A good idea is to trim the tails of your cable ties with flush cutters, or if you don't have a set use toe nail clippers, the sharp end can cut next time you reach in. Good to see you used a butt...

Swap lamps left to right & see if the fault follows.
Do the rears, then the fronts & then the sides.
This will eliminate the bulbs.

I wouldn't have thought that some diesel in a petrol system would be too bad, add some lubrication, and some smoke.

A guy at work put a Redarc unit in & loved it.
He mounted it in front of the radiator on some aluminium angle near the left side. I think the mounting points were for the second fan which is not...

I assume the VDO has some electronics in it so it is a high impedance indicator, so the total resistance of the thermocouple won't make much difference.

Unit can't tell what surface it is baking on, I have turned the dial down a bit when not on sealed surface, also have to turn down to 1 or 2 when there is no car on the trailer & it is too light....
