Birdsville Races from SE QLD/Northern NSW (Suggested Stops & Must See's)

Hi Guys,
Me and the Motley Crew are pub crawling our way out to Birdsville, for the races or coarse, and leaving from Northern NSW/SE QLD. Question to all you experienced travellers, what routes or towns should we stop in, I have made the Yabby Races @ Windorah a must stop, but thats about it.

Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated.
