Has anyone got a few tips on how to go about removing the roof lining on a GU wagon?
Kallen and Parksy have inspired me with their sound deadening threads but I'm thinking that if I am going to do it, I might as well do the inside of the roof as well. Might help with the heat insulation if nothing else anyway.
I haven't started yet, just in the process of ordering the sound deadener and sound dampener/insulator materials and planning it out so any tips would be great.

It's pretty simple to remove.
All the door and window trims need to be removed and the roof lining is just tucked in there. The roof lining is also supported by steal rods the help with tension. They are slotted into the top rail and one you have the edges off you will see how to remove these rods.

Thought I'd throw up a few pics of the process. Very easy at the end of the day and probably took me about an hour and a half.
I decided to start at the back and work forward. The roof lining in the GU is in two pieces with the cargo area overlapping the front piece.
Start by removing the rubber cargo door seal all the way around and then remove the side trims from around the rear windows on both sides. You'll need a phillips head screw driver, a 10mm socket and 1/4in drive, and if you have them, a set of the door trim removal tools.

Remove the interior cargo bay light. Pull off the clear cover, then undo the two phillips head screws. Note, I had previously disconnected my battery as a matter of course.

You will need to undo the middle seat belts for the middle seat at the bottom and then feed it back through the plastic trim panel.
The rear part of the lining then drops down easily and can be removed from the vehicle. The interior light feeds back up through the hole in the panel and I then simply screwed it back up to stop it flapping around.

I then used a bit of acetone to give the ceiling a good clean up. The old felt padding doesn't cover the whole ceiling and if it isn't falling down, it comes off very easily as it is only held on by a bit of double sided tape.
Of note, there were no steel rods to be found anywhere in my vehicle.
The forward ceiling is a little more time consuming, but not much.
The pillar covers and grab handles all need to come off, along with the sun visors and any over head lighting or consoles.

I didn't remove the B-pillar covers, as they held the lining in place nicely until I was ready to lower it down.
I also took the opportunity to tidy up the wiring to my UHF coming up the front passengers side A-Pillar.
All the felt came off easily and I will replace it all with a few sheets of dynamat or butyl sound deadener, and then some foam overlay to help with the heat coming through the roof.
How's progress Benk? If it's still apart id take the opportunity to use some rust proofing product on the insides of the sills. Good old preventative that's only going to make you feel warm and fuzzy knowing it's all good.
Yeah, good idea. Hopefully the sound deadener and replacement foam lining arrive today. I did just put a bit of expandable foam into the structural cavities at the front and rear to firm things up and insulate them somewhat. Will trim it up today once it is all set hard. Wicked stuff!

Yea Mr was describing the gq. We have steel rods holding the fabric up, and ylthe gq is tucked into the window / door rubbers..
I see why the gu is quiter, those panels will absorb more than thin fabric..
Nice work! It's giving me ideas for replacing the gq vinyl style roof liner for something fixed. Anyone ever heard anything like this before?

Todd, it seems like the new thread is closed? If you want it to read as a DIY, then I still need to add the sound deadener etc. etc, and finish the job. Is that what you intended?

So today I finally managed to find some time to continue this little project. I picked up two meters of foam insulation from Jenkins Rubber (2.0 x 1.2m) for the ceiling spaces, and found by the end of it I had about 30cm left. 1.2m just happens to be the exact width of the ceiling spaces so it was a handy buy. The foam itself is fairly light, and came with an adhesive backing at $33/m. I also happen to have picked up a couple of meters of the Car Builders waterproof foam lining and if I was to compare it, the Car Builders product is denser and heavier for the same thickness. I'll use it on the floor.

So, I am still waiting for the dynamat to arrive, and these pieces are all just cut to size and sitting there. The ceiling area now has a much better coverage than the previous Nissan matting that was fitted but I really feel that each panel area needs a strip of dynamat to get best results. I want to fit a relatively thin strip across the ceiling in each panel area first, and then stick down the foam lining over the top. I asked the Jenkins Rubber people if the adhesive stands up to the high temps that I am sure the area will reach and was assured that it would. We'll see...
Hopefully I can get this job finished in the next couple of days. Driving around without a ceiling and without any sound proofing is quite a loud experience.
Out of interest, today I pulled my roof rack off and the ceiling was notably quieter. I then put it back on, and took it for a highway run, and could hardly hold a conversation with the radio going. My roof rack has mesh fitted to the flooring area and I reckon there is quite a decent hum coming from it when driving at speed.
Ok, to wrap this up.
The dynamat arrived yesterday and I got the ceiling finished. Basically, I covered in the panels above the driver and front passenger and then put strips of dynamat across the vehicles remaining ceiling panels. Once the dynamat was in place, I removed the adhesive liner on the foam and stuck it all down.
Bit of elbow grease required, and you have to watch the sharp edges on the dynamat once you have cut it to size. I ended up with a heap of small cuts in my fingers but otherwise all good.

Front Panel mostly covered. The dynamat cuts pretty easily with a stanley knife. They recommend a hard roller to get it bedded down propery, however I didn't have one so I just used the handle of one of my larger screwdrivers. Seemed to work ok.

I also completely filled in the second roof panel area above the driver and front passenger seats. That gap was filled after taking the photo.

I then used a 10cm wide strip like this one for the remaining ceiling panels before sticking down the foam over the top.

I'll post up an evaluation on the results once I've re-installed the ceiling liner and panels and taken it for a decent drive. Seems quieter just starting the engine and reversing out of the garage though.

Results - well, it is hard to quantify but I am very happy with the noise reduction. Just doing the ceiling and front and rear structural cavities has lowered the sound levels considerably.
In addition, I spent a fair amount of time today putting down dynamat and foam vehicle liner on the front drivers and passengers footwell, firewall and under the front seats. I didn't remove the dash, just pushed it up as far as I could.
The results of a test drive after this addition were even better again and if I did nothing further to the vehicle I would be happy with the noise reductions and vibration reductions that I have achieved so far.
Tomorrow I plan to do the outside door skins of the two front doors with the remaining dynamat, and if I have enough I will seal off the doors as per the advice from 04OFF to improve the sound from the mediocre Phillips speakers that I have and see how it goes.
On Monday I am off for another crack at exploring the Maytown track so will give it all a really good test run then.
Any updates? Keen to see how you went with the doors as well.

I've done about half of the rear passengers doors now too, but then ran out of dynamat and have only just gotten around to ordering some more. Been flat out with other stuff and still have the car in bits. More fun for when I next get home from work I guess. I'll finish the rear passengers doors, floor, rear quarter panels and barn doors next. Won't be pulling the drawers out to cover the cargo bay floor though. Can't be stuffed at this point.
Any problems with trim clips breaking when you removed the interior panels? Did you have to replace most of them or did they come off ok? I'm getting ready to do this with my 99 GU for thermal insulation for our harsh winters here. Getting my supplies in order and hope to start soon before the cold weather sets in.
Yeah a couple broke but most were fine. Made easier with one of those plastic trim removal tools from eBay too.
