View Full Version : suspension shutter on my Maverick

As the title suggests I get a bit of shutter when going over bumps in the road. I feel it through the car and the steering so I'm going to start with some bushes and steering damper.
I think my shockies are stuffed so will pull them out to have a look and adjust (konis)
Need to replace suspension but can't afford what I want ATM.
I'm going to replace the steering damper and bushes
Penhard bushed
Radius arm bushes
stabiliser rubbers
Can the above be replaced easily or do they need a press to get in/out.
What else should I do while I'm at it???
Anything else that could be causing this shattering/vibration

Maybe give the bolts a check over.. pull each one out, one at a time. Grease and replace if in good condition.. remember to torque up.
It may save you a lot of work replacing bushes and buy some time, saving for the good gear.
Most bushes are pressed in BTW. But grab a socket and a bottle jack under the tow bar and whalla.. a press... :p

if it gets out of order over bumps I would be looking at swivel hub bearings first. First I would take 1 shim out and pre load the bearing abit and see if that makes a difference... 15min job
Cheers
EDIT sorry I thought wobbles not shutter didnt read properly

Panhard or radius arm bushes will cause those symptoms too

Just went to confirm it wasn't wobbling and its not.
Its just like a car with no shocks, you feel every bump, crack, hole, stone... It shatters through the car and a bit in the steering wheel.
I'll check the bearings while I'm at it.

Sounds like the symptoms of a condition commonly referred to as "GU butt" or "SAS, Soft Arse Syndrome". This terrible affliction that affects 4 in 5 GU drivers is caused primarily by the over use of the soft GU patrol. Upon changing back to a real mans GQ the lower gluteous maximus region suffers periods of discomfort and a heightened sensitivity which results in a lowered immunity to common road bumps. The only known cure is to remove all soft GUs from the patients life and start a routine of GQ driving.

Jump underneath and get a screw driver to lever each and every bush to see if there is play in any of them.
Likewise to see if bolts / housing is worn
Get someone to wobble the steering and check ball joints, panhard etc.
I got a fair bit of shudder when I was running a pressure that I decided was to high in my tyres, although this may be completely unrelated.
Check wheel bearings and swivel pins.
You might have a little play in a few areas

OK, did some work on it yesterday.
Pulled out the hubs and regreased the bearings. The drag link ends are stuffed, penhard rod bushes need replacing, tie-rod ends will need replacing, sway bar bushs as well.
There was no play in the wheels at all so must be all good
Whats the go with the drag link, only the ends are shot but its all one piece and the whole thing needs replacing...what a stupid design.
I'll leave the radius arm bushes till last as they might not need replacing yet and its a prick of a job.
Steering damper will be replaced as well
BTW. I experimented with tyre pressures and no matter what pressure I have the same symptom.
