Yea your right macca, Its a juggle of price, weight and strength.
I used 12mm ply throughout the build and come out just over 40kg, but I have a system which will last a lifetime.
Mdf is cheaper, but you loose strength. So to gain strength you need thicker material so you gain weight.
Do NOT use particle board. Although cheap it will split and halfway down a decent track you'll find you fridge bouncing wrong the cargo area..
Buy the sounds of it ozzy has used both mdf and ply.
If you look around you can get 'top sheets' off the packs for cheap. When it's all covered in carpet who cares if you have a scratch or stain??

Great build, If you had to buy the ply would you go with the same? Supporting batteries and serious speakers would be better in a heavier construction.

It looks like 19mm which is fairly heavy, as you say the surface is good for the drawers to slide and that is only on that 19mm form ply.... I think.

A lighter ply if used could be fitted with that "Teflon" strip as Drifta Kitchens use. Corners can be reinforced with 40x40x1.4 mm aluminium angle ($26.00 per 3mtr from Bunning's) I am always looking at keeping the weight down.

Like the design and use of space, a good DIY for a good price.

I think if I had a 2.8 or a 3l, and had to buy the ply, i'd opt for a 12mm marine / form ply. ( still water tight / laminate to slide drawers and strong enough to support the battery)

realistically, the difference in weight between a 12mm, 19mm or a mdf is null n void in my opinion, and I noticed nil difference in power after fitting these with 4.2 efi

top sheets or cover sheets are a thing of the past as they use 1.5.mill mdf as it is a lot cheaper and easy to dispose of
