Check wheel bearings, swivel hub bearings, all tie rod ends, steering damper, radius arm bushes and wheel balance.
Get someone to swing the steering wheel back and forth while you're under the front of the car to check the tierod ends
for play.
Jack up the front of the car, try to wobble the wheels in and out, top to bottom and side to side to check for bearing
wear.
If it happened all of a sudden, check for thrown wheel weights.
What GUtsey ute said. might sound silly but, check the wheel nuts too.
Any work been done recently? If so, check that first.
Have now checked over all bushes they all are new and seem ok have been told something with shims
Are your panhard bushes rubber or urethane?
Tony
Ah there all genuine ah well sense it under warranty she goes into shop and they will be looking for fault and replacing parts
i had the same problem in was the panhard bushes make shore thay r tight
Hi new to this was wondering if the panhard bushes would wear tyers uneven, have just had tie rod end done and new tyers put on and have had a wheel alignment as well. Have only done about 400 ks and the tyers look like they are wearing uneven. Thanks for anyone with information.
When you say "uneven" are they scalloping (blocks wearing more on the leading or trailing edge than the other end?). Maybe worn shockies as that tends to cause scalloping and uneven wear???
After reading this thread it's got me thinking about another wheel alignment/balance.
I recently bought second hand split rims with near new tyres on them, and now I get a a scary wobble at around 85, and a lesser wobble at 110. I had them all balanced, and an alignment. by the time I got it home, one weight was nearly right off, so I took it back and the re did everything.
They said it's perfectly balanced, "it must be an out of round tyre" but no they couldn't tell me which one...
Does this sound like a load of BS?
Could be the King pins mine sheard off had the same problem no shor if thats the case with you tho ?
yeah swivel housing bearings are another one to check
well after 3 months its bck lol have changed dampner again had balance alligned and rotated shims all out bushes all replaced and still goin time to check bearing i spose
That's got to be irritating! Hope the cause is revealed and Lulu is back to decorously cruising.
Have you got access to another set of wheels and tyres that don't cause problems? That's how I proved to the tyre outlet that the Pirelli's I had were out of round.... just looking to eliminate a possible cause mentioned earlier.
I agree with the out of round tyres. I had the death wobbles a few years back. I watched the tyres be balanced twice to zero and yet it still wobbled. I had 2 out of 4 tyres out of round. And every time I would swap then front to back it would still wobble. I changed every bush and the wobble went away after borrowing some other wheels.
ah thanks might try some new wheels ive been looking at getting some muddies might be time lol
How's your drag link largey? Mine's absolutely farked & gettin replaced tomorrow. No doubt it's contributing to my wobble
Well to add to confusion I took it to the usual mechanic and lol $550 later has no idea of problem and is still charging me well least to say not getting more business out of me and as I left mechanics went over 80 witch I wish I had not due to it shaking so bad my dash lights come on and now have teeth marks in my new black duck covers lol
And well this gonna sound stupid but I'm taking it to pedders gonna c how they go with it might well give em crack at it
Hi Largey,
check all the usual stuff. tie-rod ends, drag-link ends (rod from steering box to stub axle). Make sure everything is tight & in good nick. Swap rear tyres (if not scalloped/irregularly worn). Toe-in needs to be 0-1-2mm in. anymore & only outside of l/h tyre will wear. Correctly adjust wheel bearings as most wheel alignment places dont bother & 70% of the time this is the cause. Caster setting shouldn't be any higher than approx. 1.5-2 degrees. I was a truck mechanic for 20+ years & some mercedes used to do this to point of shaking so bad they would break steering arms. You want good flat rubber on the front ,a dynamic (on vehicle) wheel balance done along with proper alignment. There should also be (can't remember the exact ft/lbs) a certain amount of pre-load on the upper & lower pivot bearings. Hope this helps
Its not often a problem ive heard of with patrols but if you still have you sway bar fitted check the link rod bushes. I recently had a car that shook so bad from a loose nut on the link rod it bent the panhard rod. Also with these lads suggesting that ur tires may be out of round, jack ur vehicle up so that the tires are just a mill off the ground and slowly spin them and watch the gap. Also check the top of your shock towers in case a shock has partly punched through. And if its really that hard to find whats wrong with your car you may not look stupid to check the rear end of your trol. It can be surprising what something broken in the back can feel like in the front.
I reckon their should be a comprehensive guide done up on the shakes and how to eliminate it as it would have to be one of the most commonly asked questions i have ever seen.
when i was an apprentice there were plenty of manuals and guides with this sort of information. It would just be a matter of finding the right textbook, google can fix anything man
I've even had brand new tierod ends faulty.
ebay items, had to throw all 4 in bin and replace.
Local bullseye supplied at similar price, and problems solved.
Iv'e notice alot of stuff on sus-bay prices are becoming retail, no real saving .
Especially if your purchasing something 2nds in quality.
Quality can at times be considered suspect reguardless of their claims.
If return or warranty is short term , then you weight it up.
Steel type rims are bent and or out of round more time than not.
Pays to check em before you throw any new tyres on em.
You could just be making a temp fix .
And rims soon ware/damage new tyres , and problems back.
1 of the post mentioned jackup and spinning tyre slowly to check for out of round tyre.
Recon you should be trying this for sure.
You need to study whole surface of tyre .
Have had outside edge ok, but inside out of round.
And visa/versa.
Do all of em incl spares, your spare/s could be faulty also.
Well looks like I'm in for big day tammaw will start checking out problem one at a time
Have you checked to make sure the free wheel hubs are disengaged. If the front diff has a bit of wear and tear it can set up a wobble in the tailshaft giving you the "death wobble" sensation.
I had same prob recently. Did pan hard bushes, now old girl runs straight and true.
I have the same problem with my '93 Maverick. No lift , but running16' rims & 33' tyres. Would a visit to Pedders for the $14 check over be worthwhile ??
Send us a pm mate may be able to help you out.
Got the wheels roatated & balanced ( apparently I was supposed to do this after 10k). It cost $50 and now it drives like a different car, much more assured on the road. Money well spent. Now I need to look at adding a turbo 7 a lift :-)
start with the cheapest and do wheel balance first.
