    Hmm.
Something maybe be not right with ye'old TD42. I changed the oil before i did a 4500k run up north and back. water temps as mentioned were fine, only because i wasn't towing and the ambient temps were fairly low. But i did another oil change recently and its used maybe a litre of oil in that time which it has done this for quite a few years now. I have noticed it seems to be a bit low on power also, she won't produce power in the higher rev range like its always has done.

Over the last 4 years or so i have tired numerous brands as i know that some engines react differently to different oils. Currently using Penrite HPR Diesel 15/50. Which seems to be the best pick out of the bunch for this engine.

I have booked it in for a compression test and also to adjust the tappets as its never been done since building the engine 10 years ago, circa 230thousand k. Im hoping the tappets are out of adjustment and this is why she get hot quick and low on power, but the oil consumption is concerning. It does seem to breath a bit heavy also for my liking.

I do hope its not the engine, if it tests ok. I think i remove the injector pump and have that tested. I might even do this anyway.

Definitely do the tappets, I noticed a difference when I did me, I know that our engines are completely different.

Could oil consumption be that the motor is well run in and it's just using a little more than when it was new. As all motors do..

And since you mentioned she's breathing hard, wouldn't hurt to check the air filter and blow some compressed air to it.

230k on the engine ?! Far out. Surely not. I remember when we picked your car up the day it was ready 10 years ago. Almost exactly. Your engine builds done more Ks than my whole car.
Can't speak or suggest why low power mate. But I've discussed that oil with you I think. I gave Penrite 15-50 a go, and its the only oil my motor seemed to "Use". And the catch can filled up faster after each service.

It’s been on the rollers a few times. But not in the last 4 years’ish.

I think I'll have to get this done again, depending on the outcome of the compression test etc.

Air filter is done at every oil change regardless of condition.

    I can’t remember exactly but it’s definitely over 200k.
Low power as it hasn’t got what it used too. But that just could be me…
I do know for a fact that no motor is the same and will react differently to different oils. Probably 20 years ago I did some sort of course/ training with Castrol and their experts and we went through all the whys and hows motors react differently. And why you need at least 3 oil changes to get best results before making a decision on what oil. Not that I can remember most of it now. But the 15/50 seems to be the best for mine. I just make sure the engine has warmed a little before driving off into the sunset.

Tappets adjusted and compression test came up all good so happy with that. Might be time to maybe look at a dyno tune and see if the pump needs a freshen up.
