TB4.2 Work
Hey everyone,
I am in the process of purchasing a 1991 Ford Maverick manual carby dual fuel. This 4WD has apparently only done long road trips across Australia; barely any 4WD work and has done 526,000kms. I am asking today what is the first thing i should do to the motor (Apart from changing all oils etc) ? I am pretty handy with a spanner so i am not afraid of a bit of engine work. Although i don't want to pour too much money into the engine as it will soon be converted into a TD4.2. Any responses will be much appreciated, thanks

Well, if you are converting to a TD 'soon' and the TB is running OK... then don't touch anything.
Worlds best advice for any mechanical or electronic device... 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'
Dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish.

Thanks for the quick response !
Well when i say soon I'm thinking over the 6-10 month period if that changes anything ?
Then again very true advice, although i have heard of gas making trouble inside the heads of the TB's ? do you believe any issues can arise from this engine doing over 500,000 kms ?

My GQ TB42EFI was still going gangbusters after 600,000.
Dunno if yours has it but I was running upper cyclinder lube injection (Valve saver).
I have heard of the odd issue with the Carby/LPG systems that you don't get with the EFI/LPG but, again, if it is going OK just leave it alone and run a bit of petrol thru after every tank of LPG.
Weak spark can also cause hassles.
If it hasn't already and you do get probs then an extended rotor button, platinum plugs (good idea on EFI or Carby) and an aftermarket Ignition and boosted HV Coil will solve those probs

Oh true ? (Hahah haven't seen that term in a while);
yeah i will make sure i investigate the aftermarket parts !
I have seen an ignition system by the name of Pertonix being thrown around in other forums, primarily aimed at the older TB4.2's. Have you heard about this system at all or know much about it ?

Pertronix would easily be the most popular ignition upgrade for the dual fuel Carby Patrols.
Mine was EFI so I had hi-performance spiral leads, platinum plugs and extended rotor button IIRC.
It went perfectly well with those bits of gear.
For the Carby versions I believe the Pertronix coils etc make a difference.
I never had one so hopefully one of the Carby owners on here will spot this thread and post up their views
If not maybe start a new thread

Patrol God
It may have had a new head fitted, valve recession occurs around 300K without an upper cylinder Lubricant. {approx}
Do you have service history, at all, and how long has the gas been fitted??
Change the oils , get all your TD bits together and go for it.
04 ST 3lt auto, not enough Mods to keep me happy, but getting there

Alright thanks Theeviltwin ! & Threedogs
Owner claims there has been regular servicing of engine oils etc. Not quite sure how long the gas has been fitted but if i had to take a stab in the dark i would say its whole life.
I am hoping i can get all the TD bits together asap ! Does anyone know what kind of fuel economy the TB carby's get on average /100km ? i have heard mixed opinions; although i believe it comes down to general maintenance and not limiter bashing the thing !
