Didn't you sell your beast of a GQ and buy a GU?

Are you sitting outside infront of your GQ, drinking beers and just staring at it? Sometimes I do that, it's parked just under my deck and when I sit outside it's in the perfect viewing position

You need help..... the only reason ab is sitting outside in the cold drinking beer is so he can smoke one ciggy after another.

Seriously, it doesn't even have a winch (or indicators for that matter!). You'd reckon you'd get a high mount or something for it. :)

I actually get a kick out of how amused Rossco was about the sprinkler system!

Amused. . . . Overwhelmingly impressed is what I recall.

Come on Cameron you don't need a winch down at the supermarket anymore, they've done up the car park nicely.

I think poor ABs thread might be getting off track again. . . .

I also made a rookie mistake. Doing the guard chop I couldn't put the plastic covers back on under the front wheel arches.

Driving through some of the watery holes in toolangi last weekend I then realised the breathers in the front right are just sitting there open for ingesting...lol

I'm going to put breathers on for piece of mind and then make up custom covers under the arch.

My door hinges are caked in mud too :(

When I put the front lokka in I was advised to do a 1000kms before using them to make sure everything sets in etc...

Then back to ROCKY TRACK for a comparison of what you had and what you will have

But I believe that ROSSCO inspired you to do this after watching him on the last trip

Nah good to go. If your doing gear sets & bearings they need running in but the main thing is you vary the speed. Change oil too after 1000k but apart from that ready for a good thrashing! !

MudRunnerTD

The air locker is air actuated. It's on or off. No bedding needed. Alway back off to engage, crash selecting is distructive and the main cause of failure. A little mechanical sympathy and years of service will come. Enjoy.

Yep and my winch would have been a lot faster too if I had wired it up properly...... WOOPS!! That job is for this weekend.
It took us about 5 hours to do the first 1.5km of that track!

Bloody hell, imagine how much quicker it would have been if we all had 4.6 ratios, twin lockers and a high mount... 2 hours max!
Would have got back to camp safely in the daylight, instead of driving those dangerous roads in the dark and the thick fog.

Well the alternator more than the winch. When I upgraded the alternator to 120a I did not think to upgrade the wiring to the battery, it has a 60A fuse in line. When winching under load it draws the full capacity from the alternator and popped the fuse last time, so I was winching at idle speed so not to pop the main fuse again.

Yeah they will really come into their own when towing hey... Towing the camper will be heaps easier too I was towing 1.5t which is the same as my camper.

Much easier to climb big hills with no lagging.

Even mr fancy pants in his 6.5 chev GU was impressed ;) (mark)

Ratio changes effect on the speedo will all depend on what you start with. If on 35s and you started with 3.9s then 4.3s will get it close.

AB just left. All fitted up, grill came up a winner. Main cables crimped and fitted. Ran out of time to wire up the switching side. Sat down and drew up a diagram and ran through everything for an Isolation switch, in cab controllers and Grill mounted switches for use by the Navi. All through the isolation switch though. AB is stoked.

He had an early Christmas today. I gave him a Rope too which has only done a few pulls but I broke and bush spliced it then replaced it. Will make a great rope with an hours work to splice properly.

Done and dusted.

A million thankyous for your help today.

This wasn't a rebuild of a highmount, it's a very pro complete restoration with some awesome upgrades purely from your knowledge of using them a million times and finding out problems with them.

I walked away with a huge smile and some extra goodies!!!

My beast is almost complete!!!

To finish of tomorrow...

Wire up isolator to winch in/out in cab and grille controllers and led light over drum.

New terminal for negative battery.

Boots on positive terminals.

Fix cb aerial

New bolts for winch mount/fairlead.

Hook and fix rope

I put Darren's chrome grille on my gq and it looked hot, I'll get one of them ;)

MudRunnerTD
12th July 2015, 07:16 PM
The light works a treat. I have had one on the back of the front number plate since Noah was a boy. It is just a Narva Truck marker light. It is powered by the winch isolator switch in the cab. When the isolator is turn on and the winch has power the light is always On. Turn the winch off and the light goes off.

The grill switches are water proof Momentary On switches mounted in the side of the left hand side headlight surround. The Navi can winch in and winch out when managing the spool without having to yell you instructions. You can also use these at home when responding your new rope and in a solo self recovery where you might have to be out of the vehicle. Power to these switches is on the same circuit as the LED Narva light above.

Looking good AB

If you don't have a lightbar handy hanging under your top rail of your bull bar then on the back of your number plate works great. That's where mine is..

See this post from my build thread showing the light on my plate

See on the back of the numberplate i have fitted a white LED marker light that is switched with the winch isolation switch in the dash and lights up the winch whenever power is connected to it. F*#king awesome at night for winching.

Any hose shop like Pertek will sell pneumatic hose fittings and air hose like that. That Brake Shaft was modified by Flamingfab and he welded a nut and made the end cap. I upgraded to a Gigglepin Brake shaft and gave AB my modified one. Lucky bloke.

Again the drum has been professionally modified with an inner roller Bearing installed to replace the nylon bush that Warn use. Makes a massive difference to the friction on the drum end. I bought it a couple of years ago and again gave it to AB as I have gone a Deltatek Air Freespool.

Haha Yes AB is a lucky bloke!! [emoji4] Might upgrade to a bearing end one day but not just yet, thought it might have been.
I took my shaft into an engineering shop near work but couldn't tap it because of the hardness. It does look neat with the little cap, might have a play around see what i can come up with. . .

It is a pretty basic mod mate, weld on a decent nut. Using a piece of water pipe cut the right length, weld an end plate on it. Make sure the pipe is cut the right length. ( long enough to hole the end on at the same depth that the circlip would normally, your replacing the circlip here)

Take out the bolt on the end of ABs brake shaft and it will be very clear to see. Put a couple of clamps on the brakes first though!!!!

Lol, nah I have a large Tap and Die kit and probably made in China, this is the second time I have come across a Tap that was the wrong size! Oh well. Fixed now. it's definitely 1/2" that's for sure ;)

Ground that bolt back too mate, just to be safe.

So I've jumped the gun and wired everything up bar the front switches on the grille for the high mount.

If I run a single cable (or just run two) from the isolator in the cab and then splice off to both switches (in and out) on the grille to both the in/out wires right near the solenoid surely that is ok?

If i have read it right then that should be fine...

Edit. Sorry just read your post again. Yes it will work but you already have a wire you can use at the front.

Take positive power from the LED light straight to those 2 switches in series. That power is isolated via the inside isolator switch. They just need a 12v supply they can send to the Solenoid for switching. Have another look at that drawing I did bud.

After putting Darren's chrome grille on my gq when we did the himount I thought I gotta have one of these!

It was criminal cutting up a brand new grille but it worked perfect! The fins are a lot thinner then oem so I managed to keep them all except where the high mount sits and there's now ample room between the IC now!!

Bling bling ;)

Looks micky mouse mate BUT the hook spoils it needs to go underneath for show Underneath is no good old mate.

The hook will be destroyed when hitting big climbs and or mud will get into the release lever and turn to poo when your trying to actually open the hook up.

If it's a static hook with no lever then all good but a release lever will clog up with crap and effectively not work when desperately needed.

Bit of an oh sh!t moment!

Checking the radiator levels for the dargo trip and it's all light poo brown which has freaked me out a bit!

Haven't checked coolant for a couple of a months.

Oil is all fine, perfect actually so just rust build up somewhere in the water galleys or radiator most likely?

Really!!!! Mate seriously I went to no less than 10 electrical wholesalers then Jaycar and a number of auto places. I even went to a car audio place. I did not come across a Single person that had ever seen what I was chasing and obviously No one stocked it. I spent hours googling and stumbled on a wholesaler in Hong Kong that had them. Once I identified what they called them I the back searched and came up blank.

Got the cooling system fully flushed today and found out the new high flow thermostat was not opening!

I have no idea how long that's been shut for but surely has only just happened?

Long story short, new coolant, new oem thermostat and water temps are perfect now!

Yep pretty excited about this to be honest Rossco/Winnie!

12mm pump is still in question so need to ring around with best build/prices.

Fatz airbox looks to be the winner too if the planets align.

Anyone mentions costs to Leah will be castrated on the spot ;)

I'll tell hell fake numbers, like 50 for the airbox, 80 for the pump and 120 for the turbo
