How long is a piece of string? The pump went on my ZD, I binned the motor and did a TD swap instead. If I knew then what I know now, I would have gone a Cummins. Hindsight is a great thing...
I spend 13k in 2015 fully rebuilding my grenade. The motor has just karked it again, I will not spend another cent on that motor, currently in the process of sourcing an ls1 to do a conversionQuote:

From what I nuffy understand the new craze of the Cummins 6BT albeit a weapon of a motor causes serious overweight engineering issues on Patrols. So much so that was led to believe a bullbar alone (no winch) is enough to overdo their front ends.
Currently run a Chev 6.5NA diesel in my tractor ute as bought already converted but honestly wouldn’t recommend this as a viable option for new conversion.
Bang for buck, the Holden LS1 keeps coming up trumps in all the numbers, including initial expense & easier engineering.
Certainly more and more are heard around our high country tracks yearly although unsure if an LS1 is best for outback petrol touring needs like a TD42 old faithful clacker!

Thought best to add here roughly learnt/quoted understandings of professional drive-in/out conversion dollars for 3.0L Patrols over the years:
#LS1 $15k-‘ish’
#TD42T $20k-‘ish’
#6.5NA $30k -‘ish’
#6.5T $35k-‘ish’
#6BT & 6.6Duramax $50k-‘ish’
More than happy to be corrected and many more conversion possibilities out there but one must consider readily available adaptation kits and engineers sign off comfort needs too!

6BT can be done for less that half of 50K MB. Unless its a full rebuild with everything new... A customer of mine just finished his GU 6BT conversion. Paid 7k for an import motor from the UK, spent another 6'ish putting it in and engineered. The motor lasted 2000k and the seller from the UK shipped a whole complete motor to him for nothing. im in the process of sorting out a 6bt conversion , 6bt should only be about 60kg heavier that td42 , i should have mine over a weigh bridge in a few weeks , $30k is around the drive in drive out cost depending on transmission etc

My 2016 patrol wagon with ls3 and all marks adapters,285/70/17 wildpeak tyres.towbar,nissan bullbar,toolkit went,2500 kg on weighbridge for engineering.It also has 2 inch lift and is a manual.hope this helps.

I think the Cummins 4.5 should be on this list. It is just about a drop in fit and has plenty of horses.
Is the the 4bt 4 cylinder? I reckon that would be a good option, sure plenty of power still. Yeah not sure about a 6bt I'm sure would be awesome power and insane torque but the weight is an issue. . Maybe if your just towing / touring 6bt would be mint. .Quote:
