Clutch noise at high RPMs

Hi All,

Car is a 05 TD42TI with 160,000kms with a full service history.

When I change gear at high RPMs (3k+, sometimes 2.5k, but rarely) there is a slight chatter noise and i can kind of feel a vibration in the pedal. Due to this, I've replaced the clutch with a UFI clutch, the spigot bush, and the throwout bearing. The flywheel was machined at the same time. The noise is still present, albeit not as loud, but it's still there. Driving around normally it's perfectly, sounds great and feels great. The noise/chatter is only there when I get on it, so higher revs. The clutch was replaced by the old man (mechanic of 30+ years) but the noise is still there. Before i just got throw money at a gearbox/driveline specialist, any ideas? The old man isn't too certain and is also at a bit of a loss. Is there a possibility that the master/slave cylinder is worn inside and causing a problem? Thinking maybe its the input shaft bearing? Which would suck, as we only had access to a hoist for a few days and ill also need to pay someone if its that! Any ideas? Thanks.

Sorry I should add, the noise is only when I push the clutch in, it disappears after a couple seconds. No noise letting the clutch out.

G’day Mitchell, I’d be a terrible mechanic for advice but if you good blokes have already properly checked replaced ‘all’ driveline gear then could it be donk bearing related?

If its only when you push the clutch in then it is likely the throwout bearing its the only thing that isnt in operation when the clutch is engaged. So as soon as you push the peddle it then comes onto play. Was the bearimg the same as the one removed? Was it lubed at all? Also was the shaft lubed where the throwout bearing carrier runs?

Hi Nssannewby, everything that required lube, was lubed. We've replaced a couple a couple of these clutches before and never had a problem :\ . The old bearing was completely stuffed and the new one the same as the original, it came in the UFI kit. Unfortunately we won't have access to a hoist so I feel like i'll need to pay someone like $800 or what ever to drop the box and double check everything which is very frustrating.

Screw doing it on the ground!

Also id like to say sometimes if you change at 3,000revs it makes a noise and others it doesn't. It does feel like the peddle has a very minor shake when the noise is present.

Miitchell, So NO chatter noise or vibration noticed with clutch engaged, driving under load or cruising with eng under low load condition?

If your answer is no and that you have replaced clutch assy, thrust and spigot bearings and had fly wheel M/C, then IMO you may have to check out the G/Box input shaft bearing. Your mechanic may have done a rough check for play/wear (ask him) and I do not think it is the slave or master cyl.
Did the fly wheel have any hot spots evident on it prior to being M/C?

NO noise when cruising or anything like that ONLY when engaging the clutch at high RPMs 3k+, fine under that, not always happening. Engaging the clutch when stationary or driving to normal conditions (changing gears around 2-2.5k revs) there is no noise at all. The flywheel had a lot of heat marks on it and it was machined. I am leaning towards the input shaft bearing, and plan to take the vehicle to a drive line / gearbox specialist next week. We didn't check the input shaft bearing as the throwout bearing was completely stuffed, extremely dry and made a horrible noise when rotating the bearing. My old man is the mechanic who did it and I assisted, he's been a mechanic for >30 years.

and I would guess by the sound of it, this is your Dad's thought as well as yours. Let us know how it goes.

Just a definition
The clutch is designed to engage and disengage the connection between the engine flywheel and the transmission input shaft. The clutch is operated by pushing on the clutch pedal inside the vehicle, which causes the clutch to disengage, and as the pedal is released the clutch will engage.

Don't just noticed it once around 2.5k so tried to figure out when it happens.

Also when overtaking sometimes.
