I had a look at the first 2 pages, great info for beginners.
One very important thing with automotive relays is always mount them vertical, otherwise they may not switch correctly.
On my Hilux the relay had been mounted (shoved in) horizontally under the fuse box cover & the spotties would come on but would not turn off until you hit a bump.

Found this video to be a fairly reasonable explanation of how a relay works, good for those who prefer to watch than read.
