300,000 km service, what to do?

Hey all,

Well the old grenade (ZD30 3L direct injection) has lasted me 300,000 km! That's a big confirmation towards NADS and regular servicing! I run her at 13-14 PSI at 100km/h, drop the oil every 5000 km and replace what ever crops up, including the power steering fluid as those big wheels tend to make it smelly very fast.

Time to give her a good service now she has hit the big 300, any suggestions on what to do at this interval?

I'm thinking oil, air, fuel, auto trans filter, change and flush all liquids, wheel and swivel bearings/scrapers.

Thoughts on turbo? Just let it run? I've heard no one really balances the variable vanes...

flush out the brake lines and re-new with dot-4 or whatever is suitable.
does the timing chain need replacing in these motors?????

If you are doing servicing by the book, then 320,000 should theoretically be the big one .. all fluids, re-pack bearings and swivel hubs, etc

If you haven't been doing this, and you have been doing oil changes only ( so to speak ), then I would definitely do the front hubs and wheel bearings.


I would also look at replacing the glow plugs, if you haven't done it already, as I think the tips breaking off is one of the catalysts for engine failures.

Turbo .... hmmm ... I was once of the opinion that it would be good insurance to replace at 200,000, and then sell the old one off cheap to recover some of the costs

Every 40,000 klms are the big services for all Patrols......

I never bothered changing the Glowplugs on the old 4.2, as they only stop working, rather than dropping the tips off the end. That is modern technology for you, and I do think that the glowplugs should be included in a semi regular service routine, such as 150,000, then 300,000, etc on the newer trucks.

On your beasty, they are pretty cheap, so changing them isnt going to break the bank, but not changing them isnt going to break your motor

Good advice, I haven't done the swivel hubs and bearings for a long time, to will get onto that.

Glow plugs I replaced not long ago, radiator - I didn't even think about re-rodding it!

As far as the timing chain goes, do you really need to replace chains, or just measure the stretch?

Replace itn Measuring the stretch won't tell you if its going to break, and if it breaks can be big bucks. ( damage to valves head and pistons )

Thanks 4bye4, fair call. Is this the right time time to replace it? do i need special tools, or can it be done in house? ie use cable ties to lock the cam sprockets etc?

Thats good mileage you have on that motor.... here in Pakistan those engines don't last longer than 100k!

Update - sold my other car so the service can be started! So far I've just done the basic - fuel, air and oil filters, oil, drain the catch can. Power steering and brake flush are next, swivel hub and wheel bearing kit is on the way with both axles to be drained and renewed, then coolant flush.

Any thoughts about the transfer case or anything else I should do for now? I will be doing the timing chain, but that's last as my experience doing these on Holden Alloytechs means lots of new expensive tools, lol.

Auto trans just received a new torque converter, thus new fluids etc, so that's good while.

have you thought about a rotor upgrade to dimple drilled and slotted rotors and green/black pads.
check the viscous fan they can become brittle and cracked

I haven't heard about this upgrade no? Is it a simple rotor upgrade like drilled and slotted rotors, making the heat dissipate more quickly? Viscous fan, great idea, thanks threedogs.

thought I'd revive this one with an update - swivel hub rebuild completed, MASSIVE THANKS to MUDRUNNER, without his run down I'd still be scratching my head in places. Also a big thanks for the manual from this site, total gold.

All seals and bearings replaced, new tie rod end, new brakes (and pending rebuild next service on the front calipers) turbo rebuilt (bit of a story there!) big visual inspection and torques checked on bolts etc.

All that is left is the rear brakes and diff oil, then coolant flush. Timing chain - after looking at the manual, can go take a long walk off a short pier!

So, all that is left is to test her out and see if my handy work lasts another 300,000!
