Well next Saturday I am going to get myself one of those Gopro thingys, thanks to my 2 sons........well I will probably have to pay for it but it is the thought that counts I think

Been checking out prices, well there are some ripoff merchants out there, one camera place quoted me $649 for an Outdoor Pack.
I kept looking and found the same plus more attachments included for $445.......It pays to look around.

Great gadget especially when replaying a tough track.
You may want to whip up a bracket so you can get the front wheels doing their thing,
reckon that would be interesting veiwing.

Get it off the actual go pro website. They are selling the Hero 3 Black Edition for $400.

Have a look at just the silver edition as the black is for pro level. Yes its the best, but you will never use the high end of the scale in recording and the silver still does really well. From memory the Silver is $300 from go pro.

"Twice" the frame rate from silver to black, pretty handy benefit on a action camera, plus you get a remote with the black, i have a pretty new Silver edition (i bought just before the black came out),and i still think its worth spending more to upgrade to the Black edition when i can afford it.

Yes the gopro web site sells them for $400, i went though all this not long ago, go ahead and click on the cart and it will make you think postage is $10, but....when you get right to the end, the postage is actually more like $100.

IMO,they are also great at selling stuff they dont have, and releasing software that does not work properly, they are still a great camera tho.

BTW, You can get good china batteries off ebay now, i bought 4 batteries + two chargers ,and they are every bit as good as the factory battery.

Ah yes i forgot about shipping. Theres always a catch. Its an american site but they ship to aus. The double frame rate will be good, but thats only if you have something that will actually play it. Apparently the remote is crap, and the smart phone app works better, both silver and black are wifi compatible.

The higher frame rate is needed just so the camera can film things that move fast smoothly, its not hard for anything to play back, as you can convert it to what format you want anyway.

Let me explain, we were filming 1/5th scale off rd RC cars, we used fairly decent cameras ($7G each) (widescreen) for most of it, but wanted some "on car" footage.

So.... bring out the gopro, now the gopro silver can do 25 frames per second in "widescreen", but this created jerky footage, because the RC cars move fast and bounce around, so to get up to 30fps we had to go to 4:3 (square), this fixed the jerking pretty good, but left us with 4:3 footage for a widescreen production.

Editing the 4:3 back to widescreen on the PC, basically chops off the top and bottom of the square footage, and zooms in to now give you fake "widescreen", as you can imagine, the quality of the footage at this stage, is well, less than desireable.

Now, if we had a gopro black, we could have filmed up to 60fps if we want, but still retained "widescreen" at our 30fps, so no cropping/editing needed, so it would be almost like having twice the quality footage from the same camera.

Widescreen is the standard these days, and everyone watches a widescreen tv, so with what i said above, the black is the only gopro that does not fall short for "action" or fast stuff

I have not used the remote that comes with the black, but i can tell you many people (including myself and friends) have reported issues with the iphail app, as i found out, it is great when it works, but when you need it most.........:(

We imported over a dozen hero3 blacks and a tub load of accessories from the US back in December as nothing was available in Australia. They went like hot cakes on gumtree. Still selling off the last of the accessories!

I just bought my lad a silver from Kogan, cost $280 inc postage. He's really happy using the remote software on both his iPod Touch and Galaxy S2.

Beware re kogan. Read on another forum tonight that they don't have a serial number and software updates don't work? Might just have been a bad batch dunno

Haven't tried any updates yet but it's a genuine GoPro. Couldn't bring myself to pay the ridiculous prices that our local stores were (not) selling them for.
I'm all for local trade and don't expect the 'Bricks & Mortar' retailers to match the price but they should get a lot closer than what they're prepared to.
