HOWTO: do bad things to a MQ front diff.
so heres how to lock up a MQ front diff, with little regard for the bearings and so such.
note, although i did the welding, i don't recommend it really. and if you do want to do it, use a stick welder as they are more forgiving to crappily prepped surfaces, oil, so on. the welds on the spider gears to the housing and to each other were only on the diff housing gears, not on the half shaft gears, its a better way to do it, less load on the bearings and the like - i wish i knew this for the first diff i welded, as now i'm after a new rx7 gen1-series3 diff center since the half shaft gears werent sitting good enough when i welded it up and its all bad. lesson learnt
that said, i still don't recommend this, until you don't care about the life of the diff - its just not good for them. and i said little regard for the bearings because, altough i didn't weld the half shaft gears, you still get weld splatter everywhere, and only a tiny amount needs to get into a bearing to destroy it, and there isn't a lot you can do about it, short of not welding near the bearings.
this only works for the MQ/MK as their front diff has a cover, so you don't need to go nuts pulling it apart to do it. i wouldn't bother ruining a GQ diff...

haha that is the budget idea
i didn't say it was wise, but it still makes me laugh thinking of the silly things we've done
also for my other toy, buying an open diff every now and again and locking it with a bit of weld is so much cheaper than shimming a VLSD or especially cheaper than buying a two way mech (that said i have a 2way mech center sitting in a diff with a broken crown gear, i just don't have the tools or patience to swap it into a new diff, and paying the expert i know would cost me 3 stock open wheeler diffs :P)

I've driven with welded diff before.. All I can say is, not worth it! Maybe if you only go off road, but on roads it's not good!
