TPMS disable

Because my Series 4 TPMS sensors are fitted only to 4 wheels, each time I rotate the 5 wheels, either as part of the normal rotation procedure or due to a puncture, the warning light illuminates and stays on because one of the 4 wheels on the vehicle does not have a sensor. I don't like driving with any warning light illuminated, and I don't want to have to go to a Nissan dealer each time to have the system re-calibrated. I guess one option is to fit a sensor to the 5th wheel. Another is to disable the system, but the handbook does not indicate whether the system can be disabled. Before I put the question to Nissan, do any owners on this forum know whether the TPMS can actually be disabled? If yes, what's the procedure?

Fitting a sensor to the spare won't help.
The TPMS system only allows for the registration of 4 sensors at any time so as soon as you fit the spare you will still have the problem and need it 'registered' by Nissan or a a tyre mob with the appropriate scantool.

AFAIK there is no way around the issue.

Thanks.....that's what I suspected. I've already had a brawl with Nissan about the recent 30000 km service, and I'm not inclined at all to pay for them to "re-register" the TPMS every time I rotate the tyres. I'm yet to check whether the TPMS is through a dedicated single purpose fuse and whether that may be a way of de-activating the system.

The fuse in question is fuse #3 (10 Amp) (Ign power supply #2) and it also supplies brake switches and other equipment.
The TPMS uses Canbus to 'talk' to the Instrument Cluster so I think it won't solve the problem

You can try pulling it but I think you may lose brake lights and/or cruise and also still illuminate the warning lamp/s

Thanks again. Good advice. Looks as though I've hit a brick wall on this one. One of a couple of irritating issues in what I'm otherwise finding to be a pretty good vehicle.

I have spoken to my Nissan Dealer re this issue. Firstly they said they dont include the spare during rotation because of the sensors. This is what I am going to do. Tyre rotation is part of the nissan warranty service. So re registering the tyres is part of the service. I am fitting a sensor to my spare at my cost. Then the dealer will re register the tyres when rotated at service. I will drop the spare and put it in the boot before service so the poor dears don't over exert themselves.

So let me get this straight....the sensor is located to the rim?...so you can rotate four around the gen4...no probs but the spare must be maintained as a spare?

Well yeah sort of , the sensors are attached to the valve inside the tyre/wheel I believe , can't say I have seen one .
You can buy and install a extra sensor and fit it to the spare but when you fit the spare you have to take it to Nissan and get them to code it so it will show on the dash , the dash can only show 4 sensors , you would have to do that every time if doing a 5 tyre rotation , unless you bought ya own scan thingy .

But my Nissan dealer said I couldn't do that because the extra sensor would interfere with the others and none would work but they are full of it because others have done it .

Yep, total bullshit.
The tyre has to be rotating to "wake up" the sensor, and the sensor unique ID has to be "registered" on the TPMS which has a max of 4 at anytime... none of which can happen with a 5th sensor on a spare, it is asleep and not registered on the TPMS

.if im rotating my 4 tyres..keeping the spare as a spare im ok....(sounds screwed up i know)

If i wanna rotate the spare without the internal valve tpms i gotta ask my local shop to change the valves ???....so wont need to take it to nissan as the head unit monitoring the tpms will still see that vale spinning like all four should ...(swap vales each rotation)

Yes that would work but don't ya think that would be a pita , probably better off just buying a extra sender and getting the Nissan dealer to register it each time , depending on the dealer I guess ,
My dealer I think it would be to much bloody trouble even though it's only a 5min job .

Agreed...particualy important to rotate just the fouras the 62 gets older when peeps start doing their own servicing etc?

I do two things

1- carry a portible compressor to inflate the tire and usually for 99% of the punctures, the tire can hold pressure for few hours.

2-maintaining a spare tire is more expensive than a towing truck these days that is only if the tire can not hold pressure which I had few times in my life.

But for heavy off-road people that maybe exposed to unsafe situation, then I understand even two spare tires are justified

Unless you never left the inner city, this advice is pretty irrelevant and potentially dangerous for Australian drivers mate.

Seeings as how this thread has been 're-awoken' ........ am I correct in assuming that these Nissan supplied tyre pressure sensors are fitted inside the tyre & need to be re-programmed every wheel rotation?

My aftermarket TPMS with the sensors fitted to the valve stems has a specific sensor for each wheel position, so the sensors get moved.

Just asking for my education - are all internal tyre pressure sensors somehow re-programmable? If not do tyres need to come off the rim every rotation?

Dunno if it helps overall Cuppa but specific to the Y62...

I have 5 x Ridge Grapplers and 5 x Factory all with nissan internal sensors (so total of 10)
All internal sensors have a unique digital ID no matter who makes them.

The Patrol TPMS processor will only store 4 sensor ID's at any time
-If I rotate any tyre off the vehicle (eg 5 wheel rotation thru the spare) or swap the entire set the ongoing sensor/s has/have to be registered with the TPMS.
-If I rotate the tyres on the vehicle (eg a 4 wheel rotation excl the spare) no dramas

Because the sensors need to be "woken up" to register with the TPMS there are specialist electronic kits (freely available but not cheap) and a "one off" registration procedure that has to be carried out each time a sensor (IE wheel assy) is taken off 1 of the 4 corners of the vehicle.
Not all sensor manufacturers use the same frequency so not all test kits necessarily work on all vehicles so Nissan or the Tyre mob if they have a compatible kit need to do a registration procedure
Once 4 sensors are registered all is good until the next tyre removal.

Bottom line is even tho all 10 sensors of my sensors have been registered at one time or another on my vehicle only the last 4 registered road driven tyres are monitored (sensors registered on the TPMS and after each start woken up by exceeding 20 KPH momentarily).
If any 1 or more are rotated off/replaced/fail the TPMS knows it is "missing" but will not automatically delete the "missing" one and replace with the current sensor data.
