Tonight I finished installing the Fatz Fabrication air box. What a mammoth job! Took me a weekend and about 4 days after work, but I haven't got a shed or carport so I was fairly controlled by the weather.
Huge thanks to @AB, he had already installed his so knew how to get around every hurdle and he saved me a lot of headaches!
I really can't believe what a big difference it has made! I gained 6 psi without touching the boost controller, the car used to hesitate a bit at higher revs but will now happily rev to 4k rpm.

Just put in a new HD adjustable rear panhard after snapping my standard one last weekend.
And I have ordered the 12mm fuel pump and injectors! Should be right to go for September when I get back from Bali!
I'm gonna get an inline electric pump to put in at the same time as the mechanical pump install.

They are the same flow but the the 4601 runs at a slightly higher pressure. I commented to winnie here or in another about a 4601 as it runs at a pressure close to that of what the pump builder sets his pumps up at.

How you wire is completely up to you but if its on ignition then it makes priming the filter a breeze at service time. You could use a pressure switch also using oil pressure so it doesnt operate unless the engine is running. I still would run this through a switch so you can override it at service time.

Best to mount them as close to the tank as practical.

nissannewby
23rd September 2016, 08:21 PM
Dam. Hopefully you haven't damaged anything else like pistons

This wont happen. Winnies pump is worn so it struggles to build pressure hence the hesitation or missing on acceleration.

I am having an issue with vacuum though which was present before I started this job. I have no vacuum assistance in the brakes or clutch.
There is vacuum to both though but I'm not sure if it's enough? I wouldn't imagine both boosters going faulty at the exact same time.

Think I found my vacuum problem. It's a strange one though. If I block the hose going to the clutch booster then I have brakes working again. If I block the hose going to the brake booster I still have no clutch.
The 1 way valve on the brake line works as It should.
I pulled the clutch booster off and this is what I found.

Maybe some v blocks and measure at different points to see. I machined a length of 4140 rod up that passed through the front centre and into the other side. It was bent to start with and the shaft would not go through. A smll amount of bend is probably ok but if its to much you will destroy axle seals.

Anything different that you can recall leading up to this? Oil usage, coolant usage, hard starting, overheating etc.

Very minor rear main seal leak.
Other than that it has never ran better.

Hmm. Could have been a possible gasket/head issue and has ingested some water causing a hydraulic situation.

Matt, how much water would you need at say 2000rpm to give a hydraulic lock up? This would be more than a weeping leak wouldn't it?

Not much. Probably not even a tablespoon. What can happen is you can have a blown gasket or cracked head, while running this may not be a problem. Its when the vehicle is stopped and it can leak some coolant into the bore. Then when you start it next time it can bend the rod. There are many other variables and consideratios to take into account. But not returning coolant and having a pressurised system (coolant being pushed out of expansion tank.) Can be a sign of conbustion pressure entering the cooling system.

Fark winnie, shattered mate that really sux, not what you really need at all. On the plus side pretty cool shed she's sitting in lol. Yell out if need a hand more than happy to swing a spanner or two, getting pretty down pat pulling these things in & out lol . .

Would you feel any vibration from a bent rod - assuming it can still cycle about the rotation? If its bent its going to sit in a different part of the cylinder as well I guess. I don't know much about this sort of stuff.

Yea fark Chris not a pleasant finish.
Unfortunately I think that rad leak may have been a good contribution.
As Matt mentioned it's not while running that's the issue..
Hopefully that pump isn't impacted

Yep. The bent rod can cause the bore to wear unevenly and the bottom rings to pull down further than usual and eventually fail.

As I said there are many variables. You could have got 5km up the road or 5000km. It could have been the tiny amount but you had it parked up a while to do your diffs. So a slow leak could have been enough that once you started it you bent it a little. Once its bent it will keep bending. Throw some load on it and it bends fsr enough to grab the the bore and snap. Then just breaks shit.

I am just going to plug along for an hour or so after work each day and hopefully it will be ready to pull out this weekend. Then I will start stripping it down and cleaning the parts we are going to reuse.

Yay nice, kinda sad but will be flying better than ever in no time. .

So was doing some thinking bout this the other day and in theory if this happened in the middle of nowhere and you had to MacGyver yourself home would it be possible? (Not that you ever want this to happen of course lol. . .)

Always thoughts were take off sump and remove snapped conrod off crank and leave piston and other broken bits up in bore sitting there most likely safely jammed. Seal up block and sump if required with whatever on hand, silicone plastic packaging etc. Disconnect valve train from affected cylinder by removing pushrods (?), then in theory wouldn't be putting boost into crankcase or pushing broken bits further down. Isolate injector to avoid filling sump oil with diesel, just direct into bottle or something.
Guess issues I thought of were would the engine be so out of balance it would self destruct and without bearing in crank journal would oil pressure be insufficient guess you could duct tape bearing in or block oil passage possibly? Any other potential issues haven't thought of?

Anyways just a few things ticking through my head the other day definitely don't want to be in this position but always like to get out under own steam wherever possible if that's what it gets to. .

Not sure how Rossco but an old mate up FNQ recently limped a similar home to Cairns some 500+km. Must have dropped ‘all’ the bits into the sump and without a block busted hole too I would imagine. Isolating its injector is interesting I agree, must have diluted some serious sump oil home and or Hansel & Gretel trailed a screwdriver hole home we hope not!

I worked with a Scottish guy many years ago and he told me the story of how he discovered his old morris had dropped the oil ring out of one of the pot and was belching oil smoke. He was getting married and the newly weds were to embark on some epic trip around europe in ths car, so ON THE DAY BEFORE THE WEDDING, he decided to pull the motor out and remove the piston and conrod from the cyclinder. He worked thru the day and early evening, started it up and it shook the crap out of everything and then almost instantly he realised the out of balance issue - so he stripped everything back out, replaced the old piston and rings, put it all back to together and left the spark plug off the cylinder, finished the job at 5am, wedding at midday, fell asleep at the reception at the bridal table. Car ran with reduced power and they completed the trip then he stripped it down upon his return and did the job properly.

I am just waiting on a quote from Patrolapart for the engine and all the bits and pieces, gaskets etc that I will need and then I can put the order in. Hopefully have it secured by the end of the week and then we can organise to throw it in hopefully some time in November.

Thats awesome mate, freshest TD42T in Moe :)

Time to strip that engine mate and slowly plug away in the shed ensuring all gaskets and glue are off the bolt ons and clean them all up.

That was the most time consuming thing for me but do it once, take your time and get them all mint!

Same when you get your new block, clean everything up on the block ready to bolt straight up.

Check out the manual to see the different torque settings and make sure your torque wrench can work in those ranges, etc too.

Are you going to get a Vac pump or blank it off?
