So we all piled up on the poor little scooter and off we choofed
A very cultural experience not for the feint of heart. I nearly fell through the floor of the house!! I've done home stays in the "outback" of Vietnam Thailand and Malaysia and this was the same style of accommodation . Made me remember how lucky we are. Our 3 yr old thought the little village was all cubby houses. No pics taken as I thought it would be rude. An entirely great evening though. Awesome tucker and hospitality. The Neighbour had some mates around doing fish fighting and was very proud of his fighting buffalo as well. He gets 1,000 thb for a win $30 roughly
The husband of the lady who invited us just lost his $14 per day job and is doing motorbike taxi work at night and last night 8hr shift bought home $3.50
Like I say how lucky we are

Thats very true mate and its the small things we take for granted like clean running water that you don't really think about untill you see how people in poverty really live, to say eye opening is an understatement when you think about what those people do to survive..

Just curious what is acceptable, can you offer them a gift when you leave of money or something else useful or would that be rude?

We normally give $100 to the massage girl here at the hotel. That's a bit over 30 massages. (Massage costs $10p/h hotel gets $7)
She's 71/2 mths pregnant at the moment so we will give her $300 when we leave. We tip her well after a massage as well. Just have to be a little bit sneaky with it so the hotel doesn't know.
Same with the ice cream lady we've known her for 10 years as well. We buy an ice cream from her everyday but don't take it, unless our little one wants it, but we pay her double. Going to her place tomorrow night for dinner. So to answer your Q no it's not offensive they're very grateful for any assistance they can get. They have to pay for school after primary school and most simply can't afford it so the kids are working at 12.

I've stayed with the H'mong about 10 years ago very humbling
We found a young lad with a nasty laceration to his shin. We only had medi pulv to treat it with. Our guide told us that a doctor was in the group 1/2 day behind us and would look at him. I still wonder how he went it was ulcerated quite badly when we came across him. I cleaned and bandaged was all I could do

Her home is a bit more solid than the last family we went to dinner with. Cement block (internal thickness only) and a tin roof. She looks after her daughters lad full time as a hell of a lot of the Thai do. And has a Down syndrome daughter to look after, no husband so she is the sole income earner. The gov gives her $257 pa assistance that's it. But she is happy and that's the important thing. Here they are. Not sure what variety they are. Hey grew them over in Launceston. Pretty hot and dry climate in summer. He dried them out by stringing them up with wire. I'm not a machine like you growler but I can eat jalapenos ok. These pictured are bloody hot to me though! Lol I reckon he nailed it with the way they are dried. They are flexy and chewy not dry and powdery.
EDIT: I'm talking about the ones on the right.
