Fairlead on top or bottom.

G'day, all.

I wish to use the winch cradle
(10mm plate steel) as a base
on which to construct a tube
bull bar. As it is, the cable
spools in the top of the drum as
I didn't wish the fairlead and
cable to be one of the first
points of contact in case of a
collision with an object.
I have a chance now to
change this arrangement.
I know now that the lower
the fairlead, there is slightly
less pressure applied to it.
Other than that, does it
matter if the cable spools
over or under?

Line departure angles aside, nah, top or bottom won't matter as long as;
The drum direction of rotation is correct so you aren't winching against the brake, and
The motor is rotated so any drain holes are at 6 o'clock (if a fully sealed winch then disregard)

The cables are fitted as
per colour code so the motor
is working as it should.

That would mean though Craig that if you have it winching over the top you are actually winching backwards against the brake and creating very high Drum temps as ET suggests. this should be avoided. The only way you could winch over would be to mount the winch upside down and rotate the gear box.

So rotate from under and your on a winner.
