Im trying to work out what front diff I have on my Mq so I can order some wheel bearings. I have read there are two types and have had a good look at the case on my front diff but cannot find any numbers.
How do I work out what diff I have? Its a 1983 Mq 4 speed manual if that helps and the front wheels have a lock/unlock turn switch for the 4x4 lock..... Im new to 4x4 and Patrols so any help would be great
Cheers

I believe its called a c200 diff. which is standard on the rear of some pathfinders.

Cheers. Thanks for that. I searched high and low for numbers like you would find on a rear diff of a rwd but to no avail. The info I had found was its either a c200, h260 or a h233b. I think I found the H223b was post 8/83 and seeing mine is a 7/83 I think your right. Thanks for the info its been a big help.
Are the front wheel bearings really torqued to 167 to 196 nm or have I read my manual incorrectly? Hell, the Ef I have's wheel bearings are set to about 3 or 5 nm, hence why I ask.

Not certain of the torque settings. The rear on them is either h260 or h233, depending on whether its a ute or otherwise. Mine was an 87 ute. I had the massive 260 at the back.

Ive got to look at the rear diff on mine. It looks like its been replaced, the previous owner had intended on dropping a 5 speed over the 4 and I think he had done the diff in anticipation. I looks reco'ed and I noticed when I was driving it home she screams at 110, almost like it needs a 5th gear. She pulls hard off the line too so its either a high diff ratio for a 4 or its a 5 speed diff.
Is there any catch with bearing kits for these? Ebay has them for the best price of $85 for both sides yet supercheap has the same brand for $32.95 a side. I found I need a 54mm socket for the bearing bolt but do the kits come with the rear hub seal and lock seal or do I have to buy them separately? Ive done enough wheel bearings on car's to know what I am doing but 4x4 is new to me so seeing its something Ive not done before I want to get my head around it. Ive got a manual I downloaded but its not the simplistic gregorys so I just want to know what Im up for.
Cheers for all your help to mate

When I done my MK front bearsing I got a kit off bursons, ( you dont have to pre pay and they get the bits in quickly - in Melton)

My bearing lock nut set up had been changed to gq so I dont much about the preloading of the bearing. From what I have read the high tauque is ues to set the bearing, you then back it off.

Yeah our local Bursons ( Penrith) have pissed me off. Every time I have asked for a price they have given me premium prices and then when I go down they have me wait for ages while I watch all the workers talking to each other behind the counter. Not to mention last time I called them they told me they would be open till 4pm and after doing the half hour trip down to them they actually closed 2 hours earlier.
Ill have to read again about the bearings in the manual. Ive done my fair share of car front bearings ranging from an old Lj I had to an E series Falcon but never a 4x4. Its a little different and because of that I feel like a novice and getting over worried. I like to be organized and have all I need when I do a job so I can just get it done in one hit.
