Go To a sheetie and get some small expanded metal.
Depends what look your after, could go custom and drill pattern into it
would make it stand out from the others, Thats what I'd do just make sure...

Best way is to bend over from the back and stick as you described earlier.
I tried making an insert with this stuff yrs ago.
hard to do and keep it neat/straight.
but you still need to fix it in...

Whats so special about your GQ (with it not running), why does he want to get rid of the GU - that's had a lot of $$$ and work spent on it?

It is still a vehicle with an engine that wasn't made for the vehicle.
It affects everything from resale, servicing, parts, reliability.....

Its very old technology, Offenhauser and many race engines ran a cooling system which used individual tubes to even water circulation around each cylinder.especially to the rear cylinders....

It helps in continuous high output so like race 4wds etc where they spend most of there life flat out. It allows a more uniform flow to the head in turn helps with cooling it the above described...
