2009 patrol help, (long post) loss of power, now won't start. Stuck in Alice!!

Hi all. Soo I was en route to Uluru in my 2009 CRD via kings canyon towing a pop top camper. In the morning the patrol took a bit to start (trying to recall if it did the day before but can't). Got to kings and the indicator flashed on and off and when I took the key out the buzzer still sounded as if lights were on. Found the trailer adapter had a melted earth wire (later found earth wire all the way to the rear lights had melted all through camper). Disconnected plug, fuelled up 30km down road and trol wouldn't start without priming (priming bulb never went firm). 100km down road engine light came on power lost and cut out. Reprimed, restarted and drove about 5km. Lost power and engine would not start. Tried emptying filter (new 5000km earlier) no good. Had to get towed to ayres rock autos. Codes on their reader were 1089 (fuel pump) and 0093 fuel leak (prob from me roadside flushing filter). $1500 later they advised couldn't fix, could only start with brake cleaner sprayed in air filter. $2200 tow to Alice springs Nissan and they are saying they don't know the prob but nissan procedure is start with replacing fuel rail ($2000 + labour) if that doesn't fix then fuel pump ($4000 + labour) and one other part after that (don't know what that is yet).

I have been reading everything about fried ecu, loose earths on Maf sensor where do I start?? Stuck in caravan park in Alice and don't have $10k to get nissan to guess with!!!

contact your insurance company I assume you have comp insurance. and also what came out of the filter.

Nothing came out of the filter other than fuel, insurance reckon they won't cover anything , am working that angle.

might have damaged the ecu with the burnt earth wires creating a spike

I'm with the above but for what its worth disconnect
all your batteries for an hour and see if the ECU will re set.

Plus who wired up the trailer plug, that's where the fault lies IMO

Trailer plug and wiring and car wiring are all standard apart from Electric brake wire. It looks like a pin in the adapter plug came loose and shorted. Hasn't melted forward towards the car

Sounds like you may have one or two leaky injectors, as the system won't allow it to start if it can't get the required rail pressure, but will then run ok if you can get it started

Still waiting to sort mine. I managed to drive it to the nissan dealer from caravan park after starting it with a can of spray. That was about 8km stayed at low speed, ran ok so that discounts NATS I think. Have sourced cheaper parts but want the ECU looked at. Nissan doing that today hopefully.

How did it work out?

Any updates? . Really interested in this one, I've had the exact 2 codes come up on my 07 crd. 3 times the power cut out and pedal went limp, then while coasting to the side of the road engine would completely cut out, it would restart straight after that but been about 15,000k since it did it last.

Ok so I have had the fuel rail replaced today (bought one through diesel centre australia and had Peter useless as all hell Kittle Nissan in Alice Springs fit it (parts arrived Thursday last week and they fitted it today (Tuesday). Have been advised the car starts but has no power when they accelerate so need to run more tests which they can't do until Monday next week!! They have no fricken idea, no real mechanics there just lego builders that read diagnostic machine and replace parts. Totally stuck not knowing what to do from here, about to lose a job opportunity if I can't get back to WA!!!

bugger mate thats not good, you may have to look at getting it trucked back to perth and fly back so you dont miss out on the job.

Keep us up to date Grant_110, this one is interesting but hope the job situation isn't stuffed up.

ask around for a real mechanic, there has to be one there. we had a similar problem with Nissan down here, bloody useless mob. . it was the guys in the forum here that solved my problem, but when i informed nissan , " to check the pan hard bushes" they dismissed me as a no nothing female... and guess what was wrong... yep the pan hard bushes were shot through, the local RAA guy in millicent s.a. found the problem straight away, the horrible death shakes, who then told me to go and see the guys at beaurepaire tyres, the only mob that knew what they were doing, and have had no problems since, except a pesky oil light keeps coming on.

I have tried around for other mechanics. Has one lined up this morning. Was told by nissan car was starting and driving but still lacking power. Went to collect it and it wouldn't start. After a lot of arguing all of a sudden they could fit it in today. They "diagnosed" it's definately the fuel pump (don't trust that's the case) but have ordered one and will see what that does. Unfortunately everyone is booked out here for weeks (today's slot with the other mechanic was a lucky cancellation) so they kinda have me over a barrel!!

Hey Grant, this may be an odd ball one to chuck in there but have you had the accelerator pedal replaced as per the recall advice that came out last year?

Depending when you bought the vehicle if you have not had the recall done yourself, there will be a sticker on the body when you open the drivers side door.

Checked the vin but mine isn't in the series, that would have been nice lol

At this stage it might be cheaper to ship the whole lot back to Perth and have Nissa look at it?

So it was the dealer that fitted the fuel rail, and now they're telling you its the fuel pump? It sounds as if they are using the the "Golden Wheelbarrow" method (Just keep replacing items until the problem is fixed), at your expense.

This is unfortunately what Nissan would have done too. CRD fuel system diagnose method is, replace stuff till it works ...

Well seeing he has Nissan, and I bet Toyota I would not be surprised if he has not tied up most dealerships there. So fundamentally, yes he may own a big bit of space there.


This is sounding like a burnt out sensor or stuffed ECU caused by the short circuit.

Kittle has most of the dealerships I think. They are half way through replacing fuel pump. Should have outcome by Monday arvo.

So if the dealer fits the fuel rail, new fuel pump and still it does not work are they going to foot the bill for unnecessary part replacements because it means the old parts were working.

Sounds like a run around.

Seriously they should check the ECU first. The rest are peripheral.

I will be fighting like hell for that to happen, threatening consumer affairs etc.

And, did they give you the "old" parts back?

It's a shame that your stuck mate,but whats worse is the fact that they probably don't have your parts they took off..wouldn't it be good if you could tell them if that wasn't the problem or faulty part put it back on then...for what is worth has anyone checked the fuel filter in the tank on the end of the fuel pickup?

I do have the old parts, insisted, the fuel rail is in the front seat and I walked into the workshop today and told the mechanic to keep the pump. There is flow from the tank so I think that's ok, thanks for all suggestions though, think the receptionist at kittles is sick of hearing "the guys on the forum suggest" lol

Perhaps the mechanics or the Forman at Kittles should log in here and ask some questions. They might actually get the right advice vs their guess and hopeful god costly estimates.

Just got it back - fuel pump it was!!!

Glad to hear its solved. Hopefully you will get some compensation for the "non-fixes". hope it all goes well for you from here on.

Also how many Km has it done?

Car has done 88000 km. the pump and fuel rail I bought from diesel centre australia (Pat and Jamie thanks) rail cost $1300 including air freight, labour was $1100 to fit (including pipes) (kittles quoted $1900 for rail) and pump cost $2100 , kittles quoted $3600, cost $1300 to fit. So that was final solution after spending $1500 at ayres Rick to be told they don't know the prob and a couple of grand towing fee. Rail should be ok if anyone needs a cheap one. Kept the pump too to see if worth reconning.

Did they suggest any reason what would have caused the fuel pump to have a problem? Low km to have something like that happen.

They have no idea, have read a few reviews on different forums for pump going at 80k??

good news ,still beats me why they want to charge like a wounded bull thinking they are "Outback"
