Oil Container Split inside vehicle

I carry a supply of oil with me into the bush, and recently I noticed an oil smell but dismissed it as another Chev conversion stink. Today whilst unpacking the vehicle i found the source - a split 4L container of oil that had leaked into one of the side rear storage boxes - lost about 100ml I reckon, but what a mess, coated everything sitting on the bottom of the box. Seems the side walls could not take the load and the plastic simply folded, then split - brand new container of Valvoline . So, I have transferred the oil into a stiffer 2L bottle and a couple of 1L containers - first time this has happened, might be unlucky.

Yes, was lamenting about your external storage box! Bloody handy it would have been, anyway, sort of cleaned up, oil in smaller/stronger containers, so hope this fixes the issue.

Same thing happened to my son and he thought it was just the old car smell too , till he lifted the carpet in the boot one day .
On the plus side he said it shouldn't rust over in a hurry .

my mrs use to work at coles.....when they spilt oil cooking,they used salt engine they used kitty litter......,,,she's mummbling...i think she also said hot soapy water

I know the feeling.
When I bought my 4.2 GU Phil. Picked it up from Adelaide. The original owner, says, oh heres some oil I've got left over, I won't need it anymore. So I throw it in the back on the very last seats (which luckily I was going to remove as soon as I got home anyway)... along with some other spares he had for the car.
Driving back to Melbourne, I get to horsham, pull into maccas to get a feed. Jump back into car to keep moving... I notice a distinct oily smell. Hmmm.
Mind instantly begins to wonder.... Shit I bought a Lemon, oil pissing out of somewhere... etc etc ... Pop the bonnet, everything clean and dry. Look all around under the vehicle all good. Hmmm. Thought to my self, maybe it's just diesel residue from filling up back in Adelaide hills.
As I keep driving the oil smell begins to increase... Shit better pull over. And then it dawned on me. Open the barn doors and there it was. Container turned on its side, spilling around half a liter onto the rear seat. Which once again, luckily, were coming out anyway!!!

Same here. Oil bottle leaked in rear drawer. Laid newspaper for a couple of days, salt for a couple of days. But will never be the same [emoji25]

Annoying, simply annoying. I will look around for a heavier duty container, but for now splitting the size into one and two litres should suffice, but the lesson perhaps is that the loads are much higher than we think. I do have 2 additional steel boxes that mount under the floor between the side of the chassis rails and the body. These also house gearbox, brake, ps fluid and a range of 'never needed' spares, and funny enough have not had a single leak in 120,000klm, then this container split circa 300klms from new.

had the same thing happen to me 5 years ago, a whole 4L container was crushed by a piece of wood in the back on the fridge slide
never smelt it - and the car was sitting for 2 weeks while it drained the bottle
I am still getting oil dripping out the back doors - even after mopping up everything I could find

every 3 months pressure clean the towbar when I want to use it - usually covered in oil and dust by then

At least it wasn't a 600mm Big M chocolate milkshake. Mate spilt that in his old Kingswood and it smelt like vomit for months.

Or crab juice!

In a previous life an employee had a can of crab juice leak in the back seat of my car, that is beyond the worse thing imaginable to be soaked in your carpet!

Had a guy at my work spill a banana milk shake between the drivers seat and center console in one of the work cars, the smell would have you gagging and was still in the car when we traded it a year later.

Mate asked me to carry a few bottles of home brew spirits for him on a trip away camping for a week. Got to the camp to find the rear seat rather damp. Couple of bottles had bumped together on the rough road & a 1 litre bottle of Vodka had broke. No damage done to the seat, didn`t even stain but my eardrums copped a bashing from my mates missus whining about not having any alcohol for the week. Our 5 bottles of Bourbon survived just fine!

I remember a guy who stuck a dead carp in a cavity under the rear seat of another blokes car and it was a write off .

I can beat that.

Wife kept on me about the smell of petrol in the car (XW Fairmont GS 302 with toploader but no power steering)

Finally listened to her and traced it to the well in the fuel tank that the spare tyre sat in prior to it floating in the well full of petrol.
Stuffed tyre but no fire.

Moral of the story. When she who must be obeyed says she smells something its best and cheaper to listen quickly.
Hates petrol smell but really really hates the smell of diesel and vehicles without power steering.

One of the many times my old man suggested I should have been left in a tissue involved chocolate milkshake and the rear speakers of a much loved Studebaker Lark.
My ears are still ringing nearly 60 years on !!!

While we're on other bad smells...
Working for a company that has a lot of shared vehicles. Vehicles shared with some individuals that simply do not give a f***.
For an example, jumping in a truck thats been sitting there in the sun for a few weeks, with a forgotten coffee cup, kebab wrapper, sushi container, chicken bones, or a whole chicken (Yes a whole cooked chook once from Coles thats been slow re-cooked by mebourne summer sun in a enclosed Hino single cab) etc etc... All stashed somewhere hard to find like under a seat or stuck somewhere under the vinyl or carpets. And you have to drive that truck for a day or a week. Yeah you learn to hate people rather quick!

Or my all time pet hate. Tobacco after smell inside a vehicle. My hatred for that is indescribable.

To honestly answer the OP’s question, was there @PeeBee :-) ? Quite simply we should all carry our pissweak leaking 100um plastic oil containers on top in quality RedBack Rooftop Bags as suggested many years ago to @Rossco so that tragedies below never happen ever again :-( http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2017/11/19.jpg All jokes aside, in our wagon 4L oil lives in the rear wheel Redback Rubbish bag, stops the empty aluminium cans from rusting too ;-)

Mark, thats really not a bad idea when I think about it, but I tend to end up with a slab of empty bottles in the bag and its usually a delicate task transferring them to the recycling bin upon my return home, so adding a mix of broken glass and plastic containers is asking for trouble for me anyway. If you are bringing home aluminium cans or steel containers, might be a good safe alternative. @Cuppa external container holder is perhaps the best option or try to find a space for a lightweight galv box on the roof or a couple of custom boxes under the vehicle.

Weight in and on our Cliffhangers is true, always a worry.

Yeah, but grabbing the wrong bottle in the dark could give you a nasty jolt, although no doubt depends on how late in the night it is!

Lol. It's funny. I can spend, and do spend all day around people smoking no issues. Doesn't affect me one iota.
But the smell in the cars after... Revolting.
