Drive shaft problems

Hello you all, I am new to this site but I would really appreciate any help from anybody because I really need it.

1. I currently own a 1992 nissan patrol GQ and for monetary facts I've decided to put in a SD33 non turbo with its transmission at least until I can buy the original TD42 so basically my questions are:

A. I know this is a slow engine but I am not going to be racing or doing hardcore offroad, so would this engine work as far as everyday usage and medium offroad activities ?

B. My main problem is that this transmissions transfer its to the right and my rear original differential its in the center as you all know, so my question is WILL THIS WORK AT ALL ?

C. If for some reason it doesn't work can I swap my rear differential to one that has just about the same ratio and it has the offset to the right so that way its in line with the transfer case ?

D. Last but not least, which differential will work just fine because I was thinking of a rear diff from a MK patrol which is the original diff for the engine and transmission but I don't know it the diff is too narrow ?

Please take into consideration that its easier for me to change the rear differential instead of changing the whole engine and transmission......... well at least for now.

The first thing I have to ask is WHY? What has happened to the original engine that you want to replace it? My second question is does your Patrol have coil springs or leaf springs?

A. Yes but it will be slow. In Australia it would also be illegal as you would not be fitting an engine that complies to the emmission regulations relevent to the build date of the vehicle. (Ute or wagon, leaf spring or coil spring, what corner of the world are you from etc - this is why we ask people to post an introduction, it helps us get to know you and your Patrol)

A.5. You would also need to modify the engine mounts, fuel system, exhaust, electrics, cooling system.

B. You can try it but I suspect it will need a custom driveshafts and will vibrate badly due the steep angles of the rear shaft.

C. If you have a leaf spring ute then maybe but the ratio needs to be LESS than 2% different to the front diff.

D. MK Patrol diff would be the closest to fitting as it's also a H233b but would only be remotely possible if you have a leaf sprung ute. MK diffs are too narrow in the track to fit to a coil sprung GQ and are not set up with brackets for coil springs, trailing arms, panhard rods etc.

Getting back to my first question, why are you thinking of putting in the SD33 and gearbox? The cost and effort involved modifying engine mounts, fuel systems, exhaust systems, cooling system, tailshafts, electrics etc just to fit a temporary engine would almost cover the cost of a TD42 and the modifications would all need to be reversed anyway?

first of all thanks, I am from Panama city, Central America. My GQ has coil suspension, in regards to the mod they are already done (engine and transmission mounts only because the cooling system, electric system, exhaust systems and fuel systems remains the same all it took was just to connect the hoses) and in fact the engine and transmission are already inside with everything connected. What happen is that I've always wanted to have a nissan Patrol GQ but in this case when I bought it already came with the engine in it because it looks like the original one died completely so the previous owner decided to use this one. For me is shipper and easier to finish this project and use it at least until I can affort to buy the original one with all the components or put in an 8 cylinder engine and use it only for the weekends meanwhile for everyday driving I'll use a regular sedan Ohh and one thing I forgot to mention is that the original engine TD42 will cost me at least $4500 USD without transmission so we're talking about $7000 USD for the whole thing engine with everything and transmission with drive shafts and not to mention the labor cost. The fuel and colling system connects directly to the SD33 engine without a doubt the only thing was the mounts but its been done already only need to connect the front shaft and rear shaft Ohh and other thing is the I have to use lift blocks to lift the body so the transmission fits perfectely... but that's fine because I was thinking to do it at first my only problem is the angle of the rear shaft, honestly to be honest its not that bad but still an angle which is the same as you would have when using a lift kit but the only difference is that mine is side to side and not up and down.

OK, so most of the work has already been done. I think the easiest solution is going to be getting driveshafts made up to connect the gearbox to the diffs rather than trying to get an offset rear diff. I would suggest when you get the rear driveshaft made up get it made with a double carden joint as this will make the shaft a lot more tolerant of driveshaft misalignment.

Damm Tony thank you very much, To be honest w/u that makes a lot of sence....... why I didn't think of that..... that's a very good solution at least until I can collect funds for the original engine and trans. Now you mention that " IT WOULD BE SLOW" how slow would that be ?? because I am not looking to race; all I'll be doing is normal city driving ( no more than 80km ) and here and than once in a while some medium offroad but nothing out of the ordinary.... well at least until I can get the good stuff or is that too fast ???

thanks very much for the help man....... now my other question is and I am sorry to bother. Its there a specific double carden joint I can use on my patrol, from another truck or custom made, and would it be better if I use 2 double carden joints on my rear shaft ????

No bother at all, we're here to help.
Talk to a driveshaft specialist they will have D/C joints in different sizes and have one to suit your needs, you only need one D/C joint.

SD33 aren't slow as such, but without a 5 spd box they do rev high at 100km'h. But that's as good as you get for speed. Where as a SD33T and 5spd box will cruise at 120km/h easily and still have more in the trunk.

Sweet man, thank you. The only little problem is that I wish here in my country all types of 4x4 products where found, Its very rare to find parts like that here in Panama there are but you have to find a needle in a hay barn that's why its a pretty good business to open up here and from the location of Panama you can distribute to any part of the world but the only problem is that I don't have the money to start, I might have the ideas but not the money.

Well it should be ok than because I have a 5 speed gear box in mine, its a very rare or maybe the first time its been done but it should work just fine.
