63% reduction gears fitted

Its taken me a long time to get these gears in but I am glad to say that they are finally in and I have to say, this is without going off road with them yet is that are very very good. The difference between the standard and the 63% is amazing. I am going to try to get some off roading in the next couple of weeks and will say more about them then. Just a few figures until then.

45L petrol Auto --------------------- original gearing ---------------------------------------------------------new 63% reduction

1st gear low range------------------2800 rpm--20 km/h-----------------------------------------------------2800 rpm-- 11 km/h
2nd gear-----------------------------2800 rpm--35 km/h-----------------------------------------------------2800 rpm---20 km/h
3rd gear-----------------------------2000 rpm--35 km/h-----------------------------------------------------2000 rpm---20 km/h

cost , went to a specialist $400 to dismantle
$700 to fit new gears
$400 new bearing kit
pricey but I know it has been done properly.
and of course $1300 for the gears that Andy organised.

Sorry silly question but what do those speeds mean? Are those speeds before/after reduction? e.g. for 1st gear low range 20km/hr then 11km/hr - how do I interpret that?

first set or figures are original gears and second set are with new gears, don't know what else to say mate.

On super steep hills, my low 1st isn't always the best - sometimes end up riding the clutch when going up, or touching the brakes when going down which causes sliding if it's muddy

My mates in newer 4wds go.much slower than me in 1 low

What made you decide to get reduction gears, same kinda thing?

Been out in mine with the 63% fitted twice now and love them!! So much more control. Still trying to get used to what gear I need to be in for different obstacle's but very good for an all round 4wd.

Yeah mate, having an auto made my 1st low range quite poor with me wanting another gear to drop down to on very steep climbs. I would be struggling in 1st low with my mates cruising up in 2nd low. So big test this weekend. getting excited now.

Thats really odd to me, i have found that 2nd low was best for me, to much wheel spin in 1st, and have done a lot of wheeling like that. I do agree with 1st low going down hill being a hassle.

My car is a 4.5 auto on gas as well

You really should keep your foot well away from the clutch when ascending a steep hill. My low 1st will climb almost anything but have been considering reduction gears for a while, mainly for super slow and controlled decents. Think I'm going to change the diff centres first though.

The 65%ers sound like like they're the business.

Went out with my 63% reduction gears today and found them to be fantastic. Going up hill I now have more than enough for almost anything that I will encounter, and down hill is such a massive improvement. some of the steepest stuff I did today I didn't need to touch the break at all, going down in full control with the reves around 1500- 2000, very happy with my investment. I would still love to see a set 85s in action to see how much of a step up they would be. I would think they would be far too low for the kind of stuff I do, heading into competition territory I reckon. The 43s wouldn't be worth looking at I feel.

Yeah, I have only been out once so more runs are needed but I would say 2nd low now is what 1st use to be may be even a little lower, I will know more when I get back to the high country and tackle some of those tracks that I have had experience on. as to getting use to them well the more you do the better you will know but having the revs in the right range for whatever speed and the gear you are in is a feel you have for your own car. I mean you can tell if your car is labouring or in that sweet spot without knowing what gear you are in, adjusting as you go.

Back for another update on my gears. Just got back from the High Country and I got to say that the 63% reduction gears that I have fitted are easily the best mod that I have done and possibly ever could do being an auto. Going down steep grades without touching the break, beautiful. Going uphill in drive and the trans chooses 3rd gear, amazing. Low enough for safe hill descent and high enough not to be constantly changing from high to low. Very Very happy.

What are your thoughts on these 63% fitted to a 3ltr TD auto.
Next on my list is a Pro-Locker for the front.

They sound like a great investment. The Patrols only come with 2:1 reduction as standard which is not very low. A lot of other makes come with around 2.5:1 reduction gears which helps them a lot. My 3.0 ltr TD is a manual and I find that I sometimes have to scrub some speed off using the brake on steep descents or that the motor lugs in 1st low up steep inclines when traveling slow for control.

From memory they do 45%, 63% and 85% reduction gears? Looks like picking the middle option gives you around 2.6:1 reduction which is the most versatile.

EDIT: Just looked up Marks adapters and reduction ratios are as follows:
24% ---------- 2.484:1
43% ---------- 2.86:1
85% ---------- 3.743:1

Where did you get the 63% reduction ratios Chubba? Are the a Marks adapter item or is someone else making them?

Well threedogs I don't know if you followed the group buy thread that was on here but I bought two sets, one for me and one for my brother. He had a 4.5L petrol auto at the time but as things worked out he was rear ended in the petrol before he had a chance to install the gears. it was a wright off and he ended up getting a 3l TD auto. He was on the trip with me and he is just as pleased as me. My thoughts are "DO IT"

Thanks for the info Chubba. I think that even 2.86:1 reduction ratio (43%) would work well with the Patrol if its a manual. I think you are running 3.26:1 reduction if I calculated correctly. An auto would do better with lower reduction.

Coming from a auto yota to an auto GU the patrol is about double the speed going downhill, which could be dangerous in slippery conditions.
The 63% sounds like the perfect choice. When I get around to doing this ($$$) I'll have to got the 43% if I cant get the 63%.

Has anybody got these gears in a tb45, I'm going to be running 35s out in the bush with 3.9 diff gears in an auto. Just after some feedback with those who have the same set up.

I run 285/75r16. 33" and very happy. I would guess 35" would still give you what you want

I am not sure of who had what setup but I think the 63's will be pretty good for that setup mate.
the TB45 is not a bad motor down low, the 63% will control the run away, and still give you some legs.

It would be a toss up between 63 and 85% for you setup I think.
If you had 4.1 I think definitely 63, with the 3.9 I think you could get away with either with the auto and be very very happy.

What sort of driving are you trying to do? the 63 will give you a little more versatility, the 85 will be a nuisance on things like sand and even mud to some extent...

Coming from an auto oyta, the Patrol is scrap going down any descent especially in slippery conditions and dangerous..

Yes, I wanting to stop the runaway. I'm reasonably happy with it overall, just the runaway can be a little scary at times.

If youre just trying to reign in the runaway I would say the 63% will be great, and if you're still not happy at a converter lock
