    Faulty EGR valve

In relation to my "Help What do I do next"thread , Rumcajs has said to make sure the EGR ( if faulty ) is in the open position. When I took the EGR apart it looks to have a corkscrew type plunger that pushes against a spring and activates something in the pipe from the exhaust ( can just see it through the hole ) . My question is ,what is "open ", the corkscrew right out or right in ? If I am to block the EGR will it matter what position it is in or do I try and get a 2nd hand one from the wreckers so at least it works when told by the computer. ? I can't see any possibility of playing with it once the inlet manifold goes back on so I really need to get it sorted first. Thanks in anticipation.
