engine random starting

I have a 96 fuel injected patrol which has just developed a problem.It starts but runs rough and tested spark which seems to be intermitent on 4 cylinder.I have put in new spark plugs to no avail.After you run it for a while and stop it it won't fire at all as if it has no fuel.It has spark.The fuel pump is working ok.
Was wondering if there is something common in the fuel management system that may be faulty?
Does this problem sound familiar to anyone? Cheers Jim

Welcome to the forum Jim. It's always nice to drop by the introductions thread to introduce yourself and tell us where you are before asking questions.
The first thing I would do is find out why you have intermittent spark at No. 4. Check the distributor cap and plug lead. Depending on how many Km's the car has done it may be worthwhile replacing the distributor cap, rotar button and plug leads.
The management system (ECU) is normally very reliable with the input sensors more likely to fail, though that is still uncommon.
