I to used to drive a manual as well, now driving an auto, You don't drive them you just sit in them and steer, all decisions are made for you.
Off road especially going up its great not so good going down, but there are ways around it to improve it,
great on sand to I'm lead to believe as well. In the years to come all 4x4s will be auto IMO

What 3D said. Manuals better downhill. Autos better everywhere else (including sand). Plus, you get "poor mans" lockers if you drive through the brakes. Go the auto!

Hi mate - I think this is one of those Holden/Ford arguments! I drive a manual because I like being in "control" - but to be fair that is probably psychological! Pros and cons as I see it of an auto:
Pros:
1. Easier to drive
2. Better on sand because you don't have to worry about dropping revs
3. Better uphill
4. Better for constant speed changing driving (don't need to change gears all the time)
CONS:
1. Not as much control downhill
2. Poorer fuel economy
3. Can't roll start it
Just my 2 cents worth.

So according to your calculations the auto is better to drive as a car and a 4wd.

YEAH gotta agree with Mego it really takes the {you} out of controlling the 4x4 away from it, I only got an auto for Medical reasons,
really miss the manual though, driving, listening to the engine to change gears etc It was a sweet sounding 350 chev powered 4x4

I love manuals, i say you cant beat them BUT theres some thing about sitting in stop start traffic for 2 hrs that makes you want an auto. My trol is the second auto i've owned out of many cars, but i got an auto because of towing. Its easier and any one can drive it.

Autos are better on sand, all the bits about gearing and revs are true - right up until the moment that you get stuck. Then it's stuck.
Manuals can often drive out of the same stuck that is burying an auto. It's a clutch thing :)

4 IS greater than 3! But you can add to the auto tally with - no more stall recovery!

Depends on driving style. A recent local club sand trip had us all (17) deliberately bog ourselves. Hardest to bog ... sorry everyone ... Prado auto! 2nd ... Patrol auto. Easiest ... all manuals. We found the best way to bog an auto is to first, floor it in 2wd and dig the rear in. Then 4wh and dig the front in. Manuals just had to abuse the clutch. yeah, it is a clutch thing.
hehe ... 17 4bys bogged in the sand and a cheering audience of campers. good times.
