Diesel engine fails not once not twice but yep three times!
Found this interesting read on the Nissan Patrol club SA web site. Pages 20 and 21 of their club magazine.

Just read on "Patrol 4x4" forum that Nissan changed to Air Cooled Turbo's in July of 2002.
gotta love Google

also from the same web site, it seems all the mods were done on the 2002 series change... so i'd be looking for one that has a manufacture date after 07/2002

I am he, fear me
Hmmmm... to quote the article
Engine one repairs after 185,000 Kilometres... "new Pistons, MAF" et al and while being tuned on the Dyno... IE zero K's... Kaboom "a hole burnt in Piston #4".
OK, anyone want to explain to me how a "brand new 'stronger than factory' Piston" gets a hole burnt in it in, what, 15 minutes ? ...and... what do the mechanics do?... new Pistons, new MAF et al and send them on their way? A double catastrophic failure and no Turbo issues which MUST have been visible on the Dyno.
I see it as more likely an undiagnosed Turbo failure with catastrophic failure at 185,000 K's followed by total balls up of the repair in Cairns.
At least the poor buggers have it going again now. Would love to know who did the fix in Adelaide and exactly what they found
