Glow Plugs ZD30 Common Rail
Trying to work out which glow plugs I need for my 2008 ZD30 Common Rail. I haven't pulled the original ones out yet. However I know that the original Nissan ones (11065MA70A) are NKY (NGK) Y538J. From my searching it looks like these are metal tip, is this correct?
If so, I wouldn't need a timer then.

I can't see you needing a timer if the vehicle never came out with one. Have you ran a DMM on your current setup to see how long they are actually on for after startup? Even if it was two or five minutes I wouldn't be concerned. Pot temps on a diesel after a morning startup would be no where near operating and running temps.
Each to their own though.
Pretty sure all NGK glow plugs are metal tipped though.

Just there is alot of talk about adding an aftermarket timer to your vehicle after installing metal tip glow plugs

The timer thing was for the ceramic tipped plugs. Metal tipped plugs are supposedly more resistant to failure. Apparently.

Your CRD is a totally different beast to the Di which seems to glow for an incredibly long time.
I have a later model crd and have tested the glow time. It seems to be directly related to engine temp. As soon as operating temp reaches approx 30⁰C it stops glowing. This means it doesnt even glow if starting when already warm. This is completely different to the Di which glows every start regardless of engine temp.
So I havent bothered with a timer because it simply doesnt need it.
Hope that helps
