He was probably starting to float at the rear. The fuel tanks make the rear float in deep water and you start to lose traction. Sawing the front wheels will sometimes give you a bit more grip.
He was lucky there was no current flowing as he would NOT have been cheering! Anyway, it was only a Toyota - so no great loss!

When in deep water the air flap for the air ducts wouldn't hold much pressure. I wonder if there is a mod or something you can do to stop water getting in?
My advice is: not to follow my advice.
