GQ Automatic gearbox Differences

Gidday,
Does anyone know the differences between autos on the GQ Safari/Patrols?
I’m looking at swapping my broken auto from my 1990 factory turbo Safari for one out of a 1996 factory turbo?
Both trucks are TD42 T diesels.
I’m sure my truck has had a later model turbo motor installed but not sure about the gearbox.
Having a quick look at the gearbox’s the main wiring plug looks different? The older box has 8 wires where as the newer box has only 7.
This wiring plug comes out of the box from above the rear of the pan on the drivers side of the gearbox.
Any help is greatly appreciated

Try this thread mate, sorry can't help with the plug wiring issue sorry , maybe one of the gearboxes aftermarket upgrade that required an additional wire.

Can you get the model number of the gearboxes they should be stamped on the housing somewhere

I know when I rebuild my auto gearbox a part I needed was different from what was sent and needed :(

Cheers for that. I’ll have a look and see if I can get the numbers.
The boxes themselves are identical, it’s just the one plug that’s different, as well as the plugs coming off the shifters.
Makes me wonder if the control units/computers are different also?
Will do some more investigating and have a good read up on your rebuild thread

Might help if you post some pics. The later boxes have 8 wires: 5 for the 5 solenoids, 1 for the temp sensor & 2 for the temp switch.

These are the plugs I am talking about. The last 2 photos are of the gearbox that’s in the truck at the moment, 8 wires and the 2nd photo is of the newer gearbox plug, 7 wires, and where the wires come from the gearbox. The plug and wiring exits the same place on both gearboxes.
Also added a picture of the shifters side by side, the single plug shifter is off the newer gearbox

Looks like someone has bridged the black & white temp sensor wires. Here’s a pic showing where the wires go inside the trans.
The 4 wires in the 2 plugs at the top of the pic go to the 4 solenoids on top of the valve body.

You can see the black & white wires that go to the temp sensor.

Would those wires being bridged allow to lock up to work sooner or is there another purpose to bridging them?
By looking at this picture I would assume that I can plug the new gearbox in without any dramas?
Really appreciate the help, not many transmission workshops are knowledgable on these gearboxes in my neck of the woods!!

Might have been done because of a bad temp sensor not allowing lockup.

That seems to make sense. I’ll see what happens when I bolt it all up and go for a drive, hopefully it works a bit better than the old one!,

Is the newer box out of a Safari, could it be something 2 do with one being 24v and possible the other 12v???

Yeah new one is out of a 24v Safari, the old guy converted it to manual and sold me the auto for cheap.
My main concern was his Safari was a 1997, guess it’s 1996 build 1997 registered, but he said this trans guy said the boxes are all the same through the GQ series

If your current vehicle is 12v, you'll need to swap out the 24v solenoids. That means removing the valve body.
Not a difficult job, especially with the trans out, but does require a bit of mechanical aptitude.

You should drop the pan of the new trans anyway to wash out the gauze strainer and flush with new fluid.

Later GQs had the larger ribbed bellhousing with bigger torque converter. I think that started with the TB42 EFIs.

My truck is 24V so there shouldn’t be a problem in that sense. I’ll drop the pan and give everything a tidy up and check over before putting the new box in. Interesting about the bell housing sizes, I’ll be checking the difference once I have the boxes sitting side by side.

So after some more research it appears that I may have a non turbo automatic behind my motor.
The gearbox currently in the truck has a non ribbed bell housing and I have been informed that a ribbed bell housing gearbox will not fit.
So it turns out that although I have a factory black top turbo motor the ribbed bell housing turbo automatic will not fit and I need to source a non ribbed automatic, so I’m guessing my truck has had a motor swap at some stage.
The ribbed bell housings are bigger and deeper and cause the gearbox mounts to sit roughly 70mm back.

I have a TB45E trans with the ribbed bell housing behind a ‘96 factory turbo engine. I’m using the original TD42T flex plate with the standard TB45E torque converter.
This is in a GU so I don’t know about the trans mounting in a GQ but the box certainly fits.

That’s interesting, I am wondering if that is the case with what I have, a non turbo bell housing on a turbo gearbox.
I’m tempted to put the box in just to see if it will fit......

I’m not aware of a “turbo” version of the RE4R03A trans for a TD42T. A stock TD42T is not a particularly powerful engine.

Apparently the “turbo” version has a bigger, deeper torque converter with a couple more clutch plates and is from 93 onwards, this is what my transmission guy has told me.
I ended up buying a rebuilt unit and put it in the truck which bolted up with no issues, well until I drove it at least.

Your trans guy is probably thinking of the 300ZX turbo which has an extra friction in the high clutch and in the low & reverse brake.
