My fire pit at camp was a hollow stump. Damn did the burn HOT that night. We had white flame and coals at the bottom of the pit.

Might be worth a look also on Ebay now and again instead of a copper insert from the old boilers our parents washed clothes in
occasionally a cast iron one pops up about 25mm thick this would hold heat for ages, Just a bigger version than the link.
I'll try and find one for you, I think they used them in butcher shops to render fats etc.
Or dig in a cast iron Bath

You can crush rock for a solid 10-12 hour shift and there will still be heat the next morning. I have had to dig one out for about 5 hours mid shift and it was like being in a fernace.

I doubt it would be free though and it could weigh well over 500kg, but so worth it

Great idea and it can be moved.

You could make something similar out of an end of a 44 quite easily and cheap.

There was a guy on ebay selling plough discs very cheap
about $10 each. Place at the rear of your fire pit to radiate heat forward
I put them 4 x upright on my potbelly flue to catch any heat
