I've since learned that from a friend that with the hunting gears it will only line up once every 25 turns. Makes sense now.

I've had these gearless drive units on my wishlist for about 2 yrs.
I've sometimes considered using a 16v supercapacitor, have seen them work effectively on 12v solar setups handling inverter surge loads.

My cruise is silly for anything other than flat ground, tries too hard to stay at speed & drops back to 3rd unnecessarily, though better since having the engine/gearbox tuned.
I don't spend megabux, I have other priorities.
Bought it for 17k, spent 6k getting it up to scratch, since then just do occasional maintenance and oil changes :)

Since making this thread, I have learned that the factory alternator has an "overrunning pulley" which is a one way clutch to allow the alternator to briefly continue spinning under it's own inertia...
