    Advise for father in-law

    Hey all

My father in-law owns a disco which just shat its self (overheated). He has been thinking (prior to this) of trading in and buying a patrol or a cruiser. I would like to give him some advise on patrols and know that a 4.2 is the way but as his money is short he may not be able to afford one. I need to know the quality of a rb30 or which is the next best option for a diesel GQ/maverick. Or what cruiser engine is best to go for. I have a rd28eti engine and box in the shed which can be used but as I just got rid of this engine to upgrade to a TD42Ti I know the difference in quality and power. Any advise would be great but also keep in mind his budget involves repairing a disco first in order to pay for a patrol/cruiser (I prefer patrol)

Depending on the $$$$ available a 4.5 petrol GU might fit the bill. Driven hard they are thirsty but plenty of power.
Send BOB a pm he takes his every where towing his pop up jayco, Plus you have the dual fuel option

I will x2 with TD. The TB motors are just as strong as the TD's just use a little more juice.. Driven nicely it won't be to bad, and imo the price difference between the petrol and diesel will pay for a lot of fuel..
You can pick up non turbo TD's for the 5-8 thou mark, you just gotta hunt around and be prepared to wait, which may be hard in this situation.

His budget is what he can get for the disco. It's in great nic so with a fix of the current issue once we further investigate will mean say 5-6k? Maybe 7

Will be keeping to diesel and yeah wouldnt mind a turbo. They are out there but it's just finding one thats the problem. What is the say buying priority for diesels? Rd28, Rb30,zd30 td42?

TD42 of course if you can. The zd30's are GU onwards and come with all the problems..
The rb30 and 28 I have read are prone to head gaskets, but apart from that a solid motor, just under powered for towing big stuff..
Nothing wrong with an NA TD42. Up to half a mill in mine and just started replacing bits.. Completely original, clutch, injectors, hoses the lot..

The RB30 is a petrol motor mate. If you looked for long enough you could get a TD42 in that price bracket but you're mainly looking at RD28s

Oh I thought I was but just found a fella selling one stating it was diesel lol.

Another thought I have is if I upgrade my turbo system on my 2003 td42ti will everything from that bolt up to an older td42 na?

Not sure yet but I am thinking head. One bolt was squirting water out, a heater hose busted and the fuel return was split. She won't kick over now. When we pull her apart will have a better idea but any help on that side would be appreciated too

Yes it will go onto an earlier NA. Maybe a few minor things will need changing like sump drain.
