Too true - although all you need to do is practice the procedure reasonably often. I have an auto now but when I had the manual I would sometimes reverse key start out of my driveway - just to keep my hand in. The problem is that when you need these skills its usually in a panic situation and the actions should be automatic. That can only happen with practice.
