Blocking the EGR valve on ZD3o DI 2003/ leaking turbo and intercooler

Hi all
After reading the thread about the EGR i have blocked it on my 1996 2.8 , and my was there some shit in the insert that i pulled out ( i removed the valve completely and there is a sleeve like thing in there that slides out it has an opening at the end and it was almost full of hard soot ) Wish it was blocked by someone when it was new.
Anyway my brother in law has a ZD30 2003 and we took the cover of the motor to find the EGR valve and im not sure where it is ......the forum photos show the valve on a 2.8 GU and i cant see one on the ZD30 can someone help.
Also we found that there was oil leaking somewhere around the turbo and the inter cooler had oilish stains around the intake on both sides of the cooler .......
Any ideas ??????

The attached photo shows the positions where you can block the EGR on a ZD30Di motor. The photo is of my 2003 3lt.

I can't be certain without seeing a photo (send them to me again if you're still having trouble) but it sounds like the intercooler is leaking. The oil you are (most likely) seeing is condensed PCV oil mist - the reason a lot of us fit PCV filters or catch cans.

Thats a very good diagram, i have looked at the tube going to the inlet and from that valve and noticed there where electrical wires plugged into the top so i thought id better ask before i tried anything.

I am trying to look at your photos of the ZD30 you sent and all i get is a message saying that i ether have not logged on ( which i have ) or i did not confirm my email, how do i confirm my e mail????

That is the classic leaking intercooler on a ZD30. I'll dig up some older threads showing you options for replacement.
As I suggested earlier the oil is PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) oil mist.
In all 4 stroke engines there is an amount of combustion gas that leaks past the piston rings into the crankcase of the engine (known as blowby), also in the crankcase is oil mist caused by the engine oil being thrown around inside the engine. To stop the blowby pressurizing the crankcase the crank case needs to be vented, but venting those gases/emmissions upsets the greenies. To keep the greenies under control manufacturers run a hose (the PCV hose) from the rocker cover on top of the engine back around to the intake duct between the air filter and the inlet manifold, this allows the PCV vapours (a mix of blowby and oil mist) to be drawn back into the engine to be burnt.
One downside to this process is that the oil mist condenses and coats the entire inlet tract with a fine coating of oil, the oil that is now leaking from you turbo and intercooler.

A PCV filter or catch can fits in line with the PCV hose and seperates the oil mist and blowby. The oil is trapped to be drained later (can be plumbed to auto drain back to the sump in some installations) and the blowby is allowed through to be burnt. The greenies are still happy because the are no additional emmissions to the atmosphere...............unless you had a curry for dinner and are driving with the windows down but that's another matter entirely!

This is the Mann Hummel Provent 200 PCV filter that myself and a lot of others have fitted to our Patrols.

On the main unit (centre of photo) you can see the inlet and outlet fittings that connect to the PCV hose. You basically cut the hose in half and fit the filter in the middle. The small fitting on the bottom of the main unit is the collected oil drain, most of us just put a length of hose on here with a tap on the bottom for periodic draining. You can buy a valve that allows you to connect the bottom fitting to the sump for auto draining, I have a valve but never got around to fitting the auto drain.

So how long can he keep driving it for before he fixes it do you think ? he has no spare money at the moment.
I have told him to clean his MAF sensor as well, it has 180000 km on it and he is worried as his friends just blew up and cost him a lot of money to re-build, it blew at 175000.

Ok i can see photos now, thats great where can they be bought and should i fit one on my 2.8 1996

The sooner the better obviously but the problem has been there undetected for some time so a bit longer "shouldn't" hurt. I'll cover my arse here by saying that I can not guarantee it won't blow up tomorrow or next week, just that it's very unlikely.

Can you see the paper clip now?

I got mine from Western Filters at Darra (Brisbane westside) but you can find them on EBay as well.
It can only do your engine good to fit one. Especially for engines (ZD30 is one) that also have exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), the carbon from the recirculated exhaust gases combines with the PCV oil mist in the inlet manifold to form a sticky black tar like mess that builds up in the inlet manifold and intake ports. Blocking the EGR helps too.

Right on the money Tony, Myth indeed. Not just ZD30's ,I saw a pic on a 200 series, wow.
I'll see if I can find it. lol

Prado inlet manifold with open EGR lol, now you can understand why the EGR needs to be blocked, you can't see this from under the bonnet!!

Sorry about that last post, i didnt have any of the last pictures or messages you or ferret sent until i sent that last message and then it all came up at once... ill get this sorted out sooner or later.
So thats what all that junk in the inlet manafold was when i looked in the hole where the valve goes, i thought the engine was stuffed........
my 2.8 has 205 ks on it and iv only just blocked the EGR.......so catch can next and then so how much longer it runs for !!!
No paper clip ??

Hi all - New Patrol owner I just purchased a 2004 3.0TDi Patrol and it has a very slight bit of oil around turbo inlet (nothing like the photos posted). From reading the thread looks like it might be the PCV oil mist as mentioned. I asked my local auto parts about a PCV filter but he didn't know of any.
Can you buy the filter (or catch can) mentioned in this thread or is it made up stuff?

Good to have another S.E. Queenslander on board.

Mines been fitted for more than a year now and has performed faultlessly, although in that time the car has done less than 4000km. From other reports I have read from people who have tried other types of catch cans and PCV filters the Provent 200 is by far the best.
You can also hook these up to auto drain back to the sump which is something I would like to do to mine when I get time.

Hi there, been looking at the reference doc about blocking EGR, I haven't seen anything about wiping it electronically from the ECU? My local tuning company in the UK offers this service (don't know if they can do it to a Patrol). Has anyone over there any experience of blocking it electronically - and know of any downfalls of doing it? In the UK there is no legal requirement (yet) to have the EGR working.

I think it's cheaper, easier and if necessary more easily reversible to just fit a blocking plate.
