Harrop Eaton ELocker Versus GU Family Wagon Auto Hubs?

G’day NP.com.au Team,
We are looking towards purchasing an ELocker for the front differential of our family GU wagon for some extra Nissan great rear LSD assistance on an upcoming adventure early next year.omegle discord xender
Have experienced great mechanical reliability from ARB Air Lockers over the years on my shorties and utes with free wheeling hubs and saver rings although to be honest cannot be bothered with air lines this family time around.
As slow and steady as I’m allowed to wagon go would really appreciate any feedback on whether or not stock auto hubs (turned to true off road lock of course) would survive?
We really do like the stock auto function back at home in and out of grassy paddocks and are hoping they might be ok out there under heavier locker duress?

Had a Auto Lokka in the front of my GU for years with standard Auto Hubs, i did convert the Hubs to Manual "Only" to avoid conflict with the way the Auto Lokka works, but this mod takes bits out of the hub, and so offers no added strength (i ran no saver rings or other mods to hub)

I flogged it all through some pretty serious stuff, and it was my Daily so did lots of Ks, never broke a Hub.


You MUST lock them in M as you have already suggested you will, the only problem is, if someone has already flogged the Hubs in Auto Mode (could be previous owner) they may have left lots of fractures waiting for the extra load to just go pop on you, i think this is why Auto Hubs got a reputation as being weak, anyway.......they are dead easy to replace if you do break one, and having a locker you can still drive with a busted Hub.

I have a locking diff in the front of my GU ute no wires ! no air lines . just engage the free wheeling hubs . and off u go .
no good at high speed but unstoppable in low range . I did not want any wires or hoses anywhere near

FWIW-2:
#Airlockers…..somewhat instant pinion rotation engagement, if understanding of ones driveline gear pressure/release/engage for speed!
#ElectronicLockers….same same similar but a designed rolling axle engagement to engage, not ideal on harsh switchbacks.
#AutoLockers, in my opinion, although now built stronger for confusing mechanical river bed rocks are still dangerous on hairpin gnarly mountain corners as they are completely un-selectable pushing forward and off steer [emoji51][emoji51]

Eaton Detroit locker old school tough . I have had zero problems . This the 3rd one fitted in the front of my utes .
poor old Rodeo just went 800000 kms still going strong .

Sorry to say Tip Old Mate, that Detroit will steer you straight into the bank up the likes of Barkley River switchy back these gnarly days [emoji51]
Hell of a steep up left that cracker and truly needs selectable traction on/off IMHO.

thats why I have it fitted to the front ! ts not for going fast its for traction in the rough stuff . low range only

my next one will be a Torsen .. I dont want anything hanging off the diff housing just waiting to get ripped off

My LoKKa by 4wd systems was the absolute best traction aid I ever owned. Had twin ARB lockers on a Hilux previously, the lokka I found much more driveable

My apologies if came across a wee bit rude the other late night Tip Mate [emoji120]
All diff locker brands are great these days but I do feel compelled to stress that in certain circumstances/terrain like 170 degree hairpin corners on steep mountains user care absolutely must be taken. Watching mates of old & new over time in front especially descending down gnarly reduction geared switchbacks where their truck keeps pushing forward at 3kmph towards a slippery cliff edge is not fun [emoji51]

Please Don’t run your ‘Auto-Lockers’ stinking hot into a cold slippery rocky creek, please also don’t expect your design flawed elecy lockers to disengage within 0.5m on a safely needed hairpin say 170 degree turn.

By design, ball bearing slotting over the years, H-E-Lockers have worked very hard to try and achieve’instants’ [emoji106][emoji106]
Successfully they have shortened the ‘lock’ now I nuffy believe down to a 1/2 or hopefully a 1/4 rotation to ball lock?
Dare I say, that lock/unlock requires forward and backward rotation still too [emoji51]
IMHO: Perfect for known visable say Bulldust Touring straight stretches…..useless for my arrogant needs currently [emoji23][emoji23]

E-Lockers first variants were:

1 x full rotation (forward/backwards) TO Lock [emoji359]

Give or take 31/33/35/37” tyres is HUGE….. 2.5 <<<>>>4m OFF OUR Cliffs [emoji51]
