Recently acquired an GQ wagon ST 4.2 petrol with build date of 2/96. The steering wheel has been replaced with a funky sports wheel without air bag. Can anyone out there tell me if this model was produced with or without a drivers side air bag, meaning, has it been removed from my vehicle??
Can't say 100%, but I don't think any GQ's came with air bags.

My Aug 97 GQ, last delivery off the boat for the wagon, didn't come with airbags - can't recall if it was an option - would have thought a safety device would be automatically included instead of optional though.

No air bags on any Aussie Y60 (GQ) variant as far as I know.
Indeed the early Y61 Cab Chassis didn't have any either.
Thats why you can buy the 2nd Glove box kit for the empty space on teh passenger side and swap the steering wheel for Pulsar ones once the Patrol one gets rat chewed.
I had Pulsar Steering wheels on both my GQ wagon and GU Ute
