlet are on the same side just top & bottom. Yeah pretty happy with the front mount looks very discrete and seems to work well.
