The key gave up a good bit before the shear pin let go. No damage on the bronze gear keyway though...



Every. Single. Nut. and. Bolt. has been a pain in the ass. But the old thing "it didn't get stuck in a day... don't expect to get it loose in a day"
I've heated. I've beated. Right now got the takeoff, PTO shaft and drum in a vat of oil, boiling it daily(ish)
I'll throw some more hours at it this weekend.

Should be fine after its cleaned up. The amount of work it will do is probably limited over its life, so polish off the high spots with a sander, replace or service the brg and good to go. If its going to be rolling a lot, might be worth the replacement but doubt it.

After a dip in the electrolysis tank, I've taken to the worm drive with a file. It's still rather holy-er than I'd like but the next thing is to fill the pits with weld, which is almost at the top of my "fuck that" list.

Bearings and seals will all be replaced. I also have plans to upgrade the fairlead rollers to some kind of ballbearing setup.

Dont attempt to fill the voids by welding, they will be such a small area of load anyway, and you would distort the tooth form and the gearset will wear out quicker. If you are really anal about it, fill the holes with something like devcon or liquid metal and sand the surface to level, but I would not bother.

Well, I could spray weld it without distortion, and I have hand filed industrial gearboxes missing teeth etc... but you're probably right and best left well alone.
Is there a reference you know of to tell me settings for preload, mesh, end float etc?

No I dont know. I would simply reasseble with the component as removed. Its a fairly agricultural drive and worm drives are generally quite forgiving.

Unfortunately no. Parts still soaking in the tank. I've been playing lego with the trucks. 3 engines out, two back in. New clutches etc.

There's a power take off which is 6 or 8 bolts on the side of the transfer case... shaft goes forward to the worm drive/drum. Cable hooks around back of box to selector lever. Will take some photos when i do finally get to it. I'm planning on retiring again so should have more time for myself

I know exactly what you mean! Every weekend I end up doing something on a different car and the one that requires most of the attention/assembly gets no love...
