Noise at front of motor

I've had a whining sound which increases as the revs of the moror goes up. I have changed all the belts as most where pretty worn, but to my suppise when I started the car up, the noise was still there, I pout a new alternator in back in Feb this year. I've notices, if I spray crc or the like where the belts make contact with the pullies it seems to quiten it down, when the old belts where on it would be quite for that drive, then after sitting for the night it would be the same next morning, The tensioner pully for the AC seemed fine. Any suggestion and cures appreicated.

What motor... sounds like a bearing on either your alternator or tensioner.

Do you play in the mud... what brand alternator did you buy??

My thoughts are tensioner pulley bearing also.

Its a 89 GQ TB42S, the alternator is a 70 amp hitachi bought from baxters
yes I do play in the mud, but nothing extreme
I've been googling and sites are saying bearing in the waterpump! How do I tell?

I'd use belt dressing rather than crc mate.

Ok tried the trick with the screw driver,putting it against the metal like a stethoscope can only hear a faint ticking sound from the water pump, and not sure what I hear from the alternator, but this morning, after performing the above, sprayed some wd40 behind the pully for the alternator, then started it up and the noise was almost gone, so would it be safe to assume its the alternator? I've called the place I bought it from in Feb, they said they have to send it off to head office, so I got the option of putting my old alternator on which barely works, or they said to buy another and after testing and confirming that the alternator has a bearing problem they said they will refund me for having bought a second one..

It does not take much in the mud to get an alternator to play up sometimes... I kill a 70 amp alternator in no time with all the electrics I run.

Mine is making that annoying noise at present but cant be arsed taking it out so I just turn the radio up.. that was from a short play in the the mud with George last month.

Is it possible to flush the alternator out? as if I take it back under warranty if its full of mud they wont replace it, I've called the place I bought it from in Feb, they said they have to send it off to head office, so I got the option of putting my old alternator on which barely works, or they said to buy another and after testing and confirming that the alternator has a bearing problem they said they will refund me for having bought a second one.. When you say "kill a 70 amp alternator in no time with all the electrics I run" how much life do you get out of a 70amp one? I would have thought even with all the electrics I run, I would get more than 3 month out of it...

Loosen your fan belt and spin the alternator, and water pump by hand, and you might be able to hear if it is the bearing. I got muddy water in the alternator last year, so I replaced the bearing, but repacked the new one with Innox Mx 8 marine grade, high speed, high temp and high pressure grease. Haven't had any problems so far.



:oops:EDIT: Mx 8 not LM 8 grease.

No point washing the alternator out as the internals will be covered in mud.
Present it as clean as possible though,
Might want to upgrade to a bigger one while its out.
Do as Mudnut says remove the belt and give it a spin

I run a 100 amp alternator that keeps all my electrics sorted to replace it cost me $300 odd and that's a tb42s as well

I posted the wrong initials for the grease. It is Mx8 not LM8.

I use 120 amp alt and also have a spare.... there is a holden one that is an easy mod but I cant remember what out of now??
