OK wise gurus..... I have installed VLC and just been having a play. Just a quick question: I have the laptop sound turned up, and the VLC sound turned up but its still really quiet. Is there anything else that can be done? Is it more likely how its been downloaded?
keeping in mind that i havent put any drivers back on since the install.
My laptop is usually quieter than than others though.
I think I remember you saying your lapto was the same as mine. I use VLC and it's plenty loud enough, but if you scroll by using 2 fingers on the touch pad you can boost the volume to something like 400%
Couldnt get it any louder. Using 2 fingers on the pad did nothing.
yes thats correct, thats because you havent installed the utility for the trackpad. its really important you go through and install all the important drivers and utilities. the important ones are(and i remember you downloaded a ton so look out for these):
chipset driver, audio driver, trackpad/mouse/touchpad driver, graphics driver, bluetooth driver, WIFI driver, webcam driver, cardreader driver, LAN driver, USB 3.0 driver(if your comp has USB 3.0)
windows only comes with a set of generic drivers which work OK with most devices but not good with all of them which is probably why you are getting sound but only quiet sound. so its really important you apply all those drivers to your computer.
now one thing to note, you did say you downloaded a ton of drivers, i suggest you go back and re-download the drivers i have mentioned above, keep them seperate from the other ones and install those. you need to be aware that when you are picking drivers there will probably be several versions(win XP, Win 7, Win 8, ETC) make sure you only download the version that is relevant to you.
Yeah cool, I figured that it was working so I didnt need to install drivers but yep it makes sense that Windows comes with generic ones.
The drivers I downloaded were all from the HP site and specifically for my laptop running windows 7. So they should be right?

nope lol, cos there would have been 2 types of drivers, one for x64 and one for x86 (64 and 32 bit) sorry to be a pain. think of the windows drivers as the tigerz11 of the computer world hahaha
When I went onto the HP site I entered the product id, serial number etc of my laptop so it knew exactly what drivers were compatible to my system. (Windows version, processor, etc etc).
But it's no drama to get the drivers you suggested above so I'll just do that. Do you have a preferred site?
I keep getting confused and/or forgetting if I'm x64 or x86. Im pretty sure im x64.

How do I find out if I've got USB 3?
see pics for how to work out if x64 or x86. as for USB 3.0, the (inside) of the USB port is usually blue instead of black or white.
as for where to get the drivers, it definately has to come from the HP site, or there may be spyware contained in "aftermarket" drivers.
