R u ok day

Hi Guys,

You may or may not know but today is National "R U OK" day today. It is an awareness campaign that is meant to strike up conversation and help people get things off their chest. At the end of the day in their words its all about "Putting Mateship Back on Track", I know that everyone goes through ups and downs and I for one am no stranger to them.

Ive definately had my ups and downs more recently with my car motor blowing up on my freshly purchased patrol, and also getting engaged(dont know if thats a high or a low, just kidding of course its a high). Infact most people do not know this about me but ive been struggling with depression most of my adult life. I attempted suicide several times as a mid-teen and had extremely low self esteem in my late teens and early twenties. But the one thing that has helped me through all these moments in my life has been undoubtedly haveing a great network of friends, actually a great network of MATES, because i reckon you have a much stronger bond with mates than friends.

So anyway, enough about me, dont be shy... R U OK???

I can tell you mate id be Farked without this place and the guys that come here. they keep me centred and landed and give me some hope that there are still good people out there even when the people close to your day disappoint you and let you down. I alway have this place. except that guy from the Gong!!

This Forum has helped boost my morale in many of my times of need. Thanks everybody.

Well for a start thanks to nic for bringing this up
as one of many mature age members here i have found
mateship on this forum and many friends over the past
four years or so
and the best part of this is that all the young fellas
are willing to help and say very often r u ok mate

No I am f£$king not........ Wife seems down all the time.... car issues...... one of my best mates cancer has come back....... worried about money......... why does this pimple on my back in a spot I cant reach it..... my back hurts..... my kids have flat feet...... blah blah blah...

Either way I will be pissed this weekend and Sunday I will feel very average but I will get to see my mates.... then I can whinge in person.. bwa ha ha ha ha!!!!

R U OK day used to be a big thing at my work as the boss's son commited suicide due to depression and gambling a few years ago.
Now I don't work with him any more but I have heard he is in very bad health so I will make sure to call him today and ask "R U OK"

it does feel good getting stuff off your chest on here. i guess in someway the internet provides a certain anonymity, but it also is a vast support network, even from blokes you/I will probably never meet like wine_maker or fracster. and even though you will never meet them (most likely) they still drop you a line and chime in when you post up problems in your life, offering some moral support. i think the internet also provides an easy way to get stuff out in the open, i mean you dont have to do anything but push a few keystrokes

A National R U OK day, I for one am pretty appalled that someone out there has decided that it's necessary to have a R U OK day, It's a shame that the human race doesn't seem capable of doing this on a daily basis.... Yes there are many out there who are willing to stop and ask the question and help but there's a damn site more who prefer to live in their own bubbles, there choice I guess.

Anyway, I woke up grumpy and sore but I've cheered up a bit now thanks to Jono's whinging :-D

Good post up mate. Think and hang with positive people will bring good things in your life. When people start to talk negative I try and steer them in a positive direction. Hey, the guy next to you always has it tougher than you....

OK, I little about me.
My set back was when I was 15 many many moons ago.
I had a bone tumor behind my knee, end result was am above knee amputation. That screwed with me for a while, but learn to live with it.
Fast track to 10 years ago and we decided to build a home that would see us till the kids are all grown up and have there own places. Well, with two loans, one for the current house that we where living and wanting to keep as an investment (remember house prices per gst in Melbourne that's when we brought this) and the other being progressively being drawn down as the new house was Coming together. The builder put his company into voluntary liquidation.
The current house had to be sold and we moved in with my sister in law and her family, until she had her second child, had to move again as not enough room. At this time my in laws were going overseas so we moved into there place. This meant a 20 min drive to drop off my son at kinder three days a week.
The new house was eventually finished 3 years after it was started, but not without its headaches and additional $$$. All this while doing 12 hour nights and my youngest being a baby. My wife working as well, remember two loans and no house to live in.
Sorry for the length, but this still hurts, the leg I didn't have a say on it, but the house what out of my control. One that I can't let go is the a hole who laid a timber floor which was the last thing to be done before we moved in. He screwed it up and it had to be replaced. 40k lost on top of everything else that the builder screwed.

So am I OK.

and its always good to know that you aint the only one mate. im sure everyone can find some similarities to a problem in their life, i for one with my heart Op and no more contact sport, right in my prime of fitness. it really does feel good to know that your not the only one out there who is having problems. thanks for sharing your story

I guess I'm one of those people who live in bubble. Like most, I have my own issues, some are quite severe right now, some are just annoyances with life I guess. As NP99 said. "Theres always someone worse than you". Not saying it wrong at all to have one of these National days, its a great idea, its just not for me.
But we all just battle on hoping the next day will be better than today.

My wife kept on reminding me that it could be worst during the house thing, and she was right....

I'm stuck at home for the 2nd day with a farked arm, that count lol

I'm great thanks guys and thanks for asking Nic. My problems/issues are insignificant to what you guys have experienced. I suppose it's always easy to say there are others in a worse situation than yourself but you feel your own pain first. I guess that's just human nature.

I'm depressed!

I hate my job, doesn't pay enough and I don't have any skills 2 do anything else.

My patrol has been sitting in the driveway for just over a year now with nothing getting done 2 it due to lack of funds.

Many things I would love to do 2 the house but can't do due 2 lack of funds.

I'm overweight and unhealthy............yeh something I could change if I changed my bad eating habits

Constantly sore........either headaches, bad back or sore something else

My partner does not give me sex everyday :(:(:(

The list is endless...............

But at the end of the day my issues are not really issues compared 2 others in the world ( mates, friends and people I don't know ) and I'm thankful I have a beautiful partner ( even though she doesn't give me sex every day! ) beautiful kids ( although they stress me a lot! ) and my mates that all keep me thinking my life is worth living :)

It's that damn wedding cake mate, it happened to me too :)

I am feeling the best I have in years.

No longer on anti depressants/anxiety meds
Have a job that gives me good coin and heaps o time off and still home everyday.
Great friends that are a phone call away and a member of a forum of like minded people that are nice to each other and is there when I am not ok.

I have a great little family.

So a big thanks to every one that makes this place what it is.

mate, its never too late to upskill! im currently looking for an apprenticeship, my old man just graduated from a paralegal degree, after being a photographer for 20+years at the age of 52. it is NEVER too late to change career mate!i cant help with the sex bit sorry haha

your not overweight, just well rounded both in personality and body hahaha. besides, you are in shape, round is a shape! if you wanna do somthing to the house let me know... well do it together!

Do you remember exactly where you where and what you were doing when you heard the news on the towers falling? I still remember I was driving to work down Cooper st and had just past Edgars Rd intersection when the news came over the radio.

yep i remember, i had got up early for school, or maybe it was saturday school sport, switched on the TV and was really annoyed when there was nothing on but news... then realised why. such a sad day, conspiracy theories or not

I was a child and was upset because Cheez TV was not on.

Yep. Like it was yesterday.

Finished watching a movie and flicked over to the TV, trying to work out what was hanging out of the building and saw the other plane fly into the second building. Woke up my wife who fell asleep during the movie and she saw the replay and asked what movie are you watching now.
I do remember saying to her, why do we bring kids onto this world when shit like this happens. My eldest son was a couple of months old.

Finally back working after nearly 5 months off. Great to have an income, and a healthy, happy family. My problems are tiny, on the Global scale but thanks for asking Nic.
