Spray painting a car at home

    Hi guys,

I've been wondering whether it's illegal to spray paint your car in the backyard or in the shed in some of the councils and shires in Melbourne?
Is it generally illegal in regional shires, like Yarra Ranges?
How about all the metro councils?
Do some of them have bans against car spray painting or or a ban against certain type of auto body paint?

Thanx in advance for any information.

Automotive spray paint is a fair bit different to house paint. Considering that there are a lot of requirements necessary in a commercial spray booth then yeah I reckon it would be technically illegal to spray out in the back yard but realistically the chances of causing trouble would be very small depending on your neighbours

Everything is illegal in Australia. According to Yarra Ranges and Nillumbik website they require a permit to set up a tent on your property. I rung them up for a joke and asked for a permit application because my daughter wanted a camp out on the weekend.

The bloke took 4 hours to get back to me and said sir I can't find the form but umm this hard to say and I hope you can read between the lines but umm sometimes laws are for people who abuse them and I hope you have a good weekend whatever you have planned.

    Spray away mate!

    Thanx guys.
I do have a paranoid elderly neighbour with mental health issues who complains just about everything.
This guy gets everybody into trouble & everybody hates him around here.
He spend a fair bit of time near the fences worried about imaginary intruders.
He made a noise last time I was painting, but nothing happened.
I was spraying the floor of the van that time.

This time I'm planning to spray the body of the van with spray cans.
I'm not planning to use a compressor for the van but, has a small area of the old Patrol to spray.
I thought it's better to make sure it's not illegal and that I don't end up with a fine.
I've read somewhere that some councils having insane rules including not being able to repair your own vehicle in your
own house, other than oil change or changing tyres.

Yeah, that's already been done by the previous people living here by raising the fence height over the council maximum height.

He came around one day while I was working on the car and compressor was running.
I was in a pretty bad mood as the compressor wasn't running properly.
He came out and complained and I was in a bad mood enough to tell him ef off and almost dragged him and kicked him out.

I just have to make sure that I don't give him any legitimate fuel to get back at me.
